SHIP AHOY (ALL THE NICE GIRLS LOVE A SAILOR)
Words, A J Mills. Music, Bennett Scott (1909)

When the man o' war or merchant ship comes sailing into port,
The jolly tar with joy, will sing out, "Land ahoy!"
With his pockets full of money and a parrot in a cage,
He smiles at all the pretty girls upon the landing stage.

CHORUS: All the nice girls love a sailor.
All the nice girls love a tar,
For there's something about a sailor.
Well you know what sailors are!
Bright and breezy, free and easy,
He's the ladies' pride and joy!
Falls in love with Kate and Jane,
Then he's off to sea again,
Ship ahoy! Ship ahoy!

He will spend his money freely, and he's generous to his pals,
While Jack has got a sou, there's half of it for you,
And it's just the same in love or war, he goes through with a smile,
And you can trust a sailor, he's a white man all the while!

CHORUS

It's a weird little pop song which I've looked over a couple of times on various websites. However, I was never sure what to do with it. It's really such an innocent song. Any clue how well the tune works?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Many, if not most, people in Britain would be able to sing you the chorus of this music hall favourite, Charlie, but I don't recall ever hearing the verses.

And you might also hear the not-so-innocent rugby version "All the nice girls love a candle"

All the nice girls love a candle,
All the nice girls love a wick (love a wick),
'Cos there's something about a candle,
That reminds them of a dick (of a dick),
Nice and greasy,
Slips in easy,
It's the girlie's pride and joy,
When you're walking up the front,
With a candle up your c**t,
Ship ahoy boy, ship ahoy!

Also known as Kandel's Hora (MP3 if you're on 56k)... or should that be Whora's Kandel?

YouTube has a video of ALL THE NICE GIRLS LOVE A SAILOR sung by Fiona Harrison in 2009. It includes the first verse.

The sheet music can be seen at The National Library of Australia web site.

It reveals that the above version has a missing verse:

2. Jack is partial to the yellow girls across the eastern seas;
With lovely almond eyes the tar they hypnotise,
And when he goes to the Sandwich Isles* he loves the dusky belles
Dress'd up à la Salome, coloured beads and oyster shells.

[* Old name for Hawaii]
