Subject: Rainbow Made of Children lyrics/artist? From: jgable@imsa.edu Date: 27 Apr 98 - 10:43 PM I'm looking for lyrics and the artist of a song I learned at YMCA camp at about age 8... As best I remember, the song was called Rainbow Made of Children. I remember most of the lyrics but have no idea who the artist is. Chorus: We're a rainbow made of children, We're an army singing a song. There's no weapons that can stop us. Rainbow love is much too strong. Anyone who knows the origin or artist please let me know. Thanks. |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Made of Children lyrics/artist? From: GUEST Date: 05 Feb 06 - 04:08 PM Another one I enjoyed was Rainbow Made of Children. My brother and I learned it at a YMCA camp, and dearly loved it, and sang it together for many years after. Based on the lyrics, I suspect it was a 60's/70's hippie song, or at least had verses added then. [chorus] We're a rainbow Made of children We're an army singing songs Ain't no weapon That can harm us Rainbow love is much too strong I was born in Alabama, Saying Yes Sir to the man. When I found it got me nowhere, I will never say it again. [chorus] I was taught that Black was evil I was taught that white was good But in a rainbow made of children, Every color's understood. [chorus] Old man Posey took his rifle, Defending Mom and apple pie. When I handed him a flower, He just stopped and asked me why. [chorus] We're a rainbow Made of children We're an army singing songs Ain't no weapon That can harm us Rainbow love is much too strong |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Made of Children lyrics/artist? From: Jim Dixon Date: 10 Feb 06 - 12:28 AM Would you believe there's a web site called billyjack.com? It looks interesting. The owners, Delores Taylor and Tom Laughlin, are political activists. Click here for an ad for a CD called "The Music of Billy Jack" which contains RAINBOW MADE OF CHILDREN. It says it was written and performed by Lynn Baker. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rainbow Made of Children (Lynn Baker) From: GUEST,Counselor Otter Date: 16 May 10 - 10:35 PM We sang this at a Girl Scout camp in Western NY in the 90's. It was as old as we could remember, and had been passed down. We never used the more political verses, although I imagine this -is- an old hippy/protest song at its roots. We sang the following three verses (see above comments for full text - a few words were changed but the meaning was the same): I was raised in Mississippi, I was taught that black was evil, Now the rainbow's all one color. I loved this song when I was at camp, and we called it Rainbow Love, although I had never been able to find it under that name except in a co-counselor's online songbook. Does anyone have further information on Lynn Baker? |

Subject: Lyr Add: A RAINBOW MADE OF CHILDREN (Lynn Baker) From: Jim Dixon Date: 15 May 16 - 06:38 PM I verified the lyrics below by listening carefully to the actual scene from the movie "Billy Jack" which I saw at YouTube: [Tune: "Can the Circle Be Unbroken."] 1. We're a rainbow – made of children. We're an army – singin' songs. There's(?) no weapons – that can stop us. Rainbow love is – much too strong. 2. Big man Posner – took his rifle, Defendin' mom – and apple pie. So I offered – him a flower. He just stood – and asked me why. 3. My old grandma – was a princess, And my granddad – was a chief. Thanks to those of – our white neighbors, Both my folks – are on relief. 4. I was raised in – Mississippi, Sayin' "Yes, sir" – to the man, But I found it – got me nowhere, So I won't – say it again. [IMDb.com says "A Rainbow Made of Children" is sung by Lynn Baker. I assume she is the one who sings verses 1 and 2, but verses 3 and 4 are sung by two other women. Starting with verse 3, it is sung in call-and-response fashion, with a crowd doing the responses, e.g. "My old grandma (my old grandma) was a princess (was a princess)" etc. After verse 4, the song is sung in the background behind dialog, and at that point it becomes very difficult to understand, so I did not attempt to transcribe any further. Verse 3 line 3 doesn't make grammatical sense to me, but that's how I hear it.] |
