Subject: RE: What's On in Herts/Beds, UK; Permathread From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 20 Jun 09 - 01:46 PM REPORT REPORT - Gt Eastern. 18th June Warn the landlord Keith, I'm bringing a load of Tottie.... you know the sort.. hungry, thirsty, boisterous hecklers, looking for a good time. We thought John was joking, until the coach arrived. Where do you find them John? So well dressed. So pissed. When John did his famous "Do You Want To Dance?" the answer turned out to be a very definite "YES" It had been a fairly quiet night till then with regulars Tony, Collin and Alan all missing, but to compensate we had the fine singing and playing of Steve, who we all really hope will become a regular. Fine performances as ever from regular regulars, Rick, Chris, Martin, Eilish, Pete, Blues Harp player what is his name again please? Come back soon please. (Well, not till the 16th, unless you make it to Benington next Tuesday) keith. |

Globe of wonder and joy REPORT REPORT REPORT - 28th July 2009 After last weeks folk-heavy cracking session featuring the wonderful tones of Cathy and some fantastic accordion polkas as well as Steve B on autoharp the usual high standard continued last night! Foxy John was warming up for his stadium tour this eve with Do You Wanna Dance and other DADGAD delights, Stevie B was this week mostly playing the banjo and some fine appalacian tunes were had as well as a raucous Wild Rover! Brandishing a stunning '51 custom Gibson (be still my beating heart) we had some fine Djangology from the mighty Djim (see what i did there!) and singing along aplenty from the assembled masses. The man, the legend, Dennis squeezeboxed us into submission with medleys and Morris tunes (complete with leg bells!!!!) Next up was Racy Stacey with some lovely songs and a rousing Jolene with me as captive guitarist, then it was my turn where i invoked the spirit of John Barleycorn and upped the death count by 7 with some self-penned, chap from the rowdy audience who's name i didn't catch did The Gambler and vowed to return. Team Blues was fronted by Joe who was on excellent form as ever, even slowing it down with a Waylon Jennings number, then back round to Rick and his mississippi goddamn and slide yee-ha geetar. a fine evening once more, we'll have to top it next week folks...come one come all Tuesdays from 9pm The Globe, Winfield Street, Dunstable. no excuses! oooooooooh I don't think so. The room was a-buzz with rumours that Ross was a-coming. He delighted peeps with his amusing M1 song, gave an unforgettable rendition of a folkie song that I can't remember the title of and then teased everyone with an a capella Nelson's Blood Ross-style until someone bought him a drink. And wagon wheeled along too.
A great evening.

Subject: RE: What's On in Herts/Beds, UK; Permathread From: JohnDun Date: 07 Aug 09 - 07:14 PM REPORT REPORT REPORT Old Farm Inn Monday 03 Aug 09 Darts team at home this week, and I was a little late so I heard the singing from the car park as I arrived, but it didn't prepare me for the party atmosphere that was to come. One or two of our regulars are away on hols but then we had half a dozen new faces who came along to listen and sing. Hughie 'Dirty' Dolan was on fine form and had oiled his fingers with enough ale to amaze us by playing all night up to a fine 2:00am rendition of Rosin the Beau. Chris-the-hat eventually made it back to sing several requests and duets with Anna/Sally and anybody else in a skirt. Our own Cathy from Dunstable delighted us with Kate Rusby ballads and brought a session virgin who left quite late with his tacklintact asking do we know of any sessions in Leeds??? (anybody??) UDLH John, Harry, Ellie, James, Sally, Anna, OEJ, myself and some blurred faces I seem to remember(sorry) played our hearts out with chorus songs a plenty. BUT star of the night for me was Mr Alan Brown who not only brought his Mum, wife and a couple of friends along dazzled us with both his songs and joined in on Kazoos for Waggon Wheel and San Fransisco Bay Blues. Another excellent night at the OFI and we all wandered home leaving Martin the landlord to cash up the till with a smile. ;0) |

