Subject: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 12 Jan 12 - 12:27 PM Just found out that our eldest daughter has been diagnosed with a grade 4, inoperable tumour in her lung. Prayers, thoughts, meditations...whatever you do in a crisis, spare us a minute or two in your 'quiet times', we really do need all the help we can get, With Love, Nigel & Ann Paterson. |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: GUEST,Manuel Date: 24 Jan 12 - 09:09 PM Nigel, in a posting of 18 Jan 2012 you told a friend (Tom) of the illness of your wife's daughter and of your having to care for grandchildren. Am I to presume that it was Jane you were there talking about and that the grandchildren in question are her children? I post this with the good intention of giving more of an identity to the main person for whom we are all praying. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: gnu Date: 24 Jan 12 - 09:28 PM My continued thoughts and prayers. And, could a mod change the thread title to reflect who we are caring about please? It seems rather impersonal even tho it was obviously not intended in any way to be such. These threads are about friends. They should be named in the thread title. Sorry if that offends in ANY way ANYbody. Just the way I feel... late at night... caring about friends. |

|
Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: ChanteyLass Date: 02 Feb 12 - 08:33 PM Oh, you are right, Manuel! I read 999's post very literally and thought he'd "stopped In" at the home of someone who had good news and told that person he hoped everything was going well. On rereading his comment I guess he meant he was "stopped in" at Mudcat. Sigh. Regardless, prayers continue! (This is what happens when I read and post at 11:18 PM.) |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: GUEST,999 Date: 03 Feb 12 - 09:29 AM I wish I had. As yet I've heard nothing from Nigel, but I expect he has no access to a computer. I'm sure though that if he gets around to one Mudcat will be somewhere on his touch-base list. Also, if a mod could pls remove my 02 Feb 12 - 11:27 PM post? I'd meant it for another thread. Screwed up. Sorry. |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 13 Feb 12 - 12:17 PM "Time gives us perspective to put things in". Bruce, you're so right...problem is, we don't know at this stage, just how much time we've got. We are 'hangin' in'...just...each in our own particular way. For Ann & I, one of the hardest things is just getting on with the daily chores. The laundry piles up, the dusting doesn't get done, sink's full of washing up. All these humdrum activities simply fade into the background...our every waking thought & every ounce of energy occupied by Life's greatest challenge. It's good to know that you're all out there...stay with us, please, With Love, Nigel & Ann Paterson. |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: ChanteyLass Date: 16 Feb 12 - 11:39 PM In spite of all our prayers, some days are bound to be worse than others. I hope all our prayers mean that there will be fewer bad days. I'm sorry that this was one of them. And I'm still praying. |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 17 Feb 12 - 03:14 AM Woke up early this morning with a head full of thoughts & 'what ifs' which I really didn't want to confront or have to deal with. However, one of the thoughts needs to be shared here. This 'Ship of Hope' which I launched on Jan. 12th, whilst we know it's probable final destination, the time taken to reach our ultimate port of call remains, and will almost certainly remain, unknown for some time to come. The voyage could be longer than we had anticipated, the seas hostile & rough, supplies could run low...it feels unreasonable of me to expect all of you currently 'on board' to remain so until we drop that final anchor. Maybe you could join me in my metaphor & let me know how you feel about this. With Love to You All, Nigel & Ann. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: banjoman Date: 17 Feb 12 - 06:48 AM I think I speak for most contributors to this thread - when I say that we signed on for the journey no matter how long it takes. You need support and prayer for yourselves as well as for Jane, and I know that you are included in all our prayers and best wishes. Your ship of hope has a first rate skipper in yourself, and a trusting and dedicated crew. We will keep you in mind even if you feel you may have to stop contributing to this thread. Bset wishes to you both Pete |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: GUEST,999 Date: 17 Feb 12 - 10:08 AM "it feels unreasonable of me to expect all of you currently 'on board' to remain so until we drop that final anchor." Nigel, I was on-call for 15 years as a volunteer firefighter. Of the 8760 hours in a year I spent 2000 of them working at a job I couldn't leave. I also spent 500 hours out of the province or otherwise indisposed. That left 6260 hours when I answered the pager. I don't think keeping your daughter, your missus and you in my thoughts for however long you need it will be much of an inconvenience if you know what I mean. In the words of my grandmother, "Are you daft?" Friendship doesn't look at clocks. |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: katlaughing Date: 17 Feb 12 - 01:08 PM Nigel, thanks for telling us of your thoughts and concerns for us. I echo what Pete/Banjoman said...in it for the long haul, that's what life really is anyway, isn't it? Prayers, good thoughts, thanks givings...these cost nothing and whatever good we each send out can return to us threefold or more. That's NOT why most of us offer it, but it is said to show you it is NOT a burden to help in this way, as we are each able. Fair sailing through thick and thin, stormy, sunny, and in-between to land on the shore, wherever and whatever that may be, we are here with you. With all good wishes for Peace Profound, kat |

