I do believe that Apple Pan Dowdy married Blind Lemon Jefferson in 1939---2 years after the latter had died!! She wanted his royalties, not realizing that he had never received any. Shoe Fly Pie recorded for Bluebird (2 sides only) in 1928. His Library of Congress recordings were called "too horrible for words" by John Lomax who resented that his son ever recorded "someone of his ilk".

Just a note for the uninitiated, Shoo Fly Pie is a pie made with a molasses filling. It has something of the flavor and consistency of a pecan pie but without the nuts. If you have never tasted either, you have missed a true southern treat. On the other hand, I have never knowingly had Apple Pan Dowdy. I was once told that it was something like a cobbler. I guess my education has been sorely neglected in this area.

When I look at myself in the mirror and at those Mudcatters who have been brave enough to send in photos, I guess it shows we are as interested in good food as music!
From my reading of Rex Stout I knew American food was not all greasy spoons and tv dinners and these foodie threads have shown what a wealth of good eating still goes on in people's homes!

When I was a kid we always thought Dinah Shore was a brontasaurus. (She was a sweet southern singer as tasty as Apple Pan Dodi. Just ask Bert Reynolds.)

Allan C., I agree regarding Shoo Fly Pie being similar to pecan pie minus nuts. With all that sugar, the name is easily understood! The only SFP I've had was made by an Amish family selling baked goods at a "Farmers' Market"...

I have been informed by a "northerner" that I may be mistaken in my belief that these are southern concoctions. They tell me that these are native to the "Pennsylvania Dutch" country. Seems plausible to me. Maybe it was Dinah's southern drawl that threw me off.

Do you actually like it? I must say that, having lived for a number of years in Shoo Fly Pie Country, I never could figure our what the big deal was--I do like Pepper Hash, and Red Velvet Cake, and all those wonderful bean salads, and I especially miss Perkasie Salad, which was what they called the stuff made with Broccoli and Bacon and a sweet and sour dressing where I lived--

Apple Pan Dowdy is close to being a perfect food - and the occasional piece of SFP will certainly calm the sugar cravings....though I like 'spaws buttermilk pie better.

M Ted: Is Perkasie Salad named after the town of Perkasie in Pennsylvania? That's in my general neck of the woods (I used to work there). Can I go there to find it, or the recipe for it? (BTW, for the rest of the world, Perkasie is pronounced "PER - ka - see")

MMario, that is probably a pretty close approximation of the Perkasie Salad, though there may be regular raisins instead of the yellow ones.

SharonA, yes, it is the same Perkasie, and the salad can be got(along with the beans and other things) from the Landis Supermarket, either the one in Perkasie or the one on County Line Road in Teleford--(and if you like, Landis has an all you can eat buffet, which features many of their deli items) remember, they aren't open on Sundays.