I had to be there just to find out what Steve Beaven was going to play this week, so far we've had Ukelele, Squeezebox, mandolin, autoharp, banjo, Oud, and this week..... Steel Drum !! what next??? So from trad folk with steel drum accomp.. tight canal shanty harmonies... modern americana... trad unaccomp. singing... boxed medleys... self penned and john barleycorn... 60's memories.. chorus songs, parodies, fiddle tunes, ballads, jazzier ballads to fingerlickin blues.. we rocked!! And pinching the blues lyric 'and the usual crowd was there' there was Cathie, Ash, Stacey, Stiffy, Terry, Dennis, Rick, UDLH John, Tottie-on-tour (OEJ, Sally, Simon, me) the two morris men singing in harmony(Was it Brian & John), Two globe virgins... one chap who's name I didn't catch(sorry) with a martin guitar and partner and John from Clophill who e-mailed me afterwards with the following comment. Great night. Great company. Great beer. Great singing. Great playing What more could one wish for. EXACTLY!! ;0) |

The Globe was it's usual unpredicatable and delightful mix of the old, the new, the folk, the blues, the happy, the sad and lashings and lashings of Mo's finest ale!!! Twas indeed a baritone uke, and to fine use he put it too!! We did indeed miss you Foxy as for a while i was the only guitar (G! A! Little old me did some self penned and upped the death count, providing the Samaritans with many more anguished callers no doubt! Stacey was lovely as ever and sang with me as her captive guitarist, RIck rolled up and gave us diddy wah diddy and a portion of the ole Candyman and gypsy jazz Djim Djangoed us rotten with an awesome Nagasaki before our song-smith heroes of the night John and Charlie did some excellent chorus songs ( beware wenches with string around their fingers in Yarmouth town....15 sailors, i do declare!!). Charlie did a wonderful side-show/ circus tune that had us rolling in the aisles! Subject: RE: What's On in Herts/Beds, UK; Permathread From: JohnDun Date: 24 Aug 09 - 09:41 AM Nice little session at Wing... Several instruments fiddles, mandolins, banjo, guitars, flute etc. plus Steve on a tastfully set electric bass just to give it all some lift. 50/50 mix of tunes and songs in an all 'joiny-inny' way of playing. (Playing in obscure keys keeps them quiet for a short while). Musicians fill about half the lounge bar of pub, can be a little 'chatty'. Excellent ales and usually finishes on time 11:00-11:30. --- Enjoy!! |

All in all a thoroughly good evening! |

Subject: RE: What's On in Herts/Beds, UK; Permathread From: Hamish Date: 02 Sep 09 - 06:01 AM Belated report from The Queen's Head the other week (18th August). It was fab. There: are you happy now, Ross? Thanks Hamish - RS Okay, okay, I'll add a little more. Slightly quieter than usual what with it being in the thick of holiday season, but we still had eleven quality performers. In some ways the reduced numbers was good, cos it whipped round pretty fast and we got loads of turns each. The pub was busy, too, and the locals were most appreciative. One of them even did the first two verses of The Leaving of Liverpool for us,and he was pretty good. Landlady requested Meet Me on the Corner. All in all a grand night. Mostly "the usual suspects" we were very pleased to have been graced by Karen who is after Elaine's job as "pretty girl playing flute". See, Elaine, that's what happens when you go swanning off round the Baltic!. |

