HELP!! My friend needs a "call" name for a black and white Basenji female. Her registered name is "Pony Express" and it would be nice if we could tie in with that. She and I have had no luck at all, and you guys are good with names...........please? No first letter requirement.

We also need a registered name for a tawny male Briard pup that needs to start with "S"---Sherman, Sasquatch, and Semper Fi have been rejected. His "call" name seems to be Bear.......looking at Secret Weapon........aaarrggh.

I always wanted a Golden Retriever named "Great Reluctance.

That way when I left for a job or a tour or a fishing trip I could tell my wife I was leaving her with Great Reluctance.

Presto for Pony Express. Then you could call out "Hey Presto" and she would come running...

And Samson, because Briards get pretty big, and it's not a good idea cutting their hair.

I've been around registered dogs all my life. My dad bred Cockers (before the breed became a massive clusterfuck) and I've never had anything but AKC registered dogs.....a Dal, a Dobe, and 4 Weimaraners. That said, I have a question that always drives me batshit.

Why not incorporate the call name into the registered name? More and more, dogs have call names that are unrelated to the reg name. Lord Nelson of the Knoll is called Barf or something. Why 'dis is? I always throw the name into the registered name--ie,--Jaeger is Jaeger Blauhund auf Valkyrie which incorporates the breeder kennel name too (which a lot of breeders ask of buyers as a favor). Anyway, why two names?

I like both Presto and Samson.

Alternatively, I like 'Magpie' for the Basenji, called Maggie.

But Samson (or Sampson) is great for his size, brawn and hairiness...

If I'm ever allowed to have a dog here in this house museum, he already has a name: 'Yeoman'(servant in a great house), called "Yeo".

:)

Before the Yorkshire Tornado and I decided not to get another dog, we were thinking about getting a red heeler and calling it Norman (or Nora) Bethune.

But maybe only the Canadians will get it.....

Hee hee dog names are great. My mum keeps deerhounds, show names Killoeeter Othello and Killoeeter Ruinean, pet names Strath and Ruin (dog and bitch), first dog was called Thane but I can't remember what his show name was. No wait! Astrian Bailc, I think...
I like 'Presto' too. How about 'Salmon' for the Briard, bears like to eat 'em...

Nipple Licker

S'Not Booger

Oh, too funny. Spaw, that is exactly what we are trying to do......but we are not having any luck with Pony Express. That name is already sent in and her mom is My Pony.Somehow, I don't think any of the above will work, sorry. It seems that someone missed both points--I would be happy to have a dog named after me, but the boy Briard can't very well go around with my name, as we all know that I am a bitch.

Is that Benji, out there?

Westering? What the hell is that? A movement to the west I would think.........Now if I can just make that fit with "Bloody Cunt Wart" I'll be a happy man. Lessee.........A cunt wart moving off to the west. I didn't know warts could move like that and besides....How do it know? Wouldn't west depend on the direction that someone is facing at the time? Hmmmmm.........This is gonna' keep me up late tonight............

I used to have a dog that had been run over by a caterpillar tractor....lost both hind legs and had steel prosthetic testicles....we called him "Sparky"

Had another dog was stone deaf, blind in one eye, tail shot off, lame hind legs, missing left front paw...called him "Lucky"

This may be the worst thread yet. If you are a dog lover, the thought of asking anyone about a name for a dog that you have come to know is pretty lame. Every dog has his own personality and the name seems to come pretty quickly. My wife always says that I like dogs more than I like people. Maybe.

Oh, never mind. Rich, that is VERY true, it's just that we are out of ideas and were looking for some suggestions. Obviously, few people read the parameters for the names. Rider might work, though. I'll suggest it to her mom. What does flipper have to do with the Pony Express? It doesn't start with S either. Sheesh.

Anyone familiar with the author Richard Adams, the guy who wrote "Watership Down", and " The Plague Dogs"? Well he wrote another book about a bear titled, "Shardik". Might do for a dog nick-named "Bear".

Sorcha,

How 'bout Fargo? (I always thought there was a connection between Wells Fargo and the Pony Express - competitors, maybe?).

This doesn't tie in with the Pony Express and it doesn't start with an "S", but a friend of mine named his pup "DEE-OH-JEE" (phonetic spelling/sound of the letters "D", "O", and "G"). He pronounces it with emphasis on the OH.

Dai,
Basenjis aren't congenitally deaf. They just don't bark.

Fargo just might work even though she is a female!! Dai, Basenjis are not deaf, and they only don't "bark". They are certainly NOT mute--they howl, sing, yodel and make the strangest noises. It's the Briard name that has to start with S as in Some Like it Hot(Marilyn), Simon Says(Simon)and Saving Grace(Gracie). "The Bear" is the only one without a paper name........I like Shardik--don't know what his mom will say. She was all hung up on Semper Fi until she found out there is a boxer kennel with that name..........

Actually my Golden Retriever who live 17 years and weighed 110 lbs. was named Schooner. The next one I get if ever will be called Clipper

Call him "Stop". That'll confuse the heck out of him when you call him............."Come Stop!" the dog will start and immediately stop each time you call him. "Come Stop!"

Well, I've learned what a dog's "call" name is, anyway...I didn't know about that term till now, so this is not the WORST thread ever. The worst would be a thread about finding a new role for William Shatner or a name for his new dog.

Hmmm.....

Leaving that totally aside for the moment, here's the name of one of our dogs:

official name: Oberon Waldemar Von Shlendrien

call name: "Valdy"

Nice, eh?
