Subject: LYR REQ: As we go rolling home From: Animaterra Date: 07 Jun 99 - 09:04 AM I think it's an English pub song. It refers to the ease and luxury of the rich, with lines like "while we poor weary laborers do plow the fields of corn...". It's not in the DT as far as I can tell! Thanks- this song has been waking me up at night! Allison Search for "rolling" threads |

Subject: Lyr Add: ROLLING HOME (John Tams)^^ From: The_one_and_only_Dai Date: 07 Jun 99 - 09:39 AM This was written by John Tams. Round goes the wheel of fortune, don't be afraid to ride, There's a land of milk and honey waits on the other side. There'll be peace and there'll be plenty, you'll never need to roam, When we go rolling home, when we go rolling home. ch: Rolling home, when we go rolling home, when we go rolling, rolling, when we go rolling home.
The gentry in their finery do prosper night and morn,

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: As we go rolling home From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 07 Jun 99 - 10:29 AM Gee, by the thread title I thought you were looking for an old Boy Scout song: I've got six pence, jolly, jolly six pence. I've got six pence to last me all my life. I've got two pence to lend and two pence to spend, And two pence to take home to my wife (poor wife). No cares have I to grieve me, No pretty little girls to deceive me. I'm as happy as a lark believe me. As we go rolling, rolling home. Rolling home (rolling home), Rolling home (rolling home), As we go rolling, rolling home. Happy as the day when a poor man gets his pay, As we go rolling, rolling home. It goes on with four pence, then two pence, and then no pence. Thanks for the memory! Roger in Baltimore |

Subject: Lyr Add: ROLLING HOME (John Tams)^^ From: Liz C. Date: 07 Jun 99 - 10:52 AM The missing bits: second half of 2nd verse: The rich may steal the power, but the glory's ours alone, When we go rolling home, when we go rolling home. Chorus The frost is on the hedgerow, the icy winds do blow, While we poor weary labourers strive through the driving snow Their dreams fly up to glory, up where the lark has flown When we go rolling home, when we go rolling home. Chorus The summer of resentment, the winter of despair, The journey to contentment is set with trap and snare Stand to and stand together, your labour's yours alone When you go rolling home, when you go rolling home. Chorus You've got the last verse from Dai. I could regret this but I'm going to rise to the bait and ask why girls shouldn't sing this song?^^ |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: As we go rolling home From: The_one_and_only_Dai Date: 07 Jun 99 - 11:00 AM Thanks Liz, you've saved me a lot of typing... There is, of course, no reason girls shouldn't sing this song. Neither is there a reason that guys shouldn't sing The Trees They Do Grow High, but personally I wouldn't... I've just always thought of this as a rollicking, rowdy, weekend-in-the-woods-discovering-your-power-animal kind of number, to be belted out in basso profundo while quaffing (yes, quaffing) Frog Island Owd Sole-Bender, belching and scratching. None of these activities can I easily reconcile with the ladies who attend our folky circle... no, really! |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: As we go rolling home From: Animaterra Date: 07 Jun 99 - 04:14 PM Thanks a million, Dai and Liz! The group I occasionally sing with does a rousing version of this whatever their gender. Two nights ago I literally leapt out of bed at 2 amwhen I heard this song roaring through my dreams at top volume- I took it as a sign that I should learn this song! I just finished explainging to a class of 4th graders why boys could too sing "When I was a fair maid" even though it doesn't apply to them- so I'm with Liz, I can too sing this song! Thanks again- Allison |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: As we go rolling home From: Herga Kitty Date: 06 Sep 01 - 08:29 PM I've learnt Rolling Home by osmosis - repeated renditions at Herga by Johnny Collins, Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman. This isn't just a drinking song but a deeply subversive and political one about the need for agricultural labourers to organise. By the way, Dai must frequent a very sedate folk club if he hasn't met women who quaff, or sing bass harmonies. He clearly wasn't at the Wareham Wail. |
