Subject: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 19 Nov 09 - 04:08 AM Just taking a straw poll... ...anybody fancy an early evening singaround in Central London? I'm thinking that by starting at 7pm (or earlier? 6.30? 6.15?) we commuters could have a couple of hours and still be home at not-too-late-o'clock. Your input gratefully received but here's my initial thoughts: I've identified a perfect venue: quiet upstairs bar, not too big, not too small. It's at the north end of Waterloo Bridge so ideal for those commuting into Waterloo and Charing Cross. Handy for tube lines to everywhere else. End of The Strand adjacent to Covent Garden/Aldwych. We can have it for free on quiet nights (i.e. probably Mondays unless a paying customer wants to pay real money for it) Bombardier and London Pride on tap. The Pride is excellent. I could perhaps bring a "house" guitar. I'm working in Somerset House for a few months, so it'd be - for me, at any rate - an occasional and probably short-term commitment. But I'd be more than happy to set up a trial one-off and take it from there. Realistically, we might be looking at the new year, but I'm sort of hoping we could squeeze in Monday 30th November if there's enough interest. Your constructive thoughts more than welcome. But, more than that, your strong commitment to support it would be excellent! Either post to this thread or pm me. Let's do it! |

Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST,matt milton Date: 19 Nov 09 - 08:52 AM Definitely. I work in Shellmex House, 80 Strand. Is that the Savoy Tup you're thinking of? I've often thought of going in there and asking about putting on acoustic gigs... I even have a travel guitar under my desk, which can be whipped out at a moment's notice for lunchtime practice in the basement. Send me a PM - keep us posted! |

Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 20 Nov 09 - 11:43 AM Pierre: I've opted to go for a "start singing" time of 6.15: although I'll probably get there more like 6. I expect people will drift in (and out) pretty constantly throughout the following couple of hours (or more!). And that's fine. We won't be chastising late arrivals or early leavers. In a way, that's the whole point of it: to be "commuter friendly". Plus, being free to get in, there's no need to "get your money's worth". Here's the text of the poster: Acoustic/singers' open night Monday 30th November, from 6.15pm Commuter-friendly early evening session All styles of unplugged music welcome – folk, singer/songwriter etc. Come and join in: bring your voices, instruments and/or ears ...but please show consideration during performances Free entry: just buy yourself some drinks! At The Savoy Tup, 2 Strand Street, The Strand WC2R 0BA Excellent, friendly pub with great beers and dedicated upstairs music room. I'm getting a very good feeling about this... ~8^) |

Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Morris-ey Date: 24 Nov 09 - 05:58 AM A pinstripe-suited sing-around - somebody take photos. |
|
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 24 Nov 09 - 06:21 AM There are no dress code expectations, Morris-ey, although the wearing of flip-flops and shorts may make the wearer feel conspicuous. There is no expectation on when people should get there or for how long they stay. It's commuter friendly with the accent on friendly. Even those who pop in for a quick half and "merely" join in on a chorus or two will be most welcome. There is only one rule: that everyone is respectfully quiet during turns. ~8^) |
|
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: matt milton Date: 24 Nov 09 - 06:32 AM I'm going to try to take some posters into Kings College today lunchtime. Their music department is on the Strand. I figure they must have a noticeboard somewhere. Question is, as a greying 35-year-old, can I still pass muster as a student to stroll past the security guard? I figure I'm scruffy enough to exude a 'mature student' aura - I do work in book publishing after all. Maybe I'll do LSE too. |
|
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Mo the caller Date: 24 Nov 09 - 06:35 AM Good luck with it, (bit far from Cheshire) Is it going to be every week? You said "We can have it for free on quiet nights (i.e. probably Mondays unless a paying customer wants to pay real money for it)" so what happens if there is a paying customer? It might be a good idea to negotiate how much notice the landlord will give you - if you are providing him with regular drinkers he ought to be willing to give you some security. |
|
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 24 Nov 09 - 06:44 AM Many imponderables at the mo, Mo. If we have a full room of free-spending, free-thinking, free-singing, free-drinking happy punters and punterettes then we'll be in a strong position. If there's only three or four of us sipping a half to make it last all night, then our position will be a little less strong... ...weekly might be pushing things. Maybe fortnightly. As I said in the first post it's a trial one-off for now and we'll take it from there. Some posters have already said they'll come in January or March or not Mondays so there are all sorts of possibilities. |

Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Leadfingers Date: 24 Nov 09 - 07:46 AM Well Pubic Transport means I cvan drink as muh as I like - Or can AFFORD , thinking about London Beer Prices . |

Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 25 Nov 09 - 03:51 AM Bolleaux!!! CORRECTION It's 2 Savoy Street. Hopefully the correct post code will have already pointed out my rather basic error and not confused you too much. How embarrassing... |

|
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 25 Nov 09 - 01:08 PM "can I still pass muster as a student to stroll past the security guard?" If questioned, just ask casually where the Dean's office is (or some such thing..) Never paid yet to get into Kings Cambridge - but then the man I've visited with (& who's blagged the security) does have a confident public school persona, teamed with suitably scruffy appearance. |
|
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST,Essex Girl Date: 25 Nov 09 - 01:47 PM Popped in there for a quick drink at lunchtime today. I'm not surprised they want us there as there were only 4 other people in the downstairs bar! Hopefully I will be bringing a couple more bodies with me. |

Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 26 Nov 09 - 01:25 PM Despite My last Mudcat thread entitled "Folk Sushhhhhing Folk" and all the Rigmorole and Hot Air that went with it I am confident that Caters, singers and musicans will be considerate to all performers, Although half cut suits that have been Lording it up all afternoon well I cannot speak for them. Posters are up in Museum Mess room feed back is little at moment but from experience It will get better nearer the time, Kind regards to all Pierre. |

Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 27 Nov 09 - 03:54 AM Thanks, Pierre. Just a final reminderette for those of you who might be planning to come on Monday and who only access the web from work... Yes, it's The Savoy Tup in Savoy Street. Yes, it starts at 6.15pm. Yes, you can arrive earlier if you like. No, you won't be reprimanded for turning up late. Nor will you be chastised for leaving early. Yes, there will be a very decent 'house' guitar available. Yes, it's in the upstairs room, so: No, we won't be mixing with "half cut suits who have been lording it up all afternoon" See you Monday! Don't forget to arrange your pass with whomsover issues you with these items!! Cheers Hamish ~8^) |

Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST Date: 27 Nov 09 - 05:13 AM - oh, and I was hoping for a bit of chastising as well !! Any chance of a 'house' fiddle as well ? Sal the Gal :-) |
