Subject: RE: visiting new york & new england august-folk clubs? From: SINSULL Date: 28 Jun 10 - 10:08 AM The Press Room on the 21st will have its monthly shanty sing. Friday nights there are traditional music nights. I don't know you, gazza. Where are you staying while in New England? I can usually offer a bed and a meal. I will be working so I can't do much more although Jacqui and Tami may be around (not sure) to play tour guide. |

Subject: RE: visiting new york & new england august-folk cl From: Charley Noble Date: 28 Jun 10 - 10:25 AM gazza2- What are your interests in folk music? The Press Room shanty session in Portsmouth, NH, on the 3rd Saturday, 3:30 to 7:30 pm, as mentioned above is outstanding if you like sea music. However, every Friday there's a session at the same place with a mixture of tunes as well as singing. There are several other concerts and open-mics happening in Maine in Wells, Portland, South Portland, Brunswich, Bath, Camden and Rockland but it all depends on how far you want to go. Subject: RE: visiting new york & new england august-folk clubs? From: GUEST,gazza2 Date: 06 Jul 10 - 06:53 AM Hi, Sorry about the delay in replying, trying to sort out travel arrangements. Dave - we are staying at the Astor on the park, Central park August11-13th. Charley and Sinsull - we are going to try to see Bob Zentz in Bath (Portland??) on the 15th August. Any recommendations on places to stay would be welcomed. We've hired a car (14th-21st) and have vaguely thought about Boston area, Fitchburg (don't ask!!) and Cape Cod before spending Saturday 21st-Tuesday 24th in Boston itself. We like most kinds of folk - unaccompanied, guitar, melodeon, Roy Bailey, Stan Rogers, George Papavgeras - club singaround sort of environment rather that concert. Kind regards, Gazza2 the happy wanderer |

Subject: RE: visiting new york & new england august-folk clubs? From: Booklynrose Date: 09 Jul 10 - 06:06 PM Sorry, it looks as if the Folk Music Society of NY has programs before and after you visit NYC in August. I'll list our August activities just in case. August 4 Open sing (song swap) August 7 Swimming/Singing party August 7 Chantey sing evening August 29 Singing picnic with Borderline Folk Club Information at www.folkmusicny.org Can you come back later in the fall? In September, & our concerts and our Sacred Harp sessions pick up again. We'll also be singing at the Medieval Fair on October 3. Then on November 5-7 our Festival of Traditional Music, Eisteddfod, is a couple of hours away from the city at the Hudson Valley Resort & Spa. Eisteddfod is worth another visit to the U.S. with Paul Brown, Lorraine & Bennett Hammond, Sharon Katz, Caroline Paton, and 20 other outstanding musicians. |

Subject: RE: visiting new york & new england august-folk cl From: Charley Noble Date: 09 Jul 10 - 09:21 PM Gazza2- We certainly will look forward to meeting you at the Bob Zentz concert at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, August 15. Unfortunately we can't offer hospitality in August, given that everything is filled up with vacationing relatives. There are, however, a number of good B&B's in Bath which you should be able to check out on the internet. While you are in NYC, you may want to check out the schedules of the South Street Seaport Chantey Session (looks as if you'll miss that one), the Song Swap at the Ethical Cultural Center in Brooklyn, or the acoustic gathering at Banjo Jim's. These are all fine participatory gatherings. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: visiting new york & new england august-folk cl From: Suffet Date: 10 Jul 10 - 09:27 PM I believe what Charley calls the Song Swap at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture is officially called the Community Open Sing. It occurs the first Wednesday of every month from 7 to 10 PM. We just had one this past Wednesday, July 7, and the next one will be on August 4, followed by one on September 1. The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture is located at 53 Prospect Park West between 1st and 2nd Streets in the Park Slope section. --- Steve |
