Having just returned from our delightful October whirlwind tour, Anne Price and I are talking about returning to the UK for two weeks during the month of May 2010. Once our plans are a little more firm, we will get in contact with the folks who hosted us last month. Meanwhile, if there are any other folk club organizers or house concert sponsors who would consider booking us, please get in touch with me by e-mail by clicking here. Anne and I would be happy to send you a press kit and a sample CD. We still have our Oyster Cards, our UK mobile phones, and a very small cache of £5 and £10 banknotes, and there's not much we can do with any of that stuff in the USA. Please help us out. Anne Price and I will be in the UK from May 7 to 18, plus or minus a day or two, and we will spend most of our time in and around the London area. We are already booked as featured guest performer at one club for Friday, May 14, and we are tentatively booked at another club for Sunday, May 16. We are just awaiting confirmation of that second booking. If there are any club organizers [Yank spelling!] or house concert hosts who would like to put us on for any of the other days, please contact me by e-mail right away. Here are our appearances so far: Sunday, May 9, 2010, 7:30 PM Walthamstow Folk Club Plough Inn 173 Wood Street Walthamstow, London Friday, May 14, 2010, 8:30 PM Orpington Friday Folk Liberal Club 7 Station Road Orpington, Kent Sunday, May 16, 2010, 2:30 PM FAB Club White Hart Pub Argent Street Grays, Essex Monday, May 17, 2010, 8:30 PM Waltham Abbey Folk Club Royal British Legion Brooker Road Waltham Abbey, Essex We plan to fill in our other dates with visits to other clubs, floor spots, dinner with my cousin Alisha, a night or two at the theatre, and perhaps a musical house party if LtS or someone is willing to organize it. Since one of my hobbies is postal history, I also plan to spend at least two or three days at the London 2010 International Philatelic Exhibition at the International Design Centre in Islington. One of my favorite [Yank spelling!] haunts is the Jackson Diner, one of the local Indian restaurants which features an all-you-can eat buffet luncheon for less than $10. And, yes, they often serve chicken tikka masala among their many other fine dishes. Was CTM created for the British palate? I don't know for certain, but like many dishes it was undoubtedly adjusted for both British and American clientele. And even with all the CTM available here in NYC, I still look forward to sampling the London variety. --- Steve |

Indian restaurants used to serve a dish called Murgh Massalam, pieces of chicken in a red tomato sauce with fragrant spices, notably cardamom. An essentially similar, though usually blander, dish has been given an anglicised name ( Murgh=chicken),had the irrelevant description 'Tikka added, and been heavily promoted. |

[among several other dishes] ... the chicken vindaloo, and please make it hot. Waiter: Do you want that Indian hot or American hot? Man-on-Date: Indian hot. Marilyn (to me): They're not going to like it. Marilyn was right. Woman-on-Date took one bite, spit it out, and gulped down a glass of water followed by some yoghurt and then more water. Man-on-Date, too proud to admit his error, suffered through the meal, finishing the chicken vindaloo himself while his companion ate only the milder foods. --- Steve |

Bubblyrat, The American branch of the family pronounces Suffet as suh-fit. The name is probably derived from or related to the Hebrew title Shofit, which was a judge or non-heriditary rule. The Phoenician equivalent is actually Suffet, and that's the title that both Hannibal and his father Hamilcar Barca held at various times. And indeed has a longstanding place in classic British food, heralding right back to the days of the old Empire. Think of Mulligatawny soup, Coronation Chicken, Kedgeree and even that quintessentially British cupboard staple Worcestershire Sauce! In fact I have simply the best vegetable Mulligatawny Soup recipe by food writer Elizabeth David, if you ever need to use up an allotment's worth of marrow.. I watched 'Britain's Best Dish' with great interest this year, especially for the amount of international cuisine that was showcased from home cooking enthusiasts, much of it was - again, as to be expected - drawn from what were once the old colonies with whom these Isles have a longstanding connection historically & culturally. |

