Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lily of Picadilly From: Jim Dixon Date: 05 Sep 02 - 12:46 AM I found this excerpt from someone's WW2 memoir: (http://www.historicalroleplay.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/topic.cgi?forum=53&topic=7)
Here's a German site that mentions a song called "Lilly von Piccadilly": http://www.bobsmusic.de/cdt-z.htm But, strangely, those are the only references I can find to the song, even making allowances for variant spelling, like LILY/LILLY/LILLIE, and PICADILLY/PICCADILLY. (I also found references to a WW2 military airplane, an instrumental jazz piece, and a racehorse, all called "Piccadilly Lilly") |

Subject: Lyr Add: LILLY FROM PICCADILLY (Mickey Balsam) From: GUEST Date: 11 Feb 12 - 04:51 PM LILLY FROM PICCADILLY (Cpl. Mickey Balsam) 1st Verse I took a trip to London To look around the town When I got Piccadilly The sun was going down I've never seen such darkness The night was black as pitch When suddenly – in front of me I thought I saw a witch. CHORUS Oh, it was Lilly from Piccadilly You know the one I mean I'll spend each pay-day That's my hey-hey day With Lilly, my blackout queen. 2nd Verse I could not see her figure I could not see her face But, if I ever meet her I'll know her any place. I could not tell if she was blonde Or a dark brunette But gosh oh gee did she give me A thrill I won't forget. CHORUS 3rd Verse They sing of Dirty Gertie And of Mademoiselle in French But give me a Commando In a fox-hole or a trench And in the thick of battle You'll find me happy there But say chums – be sure she comes From Piccadilly Square CHORUS (One just like Lilly, etc.) 4th Verse Now when my children ask me Please tell us Daddy dear What did you do to win the war I'll answer with a sneer Your Daddy was a hero His best he always fought With bravery – he gave to the Commandos his support CHORUS 5th Verse She said to me "Oh Yankee Boy Are you lonesome are you blue Just come around the corner I'll show you what to do". We went up some dark alley I said, "I love you, kid", She said "OK- but first you''ll pay" So I gave her twenty quid. CHORUS 6th Verse She leaned her back against the wall I took her in my arms She gave me her very all And her buxom charms I lost my head, I lost my heart I even lost my hat It was a sin – she should have been A circus acrobat. CHORUS 7th Verse And then we went up to her flat And when we were in bed It was so very pleasant that I said some day we'd wed She even gave me breakfast She sure did treat me nice Oh what she did for twenty quid Was cheap at half the price. CHORUS 8th Verse I was a few days later I began to feel so queer And then I went on sick call The Doc said it's quite clear You've had some love "Commando Style" Now, son, please don't be shy You're not to blame –tell me her name So I said with a sigh. CHORUS Copyright 1943 by Cp. Mickey Balsam When performed in public the following must be stated – "Lilly from Piccadilly" by Cp. Mickey Balsam of the Flying Eagles Orchestra". |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lily of Picadilly From: Lighter Date: 12 Feb 12 - 11:19 AM For those who don't know (and at this point, why should they?) "Piccadilly commando" was the humorous name given by American soldiers to the streetwalkers around Piccadilly Circus. PS: "Streetwalker" is an old-time word used by us geezers for street prostitutes. It doesn't mean, as my students sometimes thought, "pedestrian." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lily of Picadilly From: Lighter Date: 12 Feb 12 - 11:21 AM Film fans will recall that the bomber piloted by Gregory Peck in "Twelve O'Clock High" (1949) was named "Piccadilly Lily." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lily of Picadilly From: GUEST Date: 15 Aug 12 - 11:38 AM In the fifth verse, line five is missing. It should be "We went up some dark alley" My parents did a home recording of this song when I was six years old. At the time I had no clue what the song was about.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lily of Picadilly From: GUEST,Eva Date: 23 Nov 12 - 02:13 AM Hey Guys I have been looking for this silly song for some time and stumbled across this thread. So my thanks as I play piano and do a lot of ww2 songs for vfw's and I know the guys will get a huge kick out of this. The words seems to fit the music I have heard in the movie Final Days Of Paten but the words are a tad different then the basic two verse style in the movie. I think I'll sort of combine the two versions for giggles. My pop use to sing a lot of the war songs and he had a rather colourful version of Bless Em All which had little resemblance to the actual song words. I assume the GI's often made their own verses up to various songs of that period. |

Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Lily of Picadilly / Lily from Piccadilly From: GUEST,Guest: Court in Tennessee Date: 07 Jun 13 - 01:07 PM I remember George C. Scott singing a version of this in "Patton," or maybe it was "Final Days of Patton," if Eva above is right. It was on TV around 1984, since that's when I got my first VCR and recorded it as a test, and watched it a couple times. This is what I remember: Oh Lilly, from Piccadilly She is the blackout queen. Lilly, from Piccadilly Ugliest girl I've seen. With searchlights playing overhead Til Messerschmidts are gone, Please don't take your mask off You look much better with it on! CHORUS: Oh Lilly, from Piccadilly She is the blackout queen! [can't recall the other verses] |

Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Lily of Picadilly / Lily from Piccadilly From: GUEST,Guest Date: 17 Dec 15 - 02:45 AM My Yorkshire friend's version of this is as follows (have edited out the swear words somewhat): I've got a sister Lily she's a pro in Piccadilly And my mother does the same along the Strand And my father flogs his ar.....e at the Elephant and Castle We're the finest fu....g fmily in the land. |

Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Lily of Picadilly / Lily from Piccadilly From: Steve Gardham Date: 17 Dec 15 - 01:40 PM I know a bit more to this one and the tune I sing it to is of course 'The Road to the Isles'. I am sitting in the dungeon with me bollocks in me hand And the shadow of me penis on the wall, And the hairs are growing thick from me arsehole to me dick And the mice are playing billiards with me balls. Oh, I have a sister Lily, she's a whore in Piccadilly And me mother is another on the Strand And me father flogs his aresehole in the Elephant and Castle, Oh, we're the cleanest family in the land. There are probably more verses. |

Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Lily of Picadilly / Lily from Piccadilly From: GUEST Date: 10 Mar 24 - 03:29 PM This version of LILY FROM PICCADILLY Is the only set of "Written" lyrics for this particular variation of the song that has many variations. This one is the funniest. So I wrote them down. I have two General George S. Patton movies. (4 Star General) Who commanded the 7th Army in WW2 and is considered the best U.S. General ever, or at least one of them. One is 1970 "Patton" & 1984 "The Last Days of Patton" Both of them George C. Scott plays General Patton. In the 1984 movie, he sings this song about a girl "streetwalker" named "Lily" I liked it so much I wrote the lyrics down because there are several versions wrote down online, but not this one... Bottom Address is the 2 minute youtube “Lilly from Piccadilly" from "Last Days of Patton" Movie I watched it on "TubeMate" app HERE IT IS : To Music..... It's Lilly, from Piccadilly She is the blackout queen. Lilly, from Piccadilly Ugliest girl I've seen. With searchlights moving overhead Till Messerschmitt's¹ are gone, Don't take your mask off You look much better with it on! Yeah! CHORUS: Oh Lilly, from Piccadilly She is the blackout queen! (Come on everybody sing!) It's Lilly, from Piccadilly She is the blackout queen. Oh, Lilly, from Piccadilly Ugliest girl I've seen! Her wig should never bother you She's several missing parts One glass eye, wooden leg She's still the queen of hearts CHORUS: Oh Lilly, from Piccadilly She is the blackout queen! Good, good! It's Lilly, from Piccadilly She is the blackout queen Lilly, from Piccadilly Ugliest girl I've seen Who cares if she has pigeon toed A voice that's rather harsh She's one who drinks, An RAF² type, handlebar mustache CHORUS: Oh Lilly, from Piccadilly She loves the blackout, Lays her rubber mat out, She won't let you back out, You won't pay a stack out, For Lily...eeee, the blackout queen! O-lay! ( ¹ ) "Messerschmitt" was a German Air raft company that made bombers that bombed London in the Battle of Britain in World War II. They also made fighter aircraft of different variations, incl jet aircraft. 64 types of aircraft in all, according to wik. ( ² ) RAF = Royal Air Force https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ_fXaXholM |
