Subject: Just A Dirty Old Man??
From: helenr@western.wave.ca
Date: 29 May 99 - 06:28 PM

A friend is looking for the words to the song above. He's not sure if this is the title, but some of the words are:
I'm old and tired and bent and busted
Gray and wrinkled, can't be trusted
    Just a dirty old man
    That's what I am.
If anyone knows the proper title and who recorded it,
I'd be happy to hear from them.

Cheers,

Helen

Hi Helen, I think you'll find that George Hamilton the fourth recorded it, and perhaps Tom T hall wrote it. I'd start looking for it in the "country music" field anyway. Good luck.

Helen, sorry to disagree with Rick but I believe it is a short on one of Harry Chapins recordings, one of many he used as antedotes during his performing. Ok, got it here. Harry Chapin: the gold medal collection; disc one, song 3. Hey, with this subject could be many so I am not telling Rick he is wrong. Tucker

Sounds like just the song for me--there I was at Quinn's Lighthouse, enjoyin' the company of the lovely 23 1/2 year old Sonja while my wife was sleeping in her car in front of the house, unable to unlock the front door (she had the key, and it's really quite easy, but she likes to think I plot against her--I really caught Hell that night, and I don't mean Wolfgang--even though that's Sonja's father's name). As for Sonja--well, I have a 32 year old unmarried son, very good looking, with a great job--and straight. I haven't managed to get them together yet... --seed

Tucker, I owe you a drink! There WAS a much older country song by that name, but I'd plumb forgotten the late Harry's one. He was a gem.

Click here for a very large collection of Harry Chapin lyrics, but not this song, which is identified as a spoken piece. Actually, he does sing one verse of the song, which he says he wrote in his "cool macho stud" period in the sixties, when he didn't sell any records:
I've had pretty women
In my day
Yeah, those long-haired beauties
Simply ran my way-ay
I treat 'em rotten
They just love me more
And when they gave me trouble, I just
Showed 'em the door
I'm a dirty old man.
And I don't give a damn.
-From the "Tonight Show," NBC, December 20, 1977-
Sounds like something Rick Fielding would sing, doesn't it????

The song is called "Dirty Old Man." I have the words and music for it at home which I copied it from a Canadian folk music book I borrowed from the local library several years ago. I'll try to post the lyrics and chords tomorrow. If I remember correctly, it was written by Bob Ruzika (Ruzicka?) who, I think, hails from Edmonton. The only recording of it I've ever heard was by John Allan Cameron, probably on his Weddings, Wakes and Other Things Album.

Don't think it is on that album (can check at home), 'cause I bought and loved it when that song would bring out my foam-at-the-mouth phase.

Sorry Joe, didn't get the joke. Considering that one of the few causes that I see as absolutely black and white is violence towards women, I doubt I'd ever sing a line like "I treat 'em rotten..."
Actually, I'm one of those philistines who'll change a line from a trad song if I find it insults women.

Well, Rick it does sound kind of rotten when you look at just the lyrics, come to think of it. Sorry 'bout that. Trust me, though, you'd laugh if you heard the song - it kind of sounds like Les Nessman of WKRP trying to sound tough. Remember old Les?

Helenr, you'll find the lyrics and chords below, and they should all line up if I got the line breaks right.

MAG, you might be right. I didn't check which of John Allan's albums include this song and made the comment from memory. I'll have a look when I go home tonight.

This is a good commentary on the tendency of many people to mistrust others who may look different ... in this case, older.

Bob

-------

DIRTY OLD MAN

Copyright: Bob Ruzicka

Spoken:
Well, an old man stood on the corner,
Watching young folks come his way;
And their smiling, youthful faces
Prompted that old man to say;
"How ya' doin' kids? You're lookin' good,
Sure is a hell of a day."
But they just stared and looked him up and down,
And walked upon their way.
Well, he shook his head
And ran his fingers through his hair so grey;
And as those kids walked down the street,
They heard that old man say:

1 Well I've [F] been around for eight summers
[Bb] Some were winners and some were bummers,
I've [F] loved them all. [Bb]
Once I [F] was young and full of fun, Like you had a mil-
[Bb] -lion dreams and some came true,
Ya can't [F] win 'em all.

Chorus:
Now I'm old [C] and tired, bent and busted.
I'm [Bb] grey and old and I can't be trusted,
Just a [F] dirty old man. [Bb] [F]

2 When I look back on my younger years
I shared your hopes, I shared your fears,
Yeah, I made that scene.
My parents never understood
And I never thought that they ever would
You know what I mean.

