The old Benington sing is now at Rose and Crown, Aston on the third Wednesday which is tomorrow.

The Great Eastern Hertford is the third Thursday, the day after tomorrow, as ever (even though I forgot last month.)

I am very sorry to have to report the passing of Dave Smith, who died on Sunday, aged 87. Those of you who have pre Sun memories of Hitchin Folk Club will remember David as the gentle, ruddy faced man who sat at the door and took the money. He had helped out at the Talisman from when Maureen took over, calling in at the club room on his way home from Church to put the chairs out, ready for the evening. He also helped run the Stevenage Folk Club for many years. He was a lovely man and we will miss him.

Morning all.

Tonight is The Plough, Ley Green. All welcome.

Perhaps more importantly, our mate Kenny, who has been a supporter of The Plough session since the very first soiree, is leaving us and going back to Scotland.

Kenny is an obsessive folkie, and a great man for tradition. He is a rabid champion of Scottishness, and a great character. We're really going to miss him.

This coming Saturday 22nd Feb we're having a wee going-away party for him at The Plough. If any acoustic/folkie types fancy joining us on Saturday to see him off we'd be very grateful.

My fallback position will be MP3s of Scottish music... Not really ideal!

Electric & acoustic session/jam/open-mic this evening at THE PLOUGH, Ley Green.

All welcome. Don't let the electric aspect put you off, that's just for a bit of textural variation and is kept at acoustic-friendly volumes.

This coming Tuesday is The Ploughmen's evening, so no acoustic session until the following Tues.

The Barton group meet on Wednesday 11th December at The Waggon & Horses, starting at 8.30 pm as usual. As it's our last night before Christmas some of you may feel like singing or playing carols although this is by no means obligatory!

It would be good to see you all, but if you can't make it on the 11th please note that the next session will be on Wednesday 8th January 2014.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Mark the Sparrow has had the confounded nerve to go on holiday (lazy little bastard) and I believe that at least one other core perpetrator is indisposed, so we may struggle to achieve an entertaining quorum tonight.

So, if anyone should find themselves at a loose end, please feel free to drop in. There should be plenty of turns available for anyone whose ego is up to the challenge.

Cowabunga, dudes.

This evening is the appalling shambles and insult to good taste that is THE PLOUGH, Ley Green acoustic session.

Situated between Luton and Hitchin, The Plough enjoys stunning views out over woods and farmland (which you'll have no chance of seeing because it'll be dark).

Oh, and when I was in at the weekend Colin had Doombar on. I'm hoping that my piss-head next-door neighbour hasn't drunk it all.

OMFG, as I believe the kids would say.

What the hell are you people doing to me? I'm sitting in my office, barely able to focus on the laptop screen. So far everything that has been said to me has had to be repeated a number of times and judging by the looks I'm getting, my responses aren't making much sense. Someone asked me something about drugs earlier.

Last night at The Plough... Something happened. I try to recall details but... well, you knnow that thing where one's mind blocks out traumatic episodes? Well, that.

Barknuckle Graham sent me a text this morning estimating more than 20 players plus another 5 or so who couldn't find the room to participate. I vaguely remember DADGAD John and meself trying to tally it up at the end of the evening, but kind of entering a state of increasing uncertainty. I know some sessions get more than that, but probably not many of them are crammed into such a small pub quite so far from civilisation.

The shambles charged on, relentlessly until... I don't know, 1am? 1.30?

We basically had another pitch invasion from Dunstable/Totternhoe. A huge, mob (basically a mobile birthday party for Weak Bladder Boy Simon the Cello).

There was cake. I remember cake. I don't think I ate any, but I remember treading on some.

With the most ginormous apologies to all, I'm not even going to attempt a full listing of perpetrators. If anyone who was present would care to provide that information I'd be grateful. To be honest I'm not sure which of the people I remember being there were actually there last night and which are fragments of memory from previous sessions.

Please excuse me now. I don't feel very well.

From Colin, Mary and meself, thank you so much to every last one of you mad bastards. We love you all.

And a very, very happy birthday to Simon. Cheers, dude!

BEDFORD FOLK CLUB – Notes on a meeting on 15th August 2013.

We turned up in force again to celebrate the Bedford Folk Club and Home for the Bewildered's latest edition of Kempston's Got Talent to several revelations.

According to the Clubmeister we are going to be on television (not so much Transatlantic Sessions as Transit Van) and after a barrage of Medical Tests and scans, Mike B is apparently to be delivered of a baby boy in the Autumn. Shock news indeed as most of us have never been on television.

Anyway.

The old chap was in fine form having recently restrung his guitar and still being able to fit it on his lap. He started off with "Jack Ashton" but before he got halfway through the first chorus departed, guitar in hand, to the bar to remonstrate with some young hussies who were getting over-excited. Then he returned and continued to sing with us, all suitably cowed into submission at this fine display of machismo. He also gave us contributions from Carole King and Loudon W the 3 before a sublime rendition of Wee Ralphie's beautiful "Nana's Song" or Streets of Paris as it will become known.

I on the other hand was hell-bent on frivolity and displaying my musical virtuosity with guitar, bouzar (I have a new toy) and tin sandwich. Musicality won on penalties and I retired hurt under the ICC's new "no runners" rule. (There was I thinking it was a Guitouki – Sub-Ed).

David (no longer from Barton) had some good songs as usual, including one about a woman who removed her wooden leg and used it as a fiddle (I think). I'm not absolutely sure as things were beginning to get blurry by then and David had been subject to a severe geographical telling-off by the lovely Ann M, of whom more later.

Chris gave us two meteorological poems – "Wind" and "A Rainy Day" – one of which was by Longfellow but I'm not sure which; and newcomer and Scout Master Angus delighted us with an archetypal British folk song (bawdy and funny) called "The Old Bachelor". Great stuff.

Charles' death count was very low indeed with only one person croaking and that before the song started. He did have a nice song called "Nowt about Owt" which had more euphemisms than Kenneth Williams in his heyday.

There followed a discussion of Kenneth W's Carry On catchphrases with Maggie giving an absolutely perfect impersonation of him, but I digress.

And so on to Ann M and daughter Omega. Breathtaking harmonies after Ann got the key from what looked like a portable sphygmomanometer. I honestly could have listened to their voices all night. It was quite beautiful - especially Cole Porter's "Every time we say goodbye" which was as good as Ella's in my opinion. (Couldn't agree more – totally sublime – Sub-Ed).

A first-half George-less Maggie and Roy did a lovely rendition of "Caledonia" before being joined by the aforementioned hirsute person to give a couple of songs the Still Seeking stamp of approval. Maggie really got into "The Carnival is Over". It was fun to watch as well as hear.

Bad Boy NotBeardyManAnyMore Karl had John Denver's "Eclipse" and "The Baltimore Fire" for us, before presenting us with a song that everyone but I knew. Can't remember what it was called or who it was by. ("Barratts Privateers" by the brilliant Stan Rogers – Sub-Ed).

After a visit by Rob (back from foreign parts) with, among other songs, Ray Davis' wonderful "Sunny Afternoon", we all steeled ourselves for an assault from Calvert who had crept in without anyone noticing. He gave us "Song sung Blue" very nicely.

Then as a climax to the evening we all joined in with the Great Sam (fresh from thrashing Russia on his own) on "When Joneses Ale was new" and "The Mountains of Mourne".

All in all a great way to spend a few hours on a Thursday evening. We'll do it again next week and it would be even better if you were there too.
