Subject: Lyr Add: I AIN'T A BIT DRUNK (George Roark)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 17 Feb 09 - 05:00 PM

George Roark's recording of I AIN'T A BIT DRUNK is on the various-artists 7-CD box set "Kentucky Mountain Music", Yazoo CD 2200, 2003. It was originally released on Columbia 15383, March 1929. You can hear the complete song at Honking Duck (or click to play). Here's how I hear it:

I AIN'T A BIT DRUNK

1. When she saw me comin', she wrung her hands and cried,
Said, "Yonder comes a booger man. Oh, where in the world am I Oh, where'll I run and hide?"

CHORUS: I ain't a bit drunk, drunk, drunk.
I ain't a bit drunk, drunk, drunk.
I ain't a bit drunk, drunk, drunk.
I'm just from Alabam'.
I ain't a bitó
I ain't a bitó
I ain't a bitó
I mean just what I say.

2. She hugged me and she kissed me. She called me sugar-plum,
Throwed both arms around me like vines around a gum.

3. She hugged me and she kissed me. She called me sugar-plum.
Throwed both arms around me. I thought my time had come.

4. Where'd you get your whisky? Where'd you get your dram?
I bought it from a yaller gal away in Alabam'.

5. She hugged me and she kissed me. She called me sugar-plum.
Throwed both arms around me. She said she loved me some.

I AIN'T A BIT DRUNK

When she saw me comin', she wrung her hands and cried,
Said, "Yonder comes a booger man. Oh, where in the world am I?"

    I ain't a bit drunk, drunk, drunk.
    I ain't a bit drunk, drunk, drunk.
    I ain't a bit drunk, drunk, drunk.
    I'm just from Alabam'.
    I ain't a bitó
    I ain't a bitó
    I ain't a bitó
I mean just what I say.

She hugged me and she kissed me. She called me sugar-plum,
Throwed both arms around me like vines around a gum.

She hugged me and she kissed me. She called me sugar-plum.
Throwed both arms around me. I thought my time had come.

Where'd you get your whisky? Where'd you get your dram?
I bought it from a yaller gal away in Alabam'.

She hugged me and she kissed me. She called me sugar-plum.
Throwed both arms around me. She said she loved me some.

I think the first verse ends with "oh where'll I run and hide".
The rest of Stewie's verion as spot on.

"Hey there, sheriff, why ya draggin' ole Rufus away?"

"Cause he was layin' there in the middle of the street, drunk in public!"

"Aww, hell, sheriff, he ain't drunk! I just seen his fingers move!"

There's an earlier thread on this song: Lyr Req: I Ain't a Bit Drunk (George Roark). Looks like Stew copied the lyrics from there.

By the way, I have listened again to the song at Honking Duck, and I now agree with BanjoRay's interpretation: "Oh, where'll I run and hide?" It makes more sense than "Oh, where in the world am I?" and it rhymes!

BanjoRay pointed out, in another thread, that the last half of verse 1 line 2 should be "Oh, where'll I run and hide?"

I've listened again to the song, and I agree.

Thanks for the correction; it makes more sense and it rhymes!
I combined the two threads so we have all the information on the song in the same place. -Joe Offer-

Can anyone help me with the chords on this. I've seen the Canote brothers do this and I think they do it in G. I'm a little dull-witted when it comes to music and finding the chord changes in a song. Any help would be appreciated.

I think the chord progression for the chorus goes    C   to Am not C to F

Just a thought