Chorus

3 Well I've done some livin' in this life of mine,
I laughed and I loved in the summertime
I remember it well.
There were lips to kiss and hands to hold
And I never thought that I'd get very old,
But here I am.

Chorus

4 But you just wait fifty years or so
You'll be standing on the corner with no place to go
Just looking around.
And if some young folks pass you by
Don't say hello, don't even wave "hi"
They'll just put you down.

Last chorus (sing twice)
Cause you're old and tired, bent and busted,
You're grey and old and you can't be trusted,
Just a dirty old man.

Ahahh, I was right Tucker! Now you can buy me a drink as well. George Hamilton the fourth recorded an album of Canadian songwriters' material in the 70s, and that was on it. I even sent him a tape of some songs and just found one of the politest rejection letters I've ever received. Written by George himself.
If anyone wants to know: Who the hell is this George the fourth guy? Or is he the actor? Nope. His 2 big hits were "A Rose and a Baby Ruth" and "Abilene".

I found out, much to my shame, that I was wrong in thinking this was the Suntan King actor who once dated Lynda Johnson (daughter of Lyndon). George Hamilton Fourth is a totally different animal, a musician of some note and integrity. As a gesture of repentance, allow me to offer this link (and, to make sure you know the difference, George Hamilton, actor and tan specialist).

Yes, Bob Ruzicka. Wasn't he The Singing Dentist? I think it was him who wrote the song about the man in Saskatoon who wished he had become a sailor. Once A Sailor? That the name?

The line is "old and tired, bent and busted, grey and wrinkled"

Eighty summers.

You're right, Tim. That line should read: "old and tired, bent and busted, grey and wrinkled" and the reference to eight summers should read "eighty summers." I am prone to making typos. Maybe someayd, I'l learn to typ.

Jeremiah, I have heard the Valdy version but had forgotten about it.

Unless you never heard Valdy do it, or never had any reason to associate it with Valdy, and only, for instance, heard it done by the late John Allen Cameron. In which case you might say, It's John Allen and only ever been John Allen.

An old man stood on the corner and watched some young folks come his way.
They had youthful smilin' faces, prompted that old man to say:
"Howdy, kids. How ya been doin'? Geez it sure is a hell of a day."
They just stared, looked him up and down and walked on along the way.
The old man shook his head, passed his fingers thru hair so gray.
As those kids walked down the street, I thought I heard the old man say:

Been around for 80 summers.
Some were winners and some were bummers.
I've loved 'em all.
Once I was young and full of fun like you.
I had a million dreams and some came true.
You can't win 'em all.

CHORUS: Now I'm old and tired, bent and busted,
Gray and wrinkled and I can't be trusted,
Just a dirty old man.

As I look back on the younger years,
You shared your hopes and you shared your fears.
Yes, I made that scene.
Parents never understood
And I guess that I felt that they never would.
Do you know what I mean?

Well, I've done some livin' in this life of mine.
I've laughed and loved in the summertime.
I remember it well.
Well, there was lips to kiss and hands to hold,
And I never thought I would get very old,
And look at here I am. Here I'm..... CHORUS

And you, you wait 50 years or so,
You'll be standing on the corner with no place to go,
Just a-lookin' around,
And some young folks'll pass you by,
Don't say hello, don't even wave hi,
They'll only put you down.

CHORUS
CHORUS
Look at me, just a dirty old man.

They are the lyrics done by Valdy. Whether they are also Ruzicka's composition I have no way of knowing. No attribution was given on that page.

Bob Ruzicka wrote the lyrics and music for Dirty Old Man. Valdy did a cover of it. Other songs of Bob's music that Valdy recorded were Yes I Can, Leavin' Ain't the Only Way To Go, and Double Solitaire.
Judy Collins recorded his Down and Losin', and Anne Murray recorded Hey Daddy ( Hippo in the Bathtub). He moved from Edmonton to Victoria in his late twenties and still enjoys living there.

More people might know the George Hamilton IV version because it hit No. 1 on the Canadian country chart in 1973 and also went to No. 2 adult contemporary.

I wish someone would post these songs with chords somewhere... They are so hard to find and I think people should still be singing them... Why is it some of these guys so cheap about posting lyrics and chords? If I wrote great songs, I would be glad if people still wanted to sing them after forty years. Sorry if I seem to be whining...but why should I have to figure out (and probably use the wrong chords) after ALGORE went to all the trouble of inventing the internet.