Subject: RE: What's On in Herts/Beds, UK; Permathread From: Flashmeister Date: 04 Nov 09 - 09:30 AM It's been a while folks but I fancied doing a little..... REPORT REPORT REPORT! The Globe, Dunstable 3/11/2009 Well in the run up to Guy Fawkes night we certainly had some musical fireworks and instrumental pyrotchnics last night at Chateau Globe! Thankfully there was no chap in the cellar trying to blow us up but there was pleanty of fine ale and a great feeling in the room. The ragged band of conspirators was made up of that wily silver fox John Dun who did his usual DADGAD loveliness (and had had a little old lady fan-club outside the door behind me!!) Rick and his Cocaine Blues howled at the silvery moon, Django Jim blew us all away with some gypsy jazz and gypsied up country on his uber-sexy 1951 Gibson (phwwooaaar!)his rhythm section was UDLH John who doubled us a Travelling man too and Bob who did jazz brush beats on bodhran! Terry stood up and delighted us dressed in Flowers and Lace awaiting a train that never came (commence death count!) SaggyDiamond did some lovely unaccompanied songs, even with a serande to our JohnDun in one too, and was lacking her human music stand who was absent as Saggy broke her knee-caps of for dropping her lyric sheets - or so I heard on the grapevine :-D We had a Harry and friend (name?) who bluesed it up with a little Red Rooster complete with harp solos, Squeezebox couple (names again please!) did a lovely Spancil and joined in on backing too. Dennis was on form with his medley of doom complete with twist and turns aplenty which we all joined in (G! D! A!) Steve B complete with concertina was the Handsome Cabin Boy - in drag and Geoff played some great sing along tunes for us too. Stiffy and his frost-bitten knees did Springhill Mining Disatster (death count 200+!) and a Dick Gaughan Worker's Song and I did my Thai Bride Song and a slave sorrow song from Amerikay, Lay This Body Down, achieving a death count of 2.2 million in one go! phew! We all rounded off with a great jazzed up Wonderful World and howled our way throuh last orders and beyond until we were ejected by Mo and her pepper spray wielding bar heavies (or was it just the barmaids and some Mr.Muscle?!?)to wobble our collective way home in anticipation of next weeks Globe-tastic session. Come one, come all - The Globe 9pm onwards, Winfield St. Dunstable....you know you want to! we are also on facebook now too - look for Globe Acoustic Sessions - I'll find the link a bit later ;-) |

Subject: RE: What's On in Herts/Beds, UK; Permathread From: banksie Date: 06 Nov 09 - 12:44 PM As for the NAF Christmas thing on December 5th, it is a Charity event, raising funds for the Primrose Unit at Bedford Hospital. This specialises in helping post-op breast cancer patients as they go through the rigours of chemo etc and is largely charity-funded. Tickets cost 7.50 and there will be a bar and some food (of the grazing/finger-picking variety). As well as Ragged Staff, several other performers from the NAF club will be on hand, including young Leon (only 16 and a real `find'). We are also expecting an appearance from a folky-rocky band, October Game, and an appearance of Irish pipers John Devine (who teaches piping in St Albans) and James O'Grady (an all-Ireland champion who has recently stopped touring with Cara Dillon). He's also a demon fiddler, damn him :-). They may be bringing some extra musicians with them as well. They'll be a raffle as well (with at least one, probably two, bottles of excellent single malt whisky). PM me if you would like to order tickets. |

REPORT REPORT REPORT! The Globe, Winfield Street, Dunstable Tues 10/11/2009 It was cold and bitter night as the brave troubadours wended their way to The Globe this week ready to pack the room for another fantastic session. It was all, duets, surprise performances, songs of war and Team Jazz in the acsendant this week with some fine performances from all. The company of players were Terry with an awesome rendition of Kipling's 'If' on guitar, he was followed by Geoff who dissected Tony's Heart, a contemporary Chris TT song, followed by Rick and his own brand of Southern finger picking. Team Jazz was headed up by the man, the legend Jim Douglas or 'Django Djim' who delighted us with a fantastic Girl From Ipanema skittering down thos jazz chord progressions like he had boneless fingers, ably abetted by UDLH John who also had us all rocking in upside down left handed style with Hendrix's Hey Joe, thankfully no-one shot their woman down! Young Harry commanded his 'band' of Rick, Djim, John and Bob on bodhran for a cracking Hotel California which we all joined in with on choruses. Next up was Steve B who not only came equipped with guitar but also his violinist daughter and a massive sousaphone!! They did some awesome instrumental duets and set the bar high for Team Folk! The war songs were started in fine style by (I thinks it's Richard!) who did The Green fields of France and had us all on the chorus, he then doubled up with Dennis to do a great fiddle and squeezebox medley of foot tapping Morris tunes. A great first time performance was given by Malcolm who did a rousing unaccompanied Black Leg Miners. Stiffy teased us, starting off with one song that eventually morphed into a lovely self penned 'Thursday Evening' and I did my Phil Spector number as well as a jazz duet with Djim of Melancholy Baby in Ab(!) a real pleasure to sing with someone as good as Djim and not a death count in sight!! Rachel came out from the spectators to do Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and Simon was in fine voice accompanying Dennis for Black Velvet Band. Chris rounded proceedings off in rip-roaring style with the Banks of Australia and then, with the Armistice day feeling in the air he did chilling and sombre version of Eric Bogle's And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda followed by me reading James Michie's 1927 poem Dooley is a Traitor. All was rounded of in beautiful style by John doing a haunting, soft Metallica instrumental on guitar - And so the curtain fell on another wonderful Globe session. Roll on next week, Hope to see some new and long-time-no-see faces down there to give us all a run for our money! :-D |

