Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: EBarnacle Date: 02 Feb 12 - 09:31 AM I despise the whole "It's art because I say it is" movement. They are a bunch of incompetent artists who are very good at self aggrandizement. Unfortunately, it goes back to the urinal about a century ago, includes people who sell monochrome panels for outrageous sums, Andy Asshole, drip painters and numerous others. Robert Raushenberg's sleeping bag especially comes to mind. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: EBarnacle Date: 02 Feb 12 - 09:38 AM Oh yes, I left out pretentious poseurs. Some of them at least had the courtesy to begin their professions as real artists. Drips and dribbles? Feh! |

Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: Don Firth Date: 02 Feb 12 - 02:03 PM I knew a guy some years back who was an "artist." Although he was a good friend—he played the guitar and sang folk songs, and was actually pretty good at that—he use to turn out some of the damnedest things and call them "Art." In fact, a Paris art journal called him one of America's most promising young artists. He was really very good. I saw a series of paintings of water birds that he did that would have made Audubon jealous. But someplace along the line, he went goofy. Case in point: He turned out a painting that he called "Flashing." I'm examining it as it hangs there on the wall, and I just didn't get it. It was a rumpled sheet of thin metal—copper—nailed to three boards (1 x 12s) and daubed with paint in a fairly haphazard manner. It had a price tag of $500.00 and was hanging in a local gallery. "What is it?" I asked. "Well," said my friend, "I was repairing my roof, fixing some leaks around the chimney, and I had some copper flashing left over." Oooooookay. . . . Somebody bought it. Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: Charley Noble Date: 02 Feb 12 - 02:11 PM Cristo is not what I'd call an artist but he is an interesting landscape decorator. I like what he did with Central Park in NYC a few years back. As for Abstract Expressionism or Minimalist Art I just don't find them challenging creative work. If almost anyone can replicate what such an "artist" does, it's only technical work. "White on White" or "Sheep Lost in a Blizzard" attached below is a case in point: Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: katlaughing Date: 02 Feb 12 - 02:18 PM I hated the thought of one of his first "installations," Rifle Falls in Colorado, which he "draped." IMO, one cannot improve on the beauty of Nature and it is an abomination to try to do so esp. i such a pretentious manner! kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: Don Firth Date: 02 Feb 12 - 03:00 PM No kidding!! A well-known artist (abstract expressionist) produce a number of paintings in one shot by laying a fairly large sheet of canvas out on the floor, opening many dozens of tubes of paint and scattering them randomly all over it, then driving back and forth over it several dozen times in his MG-TD. Then he cut the large sheet into smaller sheets, framed them, and sold them individually. Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 03 Feb 12 - 02:36 PM And what about Tracey Emin's 'My Bed', for which she won the Turner Prize. She has the nerve to put RA after her name, as she's exhibited at the Royal Academy. 'My Bed' consisted of a dirty, littered and unmade bed, complete with used tampon. Rumour has it that a cleaner at the gallery tried to tidy it up! And what about the pile of bricks by Carl Andre, exhibited at the Tate Gallery and lauded to the skies by twits who should know better. As you say, Charlie Noble, people who buy that sort of stuff deserve it! |

Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: Bill D Date: 03 Feb 12 - 03:38 PM Salvadore Dali once built a 'pen' in his studio, with a divider down the middle. In one side he put a model in a bikini with a motorcycle. In the other side he put several hogs. He started the motorcycle, had his helpers throw slop to the hogs, then stated spraying chocolate syrup over the entire scene. Then his helpers tossed a canvas over the whole thing and tamped it down with broomsticks. He removed the canvas and hung it...(and presumably sold it) No, I don't remember how they made sure the girl was kept safe, or whether she was ON the cycle. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: Monique Date: 03 Feb 12 - 03:54 PM Rooosen: the guy writes some sort of description of a virtual painting and says it to the audience who imagines the painting. Then they can buy the blank canvas with the "lyrics" copied on the back of it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 03 Feb 12 - 04:41 PM Fairly recently there was a craze for displaying corpses of various animals preserved in formaldehyde in large glass tanks. This was called 'Art' and the critics thought it was wonderful. You really wonder just what goes on in these folks' heads. Do you suppose the 'Artists' are fully aware of the daftness of all this, and are laughing all the way to the bank? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: Bill D Date: 03 Feb 12 - 04:52 PM It is said that Picasso (who was a decent artist) at one time became so cynical about the 'public' that he would splash a canvas, or even a piece of paper, with some scrawls and sign it and sell it...or even toss it out the window...to show how anything with his name on it was snapped up. I suppose I ought to ask Snopes,,,,,, |

Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: MGM·Lion Date: 03 Feb 12 - 05:00 PM Tracey Emin, RA, doesn't just mean that she has exhibited in the RA exhibition, but that she is an actual elected Academician! The depressing thing is that, if you ever see any of her actual drawings, they are beautiful; but for some reason she prefers all this nonsensical 'conceptual' art stuff, or whatever the hell they call it, and that is what they exhibit and people buy. Alas! As for Dali ~ there have been few better draftsmen ever; his drawing is superb. And some of his concepts are interesting at that: look at the Metamorphosis of Narcissus in the Tate, or the Mae West Lips sofa. ~M~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: MGM·Lion Date: 03 Feb 12 - 05:03 PM There is a story about how Picasso was having some built-in shelves made, and got a bit of paper to show the carpenter how he wanted them fitted. When the job was finished, he asked, how much? 'Nothing, Master,' the man replied. 'If you would just please sign the sketch...' True? Who knows... ~M~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: GUEST Date: 03 Feb 12 - 05:24 PM I thought the ultimate was a guy who turned up South East At Six, or whatever the regional news programme in the UK was at the time. This would have been sometime in the early to mid 80's, I think, and I never could make my mind up whether he was serious, trying to pull a fast one, or just taking the monumental piss out of the Art World (note the capitalisation!). Basically, he ws saying "I am an artist therefore anything I touch becomes a work of art. Take this 50p bog brush. Now that I have handled it, it is a work of art. To you, £50..." I strongly suspect he was a shyster trying to gull the gullible. But he could very easily have been a piss-taker... (And as you may gather, no I don't think much of modern so-called art. I think Picasso's work is damn ugly, but I can respect the man, because I know he could draw & paint (which I certainly can't). He just chose to represent the world... differently. But Tracy Emin's unmade bed, et al? Pretentious shite!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 04 Feb 12 - 11:53 AM I've twice visited the Museum-Theatre Dali at Figueres, and was enthralled by his art. I love all those melted watches draped over trees, and the sofa shaped into huge red lips. I was also enchanted by his little be-jewelled illuminated pictures, eg the Space Elephant, which I viewed in London some years ago. I also used to go to the Summer Exhibition of the RA, and honestly adored much of what was exhibited. I'm not against 'Modern Art' per se, but I think I can distinguish between the inspired and brilliant, and the downright daft and revolting! (At least in my humble opinion - I suppose I'm entitled to have one!) |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: Raedwulf Date: 04 Feb 12 - 11:59 AM Sorry, Pete, but if she *can* draw, she's been keeping it very well hid! The bed, the blocks of lard & chocolate, that tent, some very childish scrawls produced for something or other worthy... Her "public output" is dire, and you presumably don't blame us poor ignorant heathens for our ignorance! ;-) Anthony Gorman is thought provoking, and at least when Chris Offili produced that elephant dung picture-come-sculpture, the pretentious blather that went with it was complemented by some genuine artistry. But Tracy Emin and most other headline Modern Art (e.g. Damien "What Shall I saw In Half This Time" Hirst)? Nah, sorry... |

Subject: RE: BS: Cristo Sued From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 04 Feb 12 - 01:13 PM I've just remembered the most ghastly bronze statue you ever saw, which sits in the Cathedral Close outside Norwich Cathedral. It's called Mother and Child, and looks as if it's been made from grey plasticene. Her face and breasts are melting in blobs and the 'Child' looks like a bundle of rags. A gent called George Fullard produced this horror. No doubt the daft and misguided Cathedral Big Nobs thought they were being ever-so-intellectual in commissioning it. It needs to be melted down and made into a toilet or something useful. I bet G. Fullard Esquire had a good laugh when he cashed his cheque! |
