Subject: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: GUEST,Katy Date: 23 Mar 00 - 05:02 PM Hallo everyone from a new Mudkitty!
After reading about a week's worth of threads and alternately topping up my songbook with lots of lovely new songs, laughing hysterically or glaring furiously at the screen I was wondering if any any of you marvellous, mad, knowledgeable people will be at the Sidmouth festival in the UK this year, 4-11 August?
It looks a great line-up IMHO -- Kate Rusby, The Poozies, Shooglenifty and, moving from the sublime to the ridiculous, The Sensitive New Age Cowpersons will be there, amongst others. Will any Mudcatters be there?

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: GUEST Date: 23 Mar 00 - 06:53 PM I'll hopefully be there intermittently, as I'm planning to see Kate Rusby, Billy Bragg, and the Poozies if possible, so I'll wear my Mudcat t-shirt in the hope of spotting some other like-minded idiots. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: BanjoRay Date: 23 Mar 00 - 08:43 PM I will almost definitely be there. If last year is anything to go by, I'll spend most of the week playing banjo in the Old-Time session on the promenade, or in the right hand bar of the Bedford. What a week - it really brought the best out of everybody. On the last night, the session had grown to about 40 musicians - it was like the Halle orchestra playing Old-Time music. Cheers Ray |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Mar 00 - 08:45 PM Not to mention Rolf Harris.
I'll be there, God willing. Well I haven't missed since I think 1984.
But GUEST with the Mudcat T-short - please stick some kind of identifying mark next to GUEST. I mean you might be the same as GUEST, or GUEST, but I doubt very much if you are the same as GUEST - and I devoutly hope you aren't GUEST... |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: GUEST,Saraj Date: 23 Mar 00 - 08:51 PM Wish I could be there but can't afford the plane fare. If you are there please be on the lookout for a group of Morris dancers called "Sarum Morris" they are from my home town of Salisbury in Wiltshire and both my parents are part of the group. My mother dances and my dad (having 2 left feet) is the groups barker. If you see them please say HI from me in Canada. |

It would be great to put faces to names ........I think! So who else is coming? ............. Tim |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: Eric the Viking Date: 24 Mar 00 - 04:52 PM I can't get there-cycling through holland, but there's Cleckheaton folk festival last weekend in June/1st July and Whitby where many mudcats are a gathering I believe. Sidmouth is just excellent though. Used to go back in the 70's. Cheers. Eric |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 Mar 00 - 07:11 PM Round the Arts Centre tends to be a good place to hang out - it's got song sessions in the bar from about 12 till 2pm, and the beer's good and the foopds basic but cheap; and downstairs there's the Assembly room, with a whole range of people programmed in - storytellers, singers, muysicians. And the Theatre is just down the corridor with a whoile set of other stuff.
I'm getting Sidmouth homesick again...
A suggestion I made on another thread for festivals generally -m there's always some kind of noticeboard or notice tree or whatevr in Festivals, to help people meet up with people they've lost and stuff like that. So I suggest Mudcattewrs who are feeling Mudcat sociable use this - at Sidmouth it's in the box-office tent. And use the daily Sidmouth Newsletter. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: GUEST,Katy Date: 26 Mar 00 - 12:06 PM Susan of DT -- thanks for fixing the bold/line breaks thing. More html practice needed on my part, I think... I'll look out for the noticeboards and Mudcat T-shirts (gotta get one!)at Sidmouth then. Would it be too much thread-creept to ask if anyone is thinking of then crawling on to Cropredy after Sidmouth? I hear the Incredible String Band are playing there on the Thursday night... |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: Linda Kelly Date: 26 Mar 00 - 02:48 PM Katy- nice to hear from you-sorry Sidmouth is just too far from Yorkshire (I can hear all the north americans sniggering- two hundred miles is far if your British!) However, Cropedy is a great gathering but try to make Warwick which is a WONDERFUL festival and a beautiful town (my old home!). Also Whitby folk week-we must get a Mudcatters session arranged beforehand -in say the Middle Earth ....... |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: Llanfair Date: 26 Mar 00 - 04:51 PM I think I'm going to Cropredy with my son, who has just aquired a volkswagen camper-40mph downhill with a following wind!!!!! Gosh, I'm going to be busy in August!!!! Bron. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: Gervase Date: 10 May 00 - 04:46 AM It's raucous, but don't miss the Middle Bar at the Anchor - home of some of the best unaccompanied singing you'll hear this side of the barn at Towersey. