I'm off to see the Unthanks tonight. Does anyone know who the support act are & whether they are worth turning up for ? (I tried calling the venue but all I got was computerised 'options'.)

If you are going to the Komedia Brighton tonight (monday), then the support is

Myspace Jonny Kearney and Lucy Farrell

However, with so much illness going around at the moment you can never tell.

I liked the support act, and they are well worth turning up for. Also a couple of the Unthanks join them for a number.

So how was the gig?

Outstanding.

Not one for the folk purists, I imagine, as the central core of folk songs has been widened out with extra instrumentation - strings, brass, piano even (the horror! the horror!) electric bass and a real-life drum kit. But to me, this only added extra tones & musical 'colours'. And they drew from other traditions too - some 'modern classical' here & there and the more 'baroque' end of pop - once or twice I was reminded of the Beach Boys - though the Unthanks aren't boys, of course (though some of their band are) and are hardly Californian.

And as for that support act I asked about above, they were pretty good too, with excellent male/female harmonies and some understatedly stylish guitar playing, though a little winsome in terms of some of the originasl songs.