As we voyage together, along with your intercessions & words of wisdom, perhaps we could also include the occasional: "You'll never guess what happened to me today" type of thing or a simple reflection on how your day has gone...I'll endeavour to do the same. Whilst my feet are firmly planted on the deck of this wondrous vessel, I don't want to forget what dry land feels like. With Much Love to You All, Nigel & Ann Paterson. PS Please don't feel obliged to engage or play with this nautical metaphor once it's served it's purpose. |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: GUEST,999 Date: 18 Feb 12 - 09:31 AM Can't make up its mind here whether it's gonna be winter or become spring. Knowing Canada, it'll get right nasty later, thaw for a few hours, freeze overnight and be just fine for skating whether or not ya want to. Only fell on me arse once this winter. Had nowt to do with weather. It ain't the vodka that gets ya, it's those darned steppes. |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 18 Feb 12 - 11:41 AM Saturday afternoon...a wet, chilly East London...not much to lift the spirits, so a clumsy attempt at poetry will have to suffice. "Walk beside me, hold my hand. We're using time that wasn't planned. Don't walk behind & force my pace, There is no need for us to race. And if in front your feet should stray, Hold back, slow down, don't run away. So walk beside me, touch my face And feel the warmth of my embrace As walking side by side forever Binds so tight that none can sever". Ann is spending the weekend with Jane...just Mother & Daughter together, so I had them both very much in mind as the lines above took shape. Much Love to You All, Nigel & Ann |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 19 Feb 12 - 06:06 AM ChanteyLass, my apologies, I forgot to say that your references to: "...all things nautical" combined with Music & finally your prayers fitted so well with the sun streaming through my window. Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: banjoman Date: 19 Feb 12 - 06:23 AM Sunday - weather is fine & sunny. Played music at vigil service last evening & met a priest visiting from Africa. He gave a sermon about people ignoring each other in Church. Reminded him of the wealth of people (This site) who really do care for each other. Anyway - his prayers are now included for Jane. It suddenly dawned on me that a lot of people are praying for me, and probably lots of others on this thread who have health problems. |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: katlaughing Date: 21 Feb 12 - 12:25 AM As jacqui said, that is a GREAT visualisation to hold onto! Your poem went straight to my heart. How beautiful, loving, and poignant. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. Our part of Colorado is laughingly called the Banana Belt for its mild winters. Yesterday we had a raw, cold wind with huge grey clouds filling the sky. This morning we woke to 2-3 inches of snow, BUT a bright sunny, deeply blue Colorado sky and it was gloriously beautiful. Most of the snow is gone and the sun has remained. Each night, my grandson and I read to one another over the telephone, then I sing him a couple of lullies, and we say a prayer of giving thanks, part of which includes, "...we give thanks for blessings for all of our families and friends..." May it be so for all of us, esp. Jane, Nigel, and Ann. kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 21 Feb 12 - 05:46 AM You wonderful people never cease to amaze me...your words of wisdom so eloquently expressed...your intercessions & your desire to 'crew this ship' on it's voyage of hope...it takes my breath away. I'm reminded at this point that I always write in the 'first person', but rest assured, my beloved wife, Ann is standing shoulder to shoulder with me at the helm. I've received PMs, emails, handmade, thought- filled gifts...what more could I ask for. We voyage onwards, but there are rough seas ahead. The latest weather forecast anticipates testing times. Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 22 Feb 12 - 07:51 AM I'm not a "God-fearing" man...not too keen on labels either, but if pushed, I would describe myself as a Humanist. I worship at the church of Life & Nature. I do, however, believe fervently in the power & integrity of The Human Condition, which includes our desire & ability to 'do whatever is needed to alleviate the suffering of others'. This thread underscores that 'desire & ability' in ways I have rarely experienced in my 64 years. Please continue with your intercessions, your prayers, your meditations, your positive thinking...whatever it is you do when you reach out to that 'needy other'. Ann & I try to visualise all of you every day...a sea of smiling, welcoming, compassionate faces. Knowing you're all there is a great comfort...stay close, With Love, Nigel & Ann. |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 25 Feb 12 - 06:05 AM Creating something new, which in my case, happens to be a piece of Music, takes me to a 'different place' for an hour or two & reminds me that despite everything, Life DOES go on. Over the past few months, our Lives have been changed in ways we could never have imagined or anticipated, but by acknowledging the fact that "Life Goes On", actually enables us to support Jane all the better. Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: GUEST,999 Date: 25 Feb 12 - 08:57 AM "I managed to cobble together 36 bars" I did that one week in the 1960s. And 'cobble together' is the right term for it, buddy. Worst hangover I ever had. Music is a key to understanding, or at least a method of sorting things out. When my youngest had that cyst growing in her head, I turned to music and my guitar because there was no where else to turn. Often there IS no where else to turn. And writing/composing lets ya say what ya want without the need for words, none of which ever seem 'right' anyway. When you finish the piece, I hope to hear it. BM |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Genie Date: 27 Feb 12 - 11:56 PM Nigel Paterson, I'm not especially good at visualizing (being stronger in auditory processing), but as much as I can I will keep your image - Jane standing in some wide open space, way out in the countryside, bathed in sunlight, with the rays of sun gently healing her - in my mind. And if I can "audiolize" some healing music to go with it, I will do that too. Prayers and healing thoughts coming to all of you. Genie |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 