Subject: A pleasant way to start the day From: paddymac Date: 04 Dec 01 - 05:13 AM There's a bit of a chill in the air this morning, and I'm up sooner than I have any reason to be. I'm in one of my "down on coffee" periods, and not exactly excited about any of the dozen or so varieties of herbal teas in the cabinet. What to do? Without really thinking about it, I reverted to a most pleasurable cool weather beverage "discovered" while "tenting" in three feet of snow in service to my country many years ago. I'd forgotten how delightful it is. What is it? Hot chocolate, with a bit of sloe gin added for flavor. If you like chocolate covered cherries, you'll love this stuff. Hope the rest of 'catland can start their day in an equally pleasurable fashion now and again. Hmmm, Good! |

Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: Fibula Mattock Date: 04 Dec 01 - 05:22 AM Sounds delicious, but I could envisage what remains of my productivity draining away after a couple of cups of that! Ooooh, and I've just got some white chocolate hot chocolate which might be good with Bailey's in it... Anyone know how someone in the UK can get their hands on the Mexican hot chocolate that comes in segmented slabs and is gorgeous, sweet and rich? |

Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: Gervase Date: 04 Dec 01 - 05:30 AM You mean Montezuma's hot stuff, with chilli? It's wonderful stuff. You can get it at this site, but the post and packing is exorbitant. Other than that, there's a health food shop in Oxford that sells it (which doesn't help much as I can't remember the danred name!). |

Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: GUEST,micca at work Date: 04 Dec 01 - 07:04 AM I dont know about starting the day but a great way of treating a cold walk,(or ending the day) is cocoa as made in the Russian Arctic convoys, learned from and AB who served on them. Take a large 1pt British(20oz) mug add 2 dessertspoons (heaped) of cocoa powder(the best you can get add 2 dessert spoons of condensed milk mix to a smooth paste add boiling water stirring continuosly to about 3/4 full still stirring add 3 oz of dark rum (or to taste), stirring, drink,( if the temperature falls below about 50C it sets. Enjoy,

Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: catspaw49 Date: 04 Dec 01 - 07:10 AM Hmmm.....I'll have to give these a try. Generally I start my day by giving my nuts a good scratching......but a change is good sometimes. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: Fibula Mattock Date: 04 Dec 01 - 07:47 AM Chilli and chocholate - two very wonderful ingredients! Nice! The Mexican stuff I meant was hot chocolate my friend brought back with him. It's in a solid block - you break off a bit (it's segmented) and mix it in with the hot milk - it takes ages to stir it all in and melt/dissolve it, but it's worth it. I think it was called "Grandma" something-or-other. It was goooood. My latest receipe is really good cocoa mixed with a spoonful of horlicks or ovaltine and hot milk to give a choclate malty taste like liquid maltesers. MMmmmm. Try Rumplemintz (sp?) liqueur or creme de menthe mixed in with hot chocolate - delicious. |

Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: katlaughing Date: 04 Dec 01 - 08:51 AM Ghiardelli's is supposed to be excellent. Fib, if you can't get it any other way, I'll ask my niece about it. She lives just over the border from Mexico, is a chocolate freak like the rest of us, and possibly could pick up some on her next trip or maybe even where she lives. kat |

Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: Fibula Mattock Date: 04 Dec 01 - 10:03 AM Sheesh, Guest, it's difficult enough to open my eyes in the morning... After doing a bit of searching I came up with what I think is the chocolate I was talking about: Ibarra Chocolate: A brand of Mexican sweet chocolate used primarily for making hot chocolate. The chocolate is sold in the form of 3-inch round tablets that are packaged in octagon-shaped, cylindrical, bright yellow and red cardboard boxes. Ibarra chocolate is available in the imported food section in many supermarkets and specialty food shops. There's also a link to it: http://www.novamex.com/english/products/ibarra.html I'll try and track it down to buy it online. |

Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: catspaw49 Date: 04 Dec 01 - 10:14 AM For those of you who like the Chili-Chocolate idea. you'd also probably enjoy "Cincinnati-Style Chili" which is a bit unique. It sells well in Cincy and the two main chains, Skyline and Goldstar, have expanded out a bit. There's a history as why it came to be, but the chili is very different with the two added ingredients of chocolate and nutmeg. It may be an acquired taste, but it's damn good. I make about every third pot around here in Cincy style. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: Kim C Date: 04 Dec 01 - 10:45 AM Ibarra chocolate is awesome! We have lots of Mexican groceries around here, Fib, so if for some strange reason you can't find it online, or Sins can't find any, holler at me. I know exactly where to get some. I'd like to try chili chocolate. What do I do, melt down my Ibarra and put a dash of cayenne in it? Personally, I like hot cocoa with a little peppermint schnapps, and whipped cream on top. Spaw, we used to have an Empress Chili here in Nashville, which was Cincinnati-style chili. I loved it! What's your recipe for chili? |

Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: Bert Date: 04 Dec 01 - 11:38 AM We picked up a bunch of Mexican Chocolate going cheap at a local grocery store. "Abuelita Autentico Chocolate Mexicano Para Mesa". You should be able to get close to it by making regular cocoa with a lot of sugar and a little cinnamon. But I'm in agreement with Micca, I like cocoa with a good slurp of Meyer's Rum. |

Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: paddymac Date: 04 Dec 01 - 01:07 PM Damn. Now I'm gonna have to go get a bottle of Meyer's, just so I can give Micca's recipe a try. I've never had it in hot chocolate, but love it as a summer drink - on the rocks with key lime &/or juice. Godd for preventing scurvy. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: Micca Date: 04 Dec 01 - 02:17 PM Paddymac, the summer drink is a REAL Cuba Libre abd the proportions are VITAL.. 2 oz Dark rum of your choice over a lot of ice( a Pint (British Tankard is good for this),br> 1 oz of Fresh lime Juice and a slice of lime for garnish( these key? limes sound interesting) and 10 ozs of Coca Cola( NOT DIET, and not pepsi) and stir, the colder the better Have NO plans for the rest of the day.. after the second or third one of these, you wont care!!!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: Amos Date: 05 Dec 01 - 05:17 PM Taffy Pouw, I wasn't calling anyone in particular a Limey -- it was with respect to old Bonaparte, against whom many old English sea dogs had a special grudge, ye see, that I said I was on the Limey's side -- because of the waste of good cognac. Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: Gervase Date: 07 Dec 01 - 05:51 AM Morticia, Mulled wine and beer would be the answer then - cinamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves, orange peel, lemon zest and all - and guaranteed to make you sleep like a log. They never said what was in it when we had the first one and it was really nice. They didn't invent it as the "VMP" is a legitimate drink, they said they just created the "nightcap" version. Subject: RE: BS: A pleasant way to start the day From: gnu Date: 07 Dec 01 - 02:23 PM The only reason I offer the following drink is that many people suffer from heart burn when ingesting fruit juices. A buddy of mine likes rum and orange juice. This combination will give you heartburn, if you are prone. However... orange juice first, rum (always keep your rum in the freezer), maraschino cherry juice and two cherries (leave the stem on if you are talented... nudge, nudge, wink, wink). Pour the rum and cherry juice slowly and do not stir. The rum will sink. The drink will become stronger as you drink it, but the mixture at the bottom will soothe your stomach as it does your mind. Eat the cherries in a bodacious manner, thus signalling your host to offer you another. I have named this drink a "Snarple". No... I have no idea why... they wouldn't tell me the next day. |
