Subject: Thought for the Day (June 23) From: Peter T. Date: 23 Jun 99 - 09:17 AM "But often, in the world's most crowded streets, But often, in the din or strife, There rises an unspeakable desire After the knowledge of our own buried life.... And many a man in his own breast then delves, But deep enough, alas!none ever mines. And we have been on many thousand lines, And we have shown, on each, spirit and power: But hardly have we, for one little hour, Been on our own line, have we been ourselves. --Matthew Arnold, "The Buried Life" |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (June 23) From: Allan C. Date: 23 Jun 99 - 09:29 AM At no other time in my life do I feel more in touch with my real self than when I am alone with my guitar. The tunes and the songs I choose to sing come from my soul. I have no cares about how good or bad it all may sound to anyone else. The music both empties and fills my soul at the same time. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (June 23) From: Neil Lowe Date: 23 Jun 99 - 10:07 AM Wonderful sentiments, Peter T and Allan. Was it Plato who spake, "The unexamined life is not worth living"? And then a cynic had to reply: "Yeah, and sometimes the examined life isn't all that hot either." Fear of the unknown is a hindrance to discovery. One has to be prepared for the possibility of finding things which may best be left buried. But where's the adventure in "familiar" things? Allan: "Everything in the universe is one note." - Frank Zappa Regards, Neil (as he prepares to duck the rotten fruits and vegetables flung at him for mentioning FZ in a Folk & Blues forum) |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (June 23) From: BeesWing Date: 23 Jun 99 - 10:30 AM Peter, how beautiful...thank you for taking the time to post that. What would this journey be without the hope of ever experiencing that 1 hour of "self" . The trick is accepting the self as we can best percieve it for the remainder. Blessed be. *S* |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (June 23) From: Date: 23 Jun 99 - 11:33 AM In a book called "The Art of Loving" (has nothing to do with sex), there is a section about loving yourself. I've momentarily forgotton the Author (old age), but he says that many people cannot stand being just with themselves. Instead, they'll always have the radio playing, or the TV, or something that takes them away from themselves. He suggests sitting in the dark, by yourself with nothing to distract you. Spend sometime with yourself. You can't allow your thoughts to take you away from your task of being just with you. I found it an interesing idea and from time to time I'll try it. It's not an easy thing to do. BTW, it's a wonderful book and I highly suggest reading it. In fact, I think I'll read it again. HAWD, Love annap |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (June 23) From: Allan C. Date: 23 Jun 99 - 12:47 PM Somewhere I recently heard a quotation which I will paraphrase here because my memory will not allow a true quote: Being bored means that one is tired of one's own company. |