28 Feb 12 - 07:16 AM Ann & I went right back to the start of this thread & re-read every post. There's something very special happening here. We still find it incredible that so many Good People are prepared to support us, intercede for us or simply pass the time of day with us. Despite the horrors that we read in our papers & watch on the TV News, my belief that Humankind is fundamentally good in it's intentions remains unshakable. The microcosm that is this thread proves that over & over, day after day after day. With Love to You All, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 28 Feb 12 - 11:43 AM I've spent several hours today shredding redundant paperwork. Although somewhat noisy, I found it surprisingly relaxing & distracting. Had to stop eventually as the shredder became hot enough to cook on! I do recommend it as a short term panacea...the operative words being: 'short term'. The all-encompassing reality of Jane & her health confronts us, which ever way we turn. As each day passes, that realisation bears down upon us insidiously & inexorably. With Love to You All, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: gnu Date: 28 Feb 12 - 12:36 PM I refuse to shred my mountain. Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 29 Feb 12 - 04:28 AM gnu, there are a couple of doctors who might be joining your 'Revenue Men' on the bonfire. I rather like the idea of an 'accidental' nudge! And just for the record, I shredded all my cell phone bills going back as far as 2001. At least now they might be recycled into something useful! Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: katlaughing Date: 29 Feb 12 - 11:14 AM I've made my Rog promise to cremate everything of mine which he or my children and friends don't want. (I don't like the idea of anything I've held dear just going into a rubbish heap or sent off to charity, though I have no problem doing either as I live and breath!:-)I 'spose that could include a lot of paper, but I tend to shred on a regular basis. Nigel, I hope there will be a way for us to hear your composition, soon. When I first started writing for publication etc., I found my best stuff came out of great strife, joy, or challenges. The high emotions fed the creative muse. Now, for my own sake, it's better that I do it as a matter of course, though there are still those *sparks* which guide and inspire. I am glad you have found such an outlet as you, Ann, and Jane go through these rough seas. With thanks givings for ease of hearts, minds, and spirits, luvyakat |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 29 Feb 12 - 12:29 PM For inclusion under the title: "You'll never guess what happened to me....." Last night/this morning (00.01) to be precise, Mrs.P & I are safely tucked up in bed & the phone rings. As you can imagine, with our current situation being what it is, a call at this hour tends to up the old heart rate a notch or six. It wasn't the hospital, it wasn't our Son-in-Law...it was our telephone service provider reminding us, courtesy of a recorded message, that they would be coming round next week to upgrade our landline...AT ONE MINUTE PAST BLOODY MIDNIGHT! I lodged a very strongly worded complaint as soon as they were open for business this morning. As soon as I hear anything, I'll let you all know just how far between their legs they were prepared to put their tail! With Love, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 03 Mar 12 - 11:18 AM There's something I've been wanting to say for weeks, but words like 'mawkish' & 'maudlin' keep getting in the way, but finally, here goes. In high school I was bullied incessantly from the age of 12 until 16. The physical pain is long gone, but some of the psychological wounds remain unhealed to this very day. Gradually, over time, one by one, my 'friends' deserted me. Understandable really...if they were seen fraternising with me, they got beaten up. Why am I writing about this? Well, all You Good People reading this have become/replaced the friends I lost (And never regained). I know the circumstances are completely different, but it's your persistence, loyalty, compassion, love & humour...qualities I have always looked for & treasured, that you bring to me every day via this thread. It's strange yet true that a large group of people, most of whom I will never meet, have become the dearest, most trusted Friends a man could ever wish for. May the goodness You bestow on Jane , Ann & Myself be reinvested one hundredfold on your Families & in your Lives. With Love to our Rainbow Crew, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 06 Mar 12 - 04:02 AM Positive news...the Doctors have curtailed the spread of the cancer & the existing tumours are no larger...they've managed to press the clinical 'pause button'. (The operative word here is 'pause'.) In practical terms it gives The Family an opportunity to 'regroup' emotionally & consider what plans could be realistically made for the immediate future. The 'Big Picture' remains, but at least a significant part of that picture, has, for the time being, been modified in Jane's favour. With Love to You All, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxxx |

In whatever way we all do it, we are all behind you and I sincerely hope you can feel that. Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 07 Mar 12 - 10:43 AM Yes Pete, I agree, but for me it has to be the 'Gerry & the Pacemakers' version! Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 07 Mar 12 - 11:13 AM My Dear Spaw, I know without a shadow of a doubt that You're all out there. And I know too that finding the 'right words' can be terribly difficult. It's not necessary to check in every day...I can visualise you all in an instant & you become this huge human 'shawl' which Jane & Ann & myself can wrap tightly around our shoulders. Now, about an extra 'T' in my surname...over the years, I've become very attached to my single 'T' spelling. Doubling the 'T' is something I just could not do, regardless of any perceived benefits!! I'm grateful for the offer of an additional one, but adopt it I can't. If, however, you made me a 'T', I would happily display it with my other 'treasures'! ChanteyLass...how is your breathing? Normal inspiration/expiration from now on please! These lighter moments are an absolute delight, With Love, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: ChanteyLass Date: 07 Mar 12 - 09:32 PM I'm breathing fine now, but, Kat, my cheeks are always red. I have rosacea! I don't see any problem with having just one t in your name. I named my son Forest with one r. I wanted to name him after something in nature and I would have named a girl that, too, if that's what I'd had. I like the idea of trying to think of some appropriate songs. For now I'm drawing a blank. But I'm still praying! |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Donuel Date: 07 Mar 12 - 09:53 PM Although I am limited to posting but once a fortnight, I check in often and celebrate your time among real flesh and blood buddies as well as all your sincere virtual friends here who love you with spooky action at a distance. |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 08 Mar 12 - 04:28 AM To all the good people who are following this thread but have never posted, let me say that you are most welcome. Of course, it would be great to hear from you, but Ann & I appreciate your discreet presence nonetheless. To Bruce, rough cut received & much appreciated. It's quite uncanny how you get the Music & the time you send it, just right. My special folder is beginning to bulge a little! To ChanteyLass, I think Forest is a beautiful name for a son or daughter. For me it has overtones of strength & dignity. I'm reminded of an actor named For(r)est Tucker from way back, but can't remember if he was 'r' or 'rr'! And to all of You who check in every day, but don't necessarily post every day, Ann & I know you're there...it's similar to taking a walk in the country with a close friend & enjoying the countryside for what it is...what words there are become almost superfluous & unnecessary. It's the 'being there in the moment' that becomes important. Your words, thoughts & intercessions are key to the Love & Support You give us, but simply 'being with us in the moment' is important too. With Love, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: banjoman Date: 08 Mar 12 - 06:25 AM Nigel - I remember seeing Gerry Marsden at the Lowlands in West Derby Village (Liverpool) long before he was famous. (That dates me a bit) I also saw a group called the Huyton Quarry Men at the Cavern ( I think it was there)around the same time.( You know who they became?) Check the words of I watch The Sunrise - there is a thread on this the words always provoke a lot of thought and we have played it on all sorts of occasions - happy and sad. Best wishes Pete |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: katlaughing Date: 09 Mar 12 - 12:01 AM Forest Whitaker, a superb actor, imo, spells it with just one "r." CL, you may not know, Spaw was referring to his last name and Micca's, both of which have two "t"s. Nigel, Ann, and Jane...I love checking in here. I can't find the quote, but I think it was the late Rick Fielding who said something about Mudcat being full of best friends you've never met. Well, now you've met us.:-) Best of love and peace to you all, kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 09 Mar 12 - 12:46 AM good news accompanied by many good words (& some whacky words!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 09 Mar 12 - 03:33 AM Kat, that quote: "....Mudcat being full of best friends you've never met". sums up our thread perfectly. Ann & I WOULD like to meet all of you though. I'm playing around with this fantasy where I have unlimited access to vast amounts of money...I hire the largest marquee available...have it set up in the same space I visualised Jane being healed by the sun...pay for all your travelling expenses (business class or better) & accomodation...hire some of the world's best musicians (a mixture of genres) to entertain us, but with enough time for some of us to do our own thing too...hire some of the world's best chefs to feed us...we meet, have the party to end all parties & celebrate Jane's life. If YOU were making all the arrangements: 1. Where in the world would you site the marquee? 2. Which bands/groups/soloists would you book? 3. Which chefs/cooks would you hire? 4. How many of you would like to sing/play a number or two? Don't forget, money is no object, so indulge yourself! With Love, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 09 Mar 12 - 04:07 AM Pete, we are obviously of a similar age, and that comes with a bonus attached...we've both lived through the era of some of the greatest 'popular music' (used in the broadest sense possible) ever written. As for the 'Quarry Men', yes I & hopefully most of the Western World at least, know what became of them! I found the words to 'I Watch the Sunrise' very moving & appropiate. I hope this is the hymn to which you were referring: I Watch the Sunrise I watch the sunrise lighting the sky, Casting its shadows near. And on this morning bright though it be, I feel those shadows near me. But you are always close to me Following all my ways. May I be always close to you Following all your ways, Lord. I watch the sunlight shine through the clouds, Warming the earth below. And at the mid-day, life seems to say: I feel your brightness near me. For you are always . . . I watch the sunset fading away, Lighting the clouds with sleep. And as the evening closes its eyes, I feel your presence near me. For you are always . . . I watch the moonlight guarding the night, Waiting till morning comes. The air is silent, earth is at rest Only your peace is near me. Yes, you are always… (Can anyone explain the final 'O' with the diaeresis please?) Thanks Pete, With Love, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 09 Mar 12 - 12:22 PM As we're exploring a fantasy, along with the unlimited budget, musicians, bands, chefs, cooks who have found their place in the Great Concert Hall/Kitchen in the sky can be re-born & resurrected for the occasion. Kat, that recording you've linked to is really beautiful. I said a few days ago that I wasn't a "God fearing Man", but I'm certainly not immune to the sentiments & depth of expression that this Hymn conveys. Thanks