REPORT REPORT REPORT - Three Horseshoes, Winkwell - 29th November by Ross
Derek led us off with lots of singalongs and whistley bits; Jonathan gave us a few tunes on fiddle & sang us some songs (very operatic & a little bit methodist); Clive from Chesham gave us a classic class in folk/guitar dropped D (and other strings) sing/song, Sue gave us some lovely (beautiful even) tunes & songs; Ian had a lovely jumper with his name & circus tent on it; Mr Martin Dent sang his heart out (last seen on the A41), whilst Jan danced (exotically around a post); Ian's friend sang us some classics including Stand By Me & Under the Boardwalk, Hamish made sure we all joined in with lots of joininables and that one about Dundee cake; and lastly Cathy charmed our underpants off with songs of love, joy and clock winding; I was there and sold 4,392,949 home made Christmas cards depicting Obama teaching Tiger to drive (or was it the other way around)
The home made fire crackled and reindeer could be heard swimming down the canal
I think there is one on the 27th December - watch this space?!!! |

Subject: RE: What's On in Herts/Beds, UK; Permathread From: Nick_ Date: 30 Nov 09 - 09:51 AM I'm going to be in Luton on Thursday. Any recommendations for a singaround or session to go to? Last time I was down I went to the Globe in Dunstable which I enjoyed. Are any of the Thursday things listed above similar?
Hi Nick I hear the Globe in Luton is good and Owen is always full of fun |

Subject: RE: What's On in Herts/Beds, UK; Permathread From: JohnDun Date: 30 Nov 09 - 03:22 PM Hi Nick I remember you and your good lady at the Globe last time you came down. Out of the Thursday venues above (1st Thurs) Redbourn this week is a singers night. I haven't been for a while but it always had very able performers who would stand up in front of everybody and do a few pieces, contact Jan Strapp on the link for more info. The Globe in LUTON - not Dunstable is a cosy little pub in Luton town centre (walking distance?) they normally have 5-6 players of varying ability and it goes around the bar similar to the other Globe although it isn't in a seperate bar area, and the bar is usually quiet enough not to disturb any performances.(more contemporary than trad.) Croxley green is a singaround session with a good mix of musical styles and variety of instruments (easy to find, just off M25 J17). Little Gransden is a little country pub with its own micro-brewery lovely joiny-inny session with a variety of blowers, fiddlers and strings (incl. stand up Double bass last time I was there)- a bit of a drive though. Alternatively.... I could have a word with the boys and girls and put on an impromptu session at the Old Farm Inn on Thursday night in your honour. Ross may know of others if you pm him. Let me know.... Regards John |

I'm very happy to go anywhere in the area really. The Luton and Croxley Green ones are looking favourites at present unless the thing at the Old Farm Inn was a goer. Croxley is a bit of a distance but some of the others (like Little Gransden) are a bit of a trek as I don't know the area NIck |
