Subject: Lyr Req: Kugel songs, recipes, and information From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Nov 09 - 03:38 PM I posted a song that mentions a kugel in another thread. This one is a potato kugel, but my idea of kugels in general is that they are not-very-glorified macaroni and cheese. I'm wondering if there are other songs about kugele, and if anyone has interesting recipes. -Joe- Here's the song:

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kugel songs, recipes, and information From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 24 Nov 09 - 04:16 PM Hmmm. In Milwaukee where I grew up, kugel was made from noodles, mild cheese or sour cream and a little sugar. You cooked the noodles, mixed in the diary products and sugar, and baked it. (I confess I never cared for it.) Sorry, I never heard any songs that mention it. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kugel songs, recipes, and information From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Nov 09 - 04:33 PM Kugel is 'ball' in German, and refers to balls of noodle dough encased around something or other. This recipe sounds pretty good, I think I will try it. Fruit noodle pareve 8 oz. (250g) wide egg noodles 3-4 eggs 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 1/2 cup Canned fruit pieces, well-drained. 1/2 cup margarine 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 cup or more cornflakes Boil noodles al dente. Drain and rinse with cold water. Add beaten eggs, sugar, cinnamon, and fruit. Place in mediun-sized casserole dish' Crush cornflakes and sprinkle evenly over kugel Bake, uncovered, for 1+ hours at 350 F. I will use butter rather than margarine, and sprinkle with crushed shortbread (cornflakes-ugh!). We get a lot of fruit year-round now, so I will use it rather than the canned stuff. This may make it non-kosher, but I am not Jewish. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kugel songs, recipes, and information From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Nov 09 - 09:01 PM All the kugele I've had were pretty bland. I was raised on Kraft macaroni and cheese, and Kraft tasted a whole lot better than the kugele I've had as an adult. But the Wikipedia Article makes it sound like kugele are absolutely delicious. Hmmmm. I wonder how many packages of Kraft macaroni and cheese my parents used to feed a family with five kids. Maybe they served Kraft only on the nights they went out to eat. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kugel songs, recipes, and information From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 24 Nov 09 - 10:30 PM If there's a song about kugel, it might be on Shelley Posen's CD, Manna: MANNA A tsimmes of Shelley originals, funny and sad, about Jewish food, family and festivals. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll run to the fridge. Are kugel at all like varnitshkes? There's a trad Yiddish song about those. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kugel songs, recipes, and information From: GUEST,Guest, LL Date: 23 Oct 10 - 09:27 PM I don't know about songs mentioning kugel. I grew up eating kugel, but it it not macaroni and cheese, my german (jewish) grandmother made it. It was a large round hard 'dumpling' that went in the soup and she sliced it up and everyone got a slice in the bowl of soup. By the was it was good! I wish I had the recipe! |
