I thought "ooo two people in Mudchat, I'll drop in for a natter" well seems they are playing hide and seek cos whenI go into mudchat it says two users but ain't no one there! Is it my computer playing silly buggers?

Not odd at all. There are now four people in chat. Two in a 'private' room and two in the general room. The private chats don't show on the opening chat page. FYI.

Any good reason why the counter includes the "private rooms" users?

Al,

At the top of the page is a rectangular box that says quick links in the space. To the right is a small downward pointing arrowhead thingy, and to the right of that a small square that says go. (Ya gotta be logged in to access chat.) Put your cursor on the little black arrow. Read down the list that drops down. You'll see chat room (I think). Click that. There you will be.

I have to say, I enjoyed ICQ as a chat program. Totally stand-alone from my browser. It sat in one corner and poked you if someone wanted to chat. In modern browsers, I may have 12-18 tabs open and forget to look at Google or Facebook. In ICQ, you got a sound or a blinking icon if someone popped in....and messages were saved for you.
If Google could manage to make it *immediately evident* that someone in your circles was in a chat, it would help....or if YOU could send a 'ping' to any possible members of your circles that YOU were free to chat. Even a blinking of the page icon would help.

GAWD doesn't know...but I do! I occasionally chat with an old friend I haven't seen in years...who has a 'membership' just in order to chat with me. I thought they intended to come by and I opened a private room....but they are not about.

I'm sorry that private rooms are 'counted' and lure the unsuspecting.
