Subject: Any Irish women groups like Dubliners? From: GUEST,mg Date: 29 Jul 10 - 04:26 PM I have long been looking for a strong set of Irish, Celtic, Irish-American/Canadian (which of course is subsumed under the American title)...women singers that sang loud and strong..not always..they can sing sweetly as well..just not like the ones we have talked about before...no one who is singing like she is in a very important big cathedral with a wispy voice and perhaps buckets of mist surrounding her..you know the type. Women you would want to sing with...some of th DeDannaners were great, especially all together in reunions. That sort. Preferably all female. mg |

Subject: RE: Any Irish women groups like Dubliners? From: GUEST,mg Date: 29 Jul 10 - 05:14 PM I have not heard much of Cherish the Ladies singing..I am aware of their instrumentals though, which are very good. I think I have heard a bit of singing but wasn't drawn to it but I will check it out. Also, are there groups in PNW USA of such women to sing along with. I have realized that the type of music I like probably the best is just not available to me...mg |

Subject: RE: Any Irish women groups like Dubliners? From: ruairiobroin Date: 30 Jul 10 - 01:40 PM Take a peek at Seolta on Youtube. Usually only Caoimhe sings but Claire O Dowda(guitar) and Pauline(banjo and bodhran) sing too. |

Subject: RE: Any Irish women groups like Dubliners? From: GUEST Date: 30 Jul 10 - 03:36 PM I am trying various things out. So far no great stuff..I have been disappointed iwth Cherish the Ladies as singers although they are good it is just not what I am looking for. I do like them a lot as instrumentalists. I like foot stomping Irish. Surely there are women who do that or do I have to come over there myself? Trouble is I want to sing that way and really don't have the voice for it. mg |

Subject: RE: Any Irish women groups like Dubliners? From: GUEST,mg Date: 30 Jul 10 - 03:52 PM Here is a great group...probably not Irish..Merry Wives of Windsor..this is what I mean..women not afraid of drums etc. mg |

Subject: RE: Any Irish women groups like Dubliners? From: GUEST,mg Date: 30 Jul 10 - 04:02 PM Boy they can sing. I am now happy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZtH-uoMhns&feature=related This is sort of a cutesy bawdy song but you can hear their good voices... Where are they from? I would think England somewhere? mg |

Subject: RE: Any Irish women groups like Dubliners? From: GUEST,mg Date: 30 Jul 10 - 04:08 PM It seems they are from California. You can listen to them on CD baby..Julian of Norwich and Endearing Young Charms were quite good samples. How come I have never heard of them? mg |

Subject: RE: Any Irish women groups like Dubliners? From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Jul 10 - 04:15 PM Hmmm. I had a good time changing names into links in the above posts. I'm not sure I found the right Fallen Angels, and I had no luck finding a group called "Mna na Eireann" (Women of Ireland). I didn't find much on the Grehan Sisters, either - just a dozen or so tracks on an Irish folk music compilation. The Merry Wives of Windsor are very enjoyable. -Joe- Later note: Sheila says she was talking about these Fallen Angels |

Subject: RE: Any Irish women groups like Dubliners? From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 30 Jul 10 - 04:23 PM Maybe the all-female group Macalla was meant, their first lp was 'Mna na hEirreann. Nothing like the Dubliners though. |

Subject: RE: Any Irish women groups like Dubliners? From: GUEST,mg Date: 30 Jul 10 - 05:43 PM Why? I think they are great in all or most of their configurations. mg |

Subject: RE: Any Irish women groups like Dubliners? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 30 Jul 10 - 06:16 PM Of course they were great, but that's not the kind of similarity that comes to mind. |