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: GUEST,ella Date: 10 May 00 - 10:15 AM wasn't going to go as I will be just getting back from Enniscorthy Ireland and recovering from the week there at the Fleadh Cheoil Na Eireann - but might just go and try out Sidmouth as it is only about 2 hours down the motorway. Is there a decent camp site there? ella |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: Gervase Date: 10 May 00 - 11:33 AM Not so much a camp site, more of a tented city - pretty huge, with plenty of water points and caterers, situated on a sloping field about hal a mile to the north of the town. There's a shuttle bus service from the site to most of the main festival venues that operates until nearly midnight, while some of the other venues, like the late-night extra marquee, are within staggering distance of the site. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: GUEST,boxman@ntlworld.com Date: 10 May 00 - 02:51 PM If I can get accommodation this year I'll be there, I've left it too late, I should have booked last year! Good sessions at the Bedford (I helped to start these in '92) Also I need a lift on the 4th. if there are any English people out there with a space in the car Nick Jones |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: GUEST,jayohjo Date: 11 May 00 - 07:56 AM I'll be there if i can find somewhere to stay, & finances permit i can travel the length of the country... Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: cujimmy Date: 16 Jun 00 - 06:41 AM where are the best places to go for singing ( singarounds etc ) do you need to buy a weekly ticket to use the camp site - most of the time all I would want to do is sing songs, drink beer and make friends. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: Gervase Date: 16 Jun 00 - 09:55 AM Singarounds galore, but if it's a combination of beer and good singing, see the Anchor above. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: Melodeon Date: 31 Jul 00 - 04:37 PM Can anyone beat this for luck? We did not think we would be able to get to Sidmouth this year because of heavy work shedules, but last week decided we would go just for a couple days as it would be impossible to find accomodation for the whole week at such short notice. So on saturday I sent an email to a local accomodation agency asking if they had got anything within ten miles of Sidmouth.Yesterday we received one back saying they had a cottage IN SIDMOUTH itself available for next week! So hurray we're going to Sidmouth. Another egroup we belong to are meeting up in the Anchor gardens on Sunday afternoon so perhaps Mudcatters should name a time and venue to meet.Any suggestions? By the way does anyone know where the wonderful festival food tent will be this year as I understand the Ham is a building site. Viv

|
Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: The Shambles Date: 31 Jul 00 - 05:55 PM I suspect the food tent will be now in the arena. For which admission is £3 a day! A bit of a rip-off I feel. What do you think? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: Melodeon Date: 31 Jul 00 - 09:20 PM I suspect you're right Shambles, but then doesn't that sum up the whole Mrs Casey set up. I love Sidmouth but I constantly get the feeling I am being ripped off (not by the locals, who would have every reason to do so) but by the people who supposedly "saved" the festival. but then they probably rely on the fact that people like us will go there anyway so they can do what they like. I get most of my enjoyment not from the big featured artists but fron the smaller fringe events. in fact this year we havn't even splashed out the ?£120 for tickets because there isn't enough on the main programme that I would want to go to in order to my money's worth. Having said all that however it is still a wonderful week and I am really looking forward to it, even if it is just to meet up with old (and new ) friends that we only see once a year. This wasn't meant to be a negative political rant but it is two in the morning and I've got insomnia. Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: The Shambles Date: 01 Aug 00 - 03:58 AM It looks as if the box office will still be in the car park, as before. The place to leave messages would be there, I would suggest. There is another box office in the arena but I don't think I will be going in there at all.
It seems a little short-sighted. For the stalls and place to sell things are all in the arena and little else. For you have to pay extra for the shows. If I had paid to have a stall there, I would not be happy at the thought that my potential customers were already £3 lighter (in addition to the £4 parking charge), before they found my stall and that they would be most unlikely to come back in another day….. However it is free admission after 5PM????? The REAL festival for me is the one on the seafront and in the pubs. The division between this and the official festival appears to be getting wider, unfortunately. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 02 Aug 00 - 09:44 PM Yeah, well, it's a steep price for a season ticket, but what makes it really expensive is, if you're not into the camping, the rip-off prices charged for accommodation. But then, that's what the market bears - including me. Think of it as a foreign holiday to some place with all this weird mixture of cultures, and it's not so bad.