again to Pete for bringing it to our attention. That final 'O' with it's diaeresis appears to be some sort of typo, unless, of course, it's a special abbreviation. On the recording, the final word is: 'Lord'. GUEST 'I Don't Know' asked how long our Fantasy Party would last. I can only think at the moment that it would have to include at least one sunset & one sunrise. This could have a bearing on where in the world we pitch the marquee. Having asked all of you to suggest locations, musicians, chefs etc., I'm having a bit of a struggle on my own behalf...more to do with who I leave out, rather than who I include. Paul Simon, Johnny Silvo, Jean Redpath, The BBC Concert Orchestra get my musician's list underway...much more thought required. With Love to You All & The Best Of Weekends, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: ChanteyLass Date: 09 Mar 12 - 10:42 PM Jean Redpath would be on my list, too. She was supposed to be coming to the Blackstone River Theatre in RI in April (I think) but had to cancel due to illness. And Gordon Bok would be on my list, too. He had to cancel his Stone Soup appearance tomorrow because of illness. Anyone know any more about these two fine performers? I hope they are both soon well. I'd like Bob Franke, Si Kahn, the Johnson Girls, and Mudcat's own Debra Cowan and John Roberts on the list of performers. Oh, and Eric Bogle. Then I'd like to add some of my own favorite local performers, Joyce Katzberg, Bill Harley, Atwater-Donnelly and . . . Uh-oh, this is like the awards thank-you speeches: I know I'm leaving out someone. Since I can't carry a tune or remember lyrics, I won't be performing, but I will be singing along, albeit off-key. As for place, I'd like it to be on an island that has a good climate, all the amenities for comfort but not luxury, and not be too crowded (before we arrive) or too remote. I'm an omnivore but lean toward vegetarian choices, but Kat's vegan foods would be fine, too. And Kat, I didn't know about Micca's last name. In fact I don't even know what that last name is! While I've begun to figure out some of the Who's Who on Mudcat, in some cases I still don't even know who is using his/her name or, like me, a nom de plume, and in some cases I'm not even sure if posts are written by a man or woman! In my case, at least, that last should be obvious! One thing I do know, and that's that I'm praying! ; ) |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: katlaughing Date: 09 Mar 12 - 11:04 PM Well, if it's our fantasy and it can include those who've gone on, I want Rick Fielding to be there! And John Lennon. From those among us still, Art Thieme would be a must as well as many other Mudcatters. CL, if you are on facebook, check out the Mudcat there. Folks have been posting who they are in real life & Mudcat. Nigel, when I looked at your text in mod form, the O still showed up funny. I took it out, but not sure where you want a final "Lord?" It is in the first chorus text, so I figured the later ellipses included it. Please let me know if that's not correct. Good weekend to you all, too! |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: ChanteyLass Date: 10 Mar 12 - 11:06 PM I want to add Emmylou Harris, Holly Near, and Jez Lowe to my list. Getting back to food, I would prefer organic plant produce, free range chickens, grass-fed beef (though I rarely eat beef), wild-caught fish) dairy products with no hormones, etc. I may be an omnivore, but I try to make the best choices. Kat, funny you should mention Mudcat on FB. I friended it and once in a while saw the Mudcat logo with a message on my Wall, but that hasn't happened for a while, and I knew nothing about the identities page. I went to it and saw no place for me to add mine. Then I went to Mudcat's Wall and had to request to join! I requested that and hope to be able to post soon. I have no idea what happened to my original connection to Mudcat on FB, though. I don't think I posted anything that would make me get unFriended! Nigel and Ann, well, you know . . . . I hope you are having a calm and restful weekend and enjoying reading our ideas for a folk festival fantasy. |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 12 Mar 12 - 03:36 AM Very pleased to report that the Trad. Roast Lunch was excellent...and served in one of the nicest restaurants we've been to in a long time...a converted boat house, right on the banks of the Thames. Good food (reasonably priced by London standards), ambience, wonderful views of the River with plenty of boating activity to watch, & the bonus, which all Brits & visitors appreciate...the sun shone the whole day! Jane's been having a rough time after the last chemo session & Sunday was the first day she felt more like her 'old self', so the meal + good weather+ good company gave her a much needed boost. Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 12 Mar 12 - 11:49 AM I omitted to say regarding our 'Fantasy Do' (thanks Pete), that as it is a fantasy, in the marquee, Time can be manipulated to suit our needs, so we can compress or extend ad libitum, so the number of musicians playing, the socialising...eating, celebrating, has no time boundaries. Once you step outside the marquee, Time is exactly where you left it...you rejoin the 'Real World' seamlessly & effortlessly. Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 13 Mar 12 - 03:08 AM The Musical Entertainment side of our 'Do' is taking shape very nicely. FB asked if there would be any dancing...OF COURSE...just don't expect me to appear on the dance floor any time soon. In my head I'm Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Rudolf Nureyev & Margot Fontaine all rolled into one...the problem is, all that wonderful 'head dancing' NEVER reaches my feet...I'm quite convinced that my feet belong to someone else...exchanged at birth, that kind of thing! Those of you who are not terpsichorially challenged, sand off the soles of your dancing pumps & start stretching! Now food...I would like to hire Phillip Harben & Fanny Craddock with her husband, Johnny...not so much for their cooking skills, more to do with entertainment value! And finally, a heads up for Thursday 15th March...I may be off line for a few hours, possibly the whole day. Broadband in our area is being upgraded to fibre optic (FTTP for those what know about these things). With Love, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx PS to FB: Do 'The All Stars' need exorcising? |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Janie Date: 14 Mar 12 - 10:30 PM Gonna cut and paste something that many consider a cliche because it is so often repeated. Familiarity may breed contempt. We forget to really tune in and hear the wisdom. One day at a time There are two days in every week about which we should not worry - two days that should be kept free from fear and apprehension. One of these days is yesterday with its mistakes and cares, faults and blunders, aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control. All the money in the world cannot bring back yesterday. We cannot undo a single act we performed. We cannot erase a single word we said. Yesterday is gone! The other day we should not worry about is tomorrow. Tomorrow's sun will rise, whether in splendor or behind a mask of clouds. Until it does, we have no stake in tomorrow. It is yet unborn. This leaves only one day - Today. It is when we add the burdens of two eternities - yesterday and tomorrow that we break down. It is not necessarily the experience of today that disturbs one's peace of mind. It is often the bitterness for something that happened yesterday and the dread of what tomorrow may bring. Let us therefore live one day at a time. Author Unknown Nigel, you can dance like Fred Astaire! |
|

That's about 4 minutes at the current tempo. Judging by the way it's developing, I think I'm approaching the mid-point. Another week or so should see the essential composing finished. After that it's all down to detailed editing, mixing & a final 'polish'. Other working titles have included 'The Ship/Voyage of Hope'. If you have any suggestions for a title, do let me know. Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: GUEST,999 Date: 19 Mar 12 - 05:14 PM Bless ya, Nigel. Make it perfect as you can. Music says things words don't. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 20 Mar 12 - 06:14 AM Yes, CL, the piece is coming together nicely. I've learned over the years that when you listen to what you're working on the next day (and the days after that) & it still sounds ok, then it probably is ok...so far, I'm in that happy position. My challenge now is to introduce some new material (whilst not losing sight of what already exists) to move the whole thing forward & then 'weave' all the themes together as the ending approaches. Bruce...rest assured, this piece will be as good as I can make it. 'Perfect'...I doubt it, but 'striving for perfection' can be a great motivator! 'Music says things words don't'. I love the written word, but as you so rightly say, there are times when Words have to step aside & allow Music to 'say' what needs to be said. A little update on Jane in Dubai. She's getting round to see all her friends, but in the company of one of her closest friends who travelled from the UK with her, in the role of a benevolent 'chaperone'. Jane is getting the rest & nourishment she needs, whilst still fulfilling her social calendar. She returns to London at the end of this week. Leaving her friends & Dubai behind is going to be particularly tough. With Love, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: GUEST,999 Date: 21 Mar 12 - 09:40 PM Is there any chance we could have a room at the Festival for Buddy Rich and Max Roach? OK, not a tiny room, but one for a small symphony orchestra? I guess we all of us walk to different drummers. I'm walking along with you. Last night I had the strangest dream, Of tangelos and tangerines, And Ringo's Yellow Submarine And Nigel, Ann and Jane; No matter how the rivers flow, How swift, how silent, almost slow, We those of us who let you know Do so and don't explain. Subject: RE: BS: Healing thoughts & prayers please From: Nigel Paterson Date: 22 Mar 12 - 06:04 AM Bruce, always room for Buddy Rich & Max Roach. And as for a small symphony orchestra...no problem at all. Your poem (or could it be a lyric?) has touched Ann & I very deeply...it's exquisite & so totally personal. Ann & I have good days & bad...good moments & bad...it's the waiting & not really knowing that insidiously wears away at one, bit by little bit. Ann is crafting, I'm composing, the daily chores ARE now getting done...but our 'Big Reality' is never far away. We can keep it at bay for just so long & then, like some great emotional tsunami, it invades our every conscious thought. We're coping, but it doesn't get any easier. Without our Dear Mudcat Friends, we really would be cut adrift. With Love, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: freda underhill Date: 27 Mar 12 - 09:24 AM Kind friends all gathered 'round, there's something I would say: That what brings us together here has blessed us all today. Love has made a circle that holds us all inside; Where strangers are as family, loneliness can't hide. You must give yourself to love if love is what you're after; Open up your hearts to the tears and laughter, And give yourself to love, give yourself to love. I've walked these mountains in the rain and learned to love the wind; I've been up before the sunrise to watch the day begin. I always knew I'd find you, though I never did know how; Like sunshine on a cloudy day, you stand before me now. So give yourself to love if love is what you're after; Open up your hearts to the tears and laughter, And give yourself to love, give yourself to love. Love is born in fire; it's planted like a seed. Love can't give you everything, but it gives you what you need. And love comes when you're ready, love comes when you're afraid; It'll be your greatest teacher, the best friend you have made. So give yourself to if love is what you're after; Open up your hearts to the tears and laughter, And give yourself to love, give yourself to love. Give yourself to love, if love is what you're after; Open up your hearts to the tears and laughter, And give yourself to love, give yourself to love. by Kate Wolf, sung here by Holly Hanson best wishes freda |

Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: Nigel Paterson Date: 27 Mar 12 - 12:58 PM Dear Freda, thank you very much indeed for posting a song that fits this thread so perfectly. Simply but beautifully sung by Holly Hanson too. I wrote recently that Jane had returned from Dubai, refreshed & invigorated...this is turning out to be something of an understatement. Ann & I saw her Sunday last & again today...her conversation is animated, very little now seems to be 'off limits'. There is an abundance of humour & a genuine desire to communicate openly & frankly. The transformation in her demeanour is nothing short of amazing. Jane's oncologist told her today that what was to be a six session chemo treatment plan had been shortened to four, so yesterday's session has turned out to be her last. She will be monitored closely on a 'maintenance programme' from now on. What I wrote earlier too, about learning to live with her cancer is becoming a reality...Ann & I can scarcely believe our eyes & ears. With Love, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: Nigel Paterson Date: 29 Mar 12 - 09:57 AM Thank you for that cascade of good wishes. Ann & I are also learning to live with Jane's cancer. That whole process just got a little easier. I recently received a PM that has touched me very deeply. It reminded me that all you Good People have your own problems & anxieties to cope with & yet you still find time for Jane & Ann & me. I'm left feeling humbled & profoundly grateful & a little guilty too. The words to express what I'm feeling right now escape me for the moment. You truly are the greatest set of friends a man or woman could wish for. There is nothing 'virtual' about this...for Ann & I, it's as real as it gets. The piece of Music that celebrates our Friendship is taking longer to finish than I had imagined...it's leading me to Musical Places I had not planned for, although there's nothing fundamentally wrong with that, providing I keep a gentle hand on the tiller. With Love to You All, Nigel & Ann. xxxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: Nigel Paterson Date: 02 Apr 12 - 05:46 AM Ann has been staying with Jane these past two weeks. By all accounts, they have enjoyed every moment spent together. Jane is allowed to drive, so apart from shopping, they have also been able to explore some of the lovely Surrey countryside. We all met for lunch yesterday (Sunday). We chatted non-stop & there was plenty of laughter. It's good to see & hear Jane laughing...laughter & Jane are synonymous. When she received her initial diagnosis in January, there was precious little to laugh at. Things are not so desperate at the moment, our Ship has entered calmer waters, but stay close...check in when you can...post the occasional "Hi, I'm still here" type of thing...it all contributes to the overall support you have provided so generously & selflessly, With Love to You All, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: Nigel Paterson Date: 03 Apr 12 - 06:39 AM We set sail on January 12th...it's now 3rd april & we've crested 400 posts. Truly amazing. Truly amazing too, that Ann & I have been allowed to garner so many loyal & compassionate Friends. I'm feeling somewhat over-emotional as I type...had one of my own doctor's appointments this morning (muscle stuff that is annoying/irritating, but NOT life-threatening). Jane's situation came into the conversation & I broke down in the consulting room. My Doctor allowed me to sit there & take all the time I needed to settle myself. She sat there, calm & steady, not saying much, but what she did say was absolutely appropriate...kind, gentle words that calmed me. We over ran the allotted time considerably, but at no time did I get the feeling that my Doctor wanted me out. I could leave when I felt ok to do so. It's been quite a morning! With Love, Nigel & Ann. xxxxxxxxxx |

I am reading your posts every day but my life is going to be more hectic than usual for several weeks as it does at least twice a year with some good stuff, so I have less time to write. But I always have time to pray. Even if at some point I don't get to Mudcat, your family will remain in my thoughts and prayers. (How hectic is my life? Well, yesterday I got my hair cut so I will spend less time in the shower!) |

Be prepared for a future, on the assumption that there will be one, even if it's only tomorrow" ChanteyLass, pace yourself...get done what needs to be done & make sure there's always some time remaining, just for yourself (in or out of the shower!) Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: Nigel Paterson Date: 13 Apr 12 - 04:56 AM Pete, Surrey is the countryside through which we drove...plenty to see & do. Hello Sandra...Jane really has 'grasped the nettle'. Her PMA has touched us all in a positive way...brave girl. ChanteyLass, aspects of the meal were delicious, but overall, I was somewhat underwhelmed! The restaurant is owned by a VERY well known celebrity chef. A case of 'Talking the talk', but not quite 'Walking the walk!' However, nine of us crammed round a table intended for eight made up for any food shortcomings! With Love, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: Nigel Paterson Date: 15 Apr 12 - 06:12 AM Learning to live with (Jane's) cancer is similar in some respects to learning how to 'let go' as your Children work their way through school, go to college/uni & eventually 'fly the nest' to marry, seek work or just experience independence...stand on their own two feet. With the spread of Jane's cancer curtailed for the present, Ann & I have decided to 'take a step backwards' thereby giving Jane & her Family the independence to live their lives as they choose...we've been so closely involved (at times, probably too close) since January. Now is as good a time as any to 'take a back seat', whilst always waiting in the wings, so that we can respond quickly if anything 'unexpected' happens. We have discussed this with Jane & she feels too that it is the right course of action for all concerned. 'Lessons in Life'...you just never stop learning. With Love, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: GUEST,999 Date: 15 Apr 12 - 10:21 AM You all will continue in my thoughts. Got a tree full of grackles, sparrows, starlings, a pigeon, three mourning doves (which have got to be the most laid-back birds I ever saw), chickadees, downy and hairy woodpeckers, nuthatch but no partridge, 'cause it ain't a pear tree. Both Canadian and snow geese are back, and the blue jay. The cardinals have disappeared--about six weeks back, sun's shining, river's flowing and the wind ain't doing much to speak of. Later. |

Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: Nigel Paterson Date: 15 Apr 12 - 12:30 PM Bruce, your post would make a beautiful painting...or a song...or a poem...or a carefully executed piece of needlepoint. A sylvan scene to wonder at. With Love, Nigel & Ann xxxxxxxxx |

Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: ChanteyLass Date: 15 Apr 12 - 12:56 PM About that dinner: I once declined the opportunity to dine, at extra cost, at a celebrity chef's restaurant on a cruise ship. Many people in my tour group saw it as a once-in-a lifetime opportunity. I said I was very much enjoying the included meals in the regular dining room and didn't think the extra cost could possibly be justified. Or, as I put it, "Just how much better can the celebrity chef make a steak, lobster, or any other food taste?" Nigel and Ann, I think you are wise to step back even though that must be hard to do. Jane must know that you love her and will be there whenever she needs you. And I'm sure the Mudcat community will be here for you whenever you need us. Continuing prayers. |

Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: Nigel Paterson Date: 24 Apr 12 - 01:30 PM As ever, thank you All for your thoughtfulness & compassion. The results of Jane's tests were the best we could have had, under the circumstances. The tumours are still no larger & the cancer has not spread any further than the previous scans revealed. She is on a plane to Dubai as I type this, returning to the UK mid-May to continue with her Maintenance Programme. The Royal Marsden Hospital really are taking such good care of her. Jane & all of us have to live with the thought that the cancer could 'flare up' at any time, but, for the moment at least, we are all doing our level best to live our lives as normally as possible. Ann has a landmark birthday coming up soon which we will be celebrating in Dubai with all the Family...I know they're planning something special, but even I'm not privy to the details! Freda, the Macdonald River photo is absolutely beautiful. The tranquility positively oozes out of the shot. I know exactly what you mean about seeing stars...REALLY seeing stars for the first time. Our location couldn't have been more different. Ann & I were in the desert, well away from the centre of Dubai...we'd never seen so many stars (no light pollution)...we lay back in our folding chairs & gazed up in wonderment for ages...stunning experience. Janie, simple words that belie a deeper meaning...very grateful...you captured our mood precisely. We will be away soon for a few days. Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: GUEST,999 Date: 02 May 12 - 06:18 PM "i am physically well but sadly have been expecting to lose my mum anytime so if at anytime i drop out for awhile it is not lack of interest. God bless pete." I am not big on prayer, Pete, but I'll add your mum to the names Nigel, Ann and Jane. I am sorry for your sadness. I have admired your character and fortitude in the face of scathing remarks made to you in some threads, and now to see that you are facing a similar family situation with verve and courage, your support for Jane and her parents lends new meaning to the term Christian. |

Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: GUEST Date: 04 May 12 - 10:04 PM Nigel, I don't know when you'll read this but I hope you don't mind that Pete is included in the voyage. Let me rephrase that: I know you won't mind, but I hope you'll excuse me for including Pete before speaking with you. Three weeks ago my grandmother started bicycling eight miles a day. As of now, we have no idea where she is. The roughest roads/sea lanes make for the best and most touching stories. Looking forward to hearing from you, and hearing that your little sweetheart--don't matter how old they get, they're our kids--is doing well. I still think of you all every night. And say prayers, although unlike some people, I ain't quite sure who I'm saying the prayers to. Don't matter, because I know who I'm saying them for. B PS Pete is a really good guy, and he could use some words of kindness, as could we all. Keep well, Nigel, and the thread will continue until your return. The cabin boy, the cabin boy The d----------------------- Sometimes I get carried away. Reminds me of a night I attended a St Patrick's Day event. I'll tell you sometime. But not here. :-) |

Subject: RE: Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) From: Nigel Paterson Date: 14 May 12 - 04:46 AM Ann & I are saddened by the news of Pete's ailing Mother. We send him our warmest thoughts & want him to know that we share his voyage. On 'The Rainbow' we travel together, caring & looking out for each other. Initially, this thread was just about our daughter, Jane, but over the past few months, it's taken on a broader 'feel'. 'The Rainbow' is about all of us, our trials & tribulations...successes & failures...love & laughter...tears of sadness...tears of joy. No one needs permission to come aboard. Our holiday with Jane took us to the beach, the shops & malls, some excellent restaurants & seemingly endless cups of coffee, drunk in the company of a seemingly endless group of friends! She remains positive & determined to live each day with as much energy as she can muster. Jane returned to the UK yesterday with Ann & myself to continue her treatment programme. 'The Voyage of The Rainbow' is not quite ready for general publication, but if any of you would like to hear a 'rough mix', PM me your email address & I'll attach an mp3. Your privacy will be respected & your email address will NOT be shared with another living soul, you have my Word! On the other hand, if you're prepared to wait a week or two, I will make a link available to my Music Channel on YouTube. It's good to be home, Much Love to You All, Nigel & Ann. xxxxxxxxxx |