In addition to our performance on May 17, we hope to pay a call on Herga Folk Club for singer's night on May 10. Please see earlier exchanges with Kitty. We do hope to visit Sharps Folk Club at Cecil Sharp House on May 11, May 18, or perhaps both evenings. Anne and I each did floor spots there in October 2008, and I did the same in 1999 and 2006. In advance of our return, Marilyn (my wife; Anne is my singing partner) had the buffet lunch this afternoon at the Jackson Diner in Jackson Heights, Queens, one of New York City's best known Indian restaurants. During WW2, in 1945 I think, there was nearly a serious mutiny aboard the aircraft carrier HMS Formidable,part of the British Pacific Fleet. There were several "issues " for which the blame was attributed to the ship's (hugely unpopular) Captain,one of which involved the introduction of curry to the ship's daily menu---in those days,sailors collected their food from the Galley,and took it back to the mess-deck to dish out and eat. On their first encounter with a curry, many refused to eat it,one of them commenting that it looked like " a load of spew !" (vomit). However,with the passage of time,it has become slightly more popular !! |

It's one of those "an Englishman, an Scotsman, and an Irishman..." stories that goes on for God only knows how many verses. I couldn't find the right key, I could scarcely remember the tune, and I faked my way through more than half the lyrics, repeating one verse and omitting another. But did that stop me? Hell, no! Of course AT&T had been the service that both Anne Price and I had been using, so we had to scramble to find another provider. We chose one called Go Daddy, paid basic fee, and uploaded our files. For Anne that was the end of the story because she already had a URL with her own domain. It's www.anneprice.com and all she had to do were a few mouse clicks which some tech guy on the other end of the phone guided her through. I, on the other hand, had to register my domain name for the first time. Should I be business (.biz)? A network (.net?) A nonprofit organization (.org)? A Yank (.us)? A Brit (.uk)? Maybe even an Israeli (.il)? Choices, choices, choices! The only things I couldn't be are a government agency (.gov), a school (.edu), or a branch of the armed forces (.mil). It's blossom time for the apple orchards, of which England has a long established history along with the cider making industry. They can make a great place for a sunny spring ramble and a picnic lunch (given rights of way). Do try and get yourselves off for a wander through one of our lovely bluebell woods in May too. They should be out in full vigour by then. Not 'folk' related as such, but these two things are some of the delights of May in England for me :) |

There are six people in our party -- Anne, myself, our respective spouses, and another couple -- and among us we have nearly every minute accounted for. These include, among other things, MacBeth at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the new Darwin Centre at the Natural History Museum, the London 2010 International Stamp Exhibition, the National Maritime Museum, the Jewish Museum, and dinner with my cousin Alisha. And that doesn't include all the folk music related events. Yes, we will split up for some of the activities, but these are more than enough to occupy all our time. But thank you for the suggestion. With a little good luck we will make it to the train on time. If we miss the last train we will take the night bus. Of course, if you have a club member who is driving back to London and who has room, we will gladly hitch a ride. Or bags are all packed, and so are our instruments. If all goes well as it has in the past, American Airlines will let us board early and lock our guitars into the crew's bunk room. Otherwise, we will hand them over to the agent as we board to be gate checked. Even though they are in heavily padded hard cases, we do not want to risk putting them onto the conveyor belts. --- Steve |

Last night we were at Orpington Friday Folk, and the warm and friendly reception was quite extraordinary. To cap a perfect evening, we got a ride to the rail station just in time to catch a fast train back to London Charring Cross, so we were in our hotel rooms in under an hour. That is also quite extraordinary. Thanks so far to Kevin Shields and Russ Chandler at Walthamstow Folk, to Sue Tuckey and Trevor Little at OFF, and to everyone else who has made this tour possible. We are off to the Black Lion in a few hours for tonight's pub session arranged by Liz te Squeak, and we hope to see many more of our Mudcat friends there. Also, please come say hello when we appear at the FAB Club in Grays tomorrow afternoon and at Waltham Abbey Folk Club on Monday evening. --- Steve |

Yes, it was great to meet Breezy and to say hello to Kitty once again, and to George Clarke as well.
