There are two songs the guys on the ORca sing that night in the movie "Jaws".

One starts out, "Farewell and adieu to you fair Spainish Ladies..."

The one I'm looking for starts out, "Show me the way to go home, I'm tired and I wanna go to bed. I had a little drink about an hour ago, and it got right to my head..."

Anyone know these?

Thanks in advance,

Choeh,

This song is listed as a "Camp Song" without attribution on several sites, for example here.

Just to put the words together,

THE WAY HOME

Show me the way to go home,
I'm tired and I want to go to bed.
I had a little drink about an hour ago,
And it went right to my head.
No matter where I roam,
Over land or sea or foam,
You will always hear me singing this song,
Show me the way to go home.

To hear part of the song direct from "Jaws" click here.

I would have let Joe Offer answer this one (he's a camp song expert), but he is a whaling on the deep ocean. Hope the sharks don't get him.

First one sounds like one of about 3 or 4 million variations on 'Yankee Whalemen'. It's a classic shanty... try searching for 'rant and roar' in the DB - I saw about 20-30 variants in the 'cat alone...

At camp we always used to sing it:

Direct me the way to my residence,
I'm fatigued and I wish to retire.
I took some stimulation sixty minutes ago,
And it went straight to my cerebellum.

Wherever I may perambulate,
Over lattitude, longitude, or altitude (?), You can always hear me entoning this melody,
Direct me the way to my abode.

As to the other song... don't get too confused in the DB... it's under 'Spanish Ladies', 'We'll rant and we'll roar', 'Yankee Whalemen', and also variations for:

Mining Railway workers Generic Sailors and (I may be reaching on this one) Every Other Profession excepting Venezualan Amputee Trappers.

No, seriously... It's one of the most overdone shanties I know of... Even beats out 'South Australia' and 'Irish Rover'...

There's an Aussie version of "Spanish Ladies". I only know the chorus:

We'll rant and we'll roar like true Queensland drovers,
We'll rant and we'll roar as onwards we push,
Until we get back to the Oggatella[?] Station,
For it's flaming hard going throught the old Queensland bush.

Hi Steve,

The Aussie version is either known as "Augathella station", or "Brisbane ladies" depending on who you ask.

The exact version that Robert Shaw sings in Jaws is the 1880-ish version of Spanish Ladies. In that version, you replace "Old England" with "Boston."

As for the refrain, it varies a lot, but usually starts with:

We'll rant and we'll roar Like true New England Whalermen..

Hope this helps

Spanish Ladies, Rant & Roar, Yankee Whaler Men, all the same tune Spanish ladies the lyrics are quite a bit different than the ones for Rant & Roar (Newfoundland version) or Yankee Whalermen (New England version) for those two you swap place names and landmarks. (Toslo/New Bedford etc...)Spanish Ladies has a bit more of a narrative to it while the other versions are more like an E harmony profile! "I'm the son of a sea cook I'm a cook and a trader, I can dance I can Sing I can reefs the main boom, I can handle a jigger I cuts a fine figure when ere I gets in a Boat's standing Room .... seeks a shorebound lassie with similar interests." And just to beat General Taylor's long dead horse it is without any question beyond a shadow of a doubt and without fear of contradiction NOT a shanty. It does not have the call and response format. (That oughta get 'em going! ;P)

Guest Frodo:

Local variant (S.Wales) is

Indicate the way to my habitual abode
I'm weary and desirous of repose.
For I had a little liqour sixty minutes ago
And it's perambulated to my cerebellum
No matter where I meander to and fro
Over land or sea or effervescent liquid
You will always hear me crooning this melody
Indicate the way to my abode.

The "Show Me The Way To Go Home" part that was sung in "Jaws" and that most people sing today is actually the chorus to a song that has several verses.

Anyone know the lyrics to the verses?

"Show me the way to go home" is often combined with a number of other short songs, such as
I want a beer just like the beer that pickled dear old Dad.
It was a beer and the only beer that Daddy ever had.
A good old fashioned beer with lots of foam,
It took ten men to carry Daddy home!
Oh, I want a beer just like the beer that pickled dear old Dad!
And
They had to carry Harry to the ferry;
They had to carry Harry to the shore.
The reason that they had
To carry Harry to the ferry
Was that Harry couldn't carry any more!

I've seen Jaws and here is 2 songs that was sung. Anyone that knows anymore let me know. Note Quint changed Old England to Boston

Spanish Ladies

Farewell and adieu to you, Spanish ladies,
Farewell and adieu to you, ladies of Spain;
For we have received orders to sail to old England,
But we hope in a short time to see you again.

Chorus:
We'll rant and we'll roar like true English sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all on the salt seas;
Until we strike soundings in the Channel of old England:
From Ushant to Scilly 'tis thirty-five leagues.

We hove our ship to, with the wind at sou'-west, boys,
We hove our ship to, deep soundings to take;
T'was forty-five fathoms with a white sandy bottom
So we squared our main yard and up channel did make (Chorus)

Now let every man drink up his full bumper,
Let every man drink up his full glass;
We'll drink and be jolly and drown melancholy,
And here's to the health of each true-hearted lass (Chorus)

Show me the way of go home

Show me the way to go home
I'm tired and I want to go to bed
I had a little drink about an hour ago
And it went right to my head
Where ever I may roam
On land or sea or foam
You will always hear me singing this song
Show me the way to go home

Indicate the way to my abode
I'm fatigued and I want to retire
I had a spot of beverage sixty minutes ago
And it went right to my cerebellum
Where ever I may perambulate
On land, or sea or atmospheric vapor
You can always hear me crooning the melody
Indicate the way to my abode

I wasn't sure if people mentioned the songs that was sung on Jaws. I checked and didn't find out it was until I posted. I'm sure there was another song sung on the film.