Have a good Sidmouth everybody... |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: GeorgeH Date: 03 Aug 00 - 08:16 AM OK, so there are aspects of Mrs Casey's operation which I disagree with strongly . . and the entry charge for the Arena Showground is one of them. BUT if you stop to condider the combination of enormous additional costs and loss of income they suffered the "year of the rains" then you should have some appreciation of their financial issues. As suggested, there's many things I can/do disagree with Steve Heap about, but all the indications I have are that he's essentially a decent guy with the same love of the music which unites us here. He works hard for his festivals, his life-style seems to fall well short of your average mediocre pop star (or pop promoter) - I really can't begrudge him making the living he does! I'll be there . . setting off 9.30am tomorrow. Just popped into Mudcat for the first time in 2 weeks or so . . Have a good week, one and all . . those of us at Sidmouth will have the better one! G. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: Gervase Date: 08 Aug 00 - 06:24 AM Just back from a flying visit to Sidmouth - now sitting sweltering in the office wishing I was there again and promising myself that next year I'll do the full week again (business permitting). I caught up with Kevin McGrath, who knocked the Arts Centre audience sideways with his song on the deaths in Dover; even grizzled and hardened folkies were fumbling with their handkerchiefs! All in all a rather better impression than the one I made when I walked into the Middle Bar on Friday afternoon when it was in full swing. I reached into my bag for the old pewter pot for the first beer of the festival to find that (because it seemed a good space-saving idea at the time) I'd wedged a roll of old-fashioned Izal shit-house paper inside. It was stuck faster than snot to an oven door, and took a good five minutes of vein-bulging, sweat-inducing tugging to get the bugger out. Five minutes in which a song was completely ruined because that bloody roll of bog paper became the focus of attention for the entire pub! The singer carried on manfully, unaware of what was going on behind him, but wondered why everyone was beginning to corpse and hoot. Two songs later and Lugubrious Bob was giviing his instantly composed version of the Middle Bar Bog Roll Blues - the swine! Dammit, I'm missing the place already!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: Liz the Squeak Date: 08 Aug 00 - 02:51 PM Oh Gervase, it could only happen to you!!!! Wetting myself here, and wishing I'd been there...... the paper would have been handy! Re: ticket costs - have you ever thought of stewarding these festivals? All it takes is a bit of common sense, the ability to look as if you know what you are doing, the tact to tell people 100 times an hour not to park there, or where the ticket office is, and the knowledge that there will never be a hi-viz jacket to fit you. I've done Towersey for about 4 years now, and it's great. Free ticket for everything, for about 16 hours work over the weekend. Imagine what chaos it would be if no-one did it.... LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: jayohjo Date: 14 Aug 00 - 05:10 PM Wonderful! Gervase, I didn't realise that was you! I spent most of my week in the Middle Bar, this being my first week at Sidmouth - you ought to know that incident has already passed into sidmouth/middle bar folklore! Any other Mudcatters at Sidmouth? General feelings on how your week went? Mine was great, I had a top time, and made friends with Steve Heap.... jayohjo XX |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: Liz the Squeak Date: 14 Aug 00 - 06:09 PM The bog roll incident has indeed gone down in history - it was related to me yesterday, by another person who also didn't realise it was Gervase! LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 14 Aug 00 - 06:54 PM Great week, with the best weather I can remember in years of going to Sidmouth - even if some of the changes were a bit shambolic. Talking of shambles, I also ran into The Shambles in the Arts Centre. He was on a flying visit, and we never got much of a chance to talk because I had to dive back in or I'd have missed my song-spot.
Then at the Sensitive New Age Cowpersons concert I got mistaken for a fella called Ken Hughes from up in Shropshire, who chaired some of the singarounds, except that he died a week before this Sidmouth. That's how ghost stories start.
And as I was waiting for the bus back to Honiton (where the trains stop), a bloke comes up and identifies me, and says he's had a few arguments with me on the Mudcat. Turned out he's one of the anonymous Guests. Or threadworms as I've decided to call them. But one of the less irritating ones.
Were there any more of us there? Too bad I missed Gervase's bogroll boozeup.
And now it's on to Whitby, which will be adorned this year by Dick and Susan as well as sundry others from this watering hole.

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: GeorgeH Date: 15 Aug 00 - 08:14 AM Yup, we were there . . and had a great week. Best Sidmouth we can recall, musically . . The Suzanne Sevanne (?sp - the Galician piper) concert was one of those rare moments of musical perfection, to be compared with the June Tabor Radway Cinema concert of many years ago. Of course there was the odd "damp squibb" - we decided to see if the Albion Band were as irrelevent as when we last heard them; that was a mistake, they were even worse (despite some fine fiddle playing)! Mind you, there's a wondeful irony there; the band that Hutchings founded to bring an "English" dimension to "Folk-Rock" (in contrast to the "Jigs and reels" of Fairport and Steeleye) now only approaches life when playing its "celtic" numbers (and is "blessed" with a "production line" mid-atlantic vocalist . .) Ooh, I feel BETTER for that spleen-venting . . G. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: Liz the Squeak Date: 15 Aug 00 - 03:37 PM Hey - I was at that June Tabor Radway Cinema concert - 1989 - she was nearly wearing a purple thing, and did Akabhar, I loved it, but was regrettably suffering from panda face and an asthmatic chest - I was the loud coughing that made her glare into the audience with murder on her mind. When she saw the state I was in I guess she thought someone had already done me over for coughing in their set!! The concert was recorded and made it to Folk on 2 the following week. My cough was (regretably) very audible!! I've coughed on Radio 2.... LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: GeorgeH Date: 16 Aug 00 - 07:24 AM Perhaps one day we'll come closer to meeting, Liz . . . Reminds me of a Dick Gaughan concert in the Beach Store. Started well with our youngest asleep in her pushchair. But then she woke up and started bawling for a feed, just as Dick was starting a song. We removed ourselves as quickly as possible . . Dick was increadibly nice about it, some of the audience rather less so! Said youngest now reckon her laughter can be picked out on TWO more recent live CD recordings . . . G. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth Festival 2000 From: Liz the Squeak Date: 16 Aug 00 - 05:39 PM MMM that sounds familiar - JK turfed my bratling out of a concert because she wanted to dance to the music and he didn't want her to...... this time HE was the sulky sod and the audience were happy to let her be..... you can't win.
