I'm looking for an old wartime gospel number called "The Weapon of Prayer." The chorus includes the lines:"You don't have to be a soldier in a uniform/to be of service over there...let us trust and use the weapon of prayer."

It's an Ira & Charlie Louvin number
written by Ira [as most of their songs were]
according to Charlie, Ira could write a song
at the drop of a hat

Hello Fred (?)

I have a recording of thaT song ON the album "missing..." by The Notting Hillbillies, aka Mark Knopfler, Steve Philips, Guy Fletcher and Brendan Croker. It's really lovely. (Both the song and the album.) If you wanted the lyrics, here they are:

WEAPON OF PRAYER
(Charlie & Ira Louvin)

In that land across the sea
There's a job for you and me
Though our presence there may not be found
We must stay standing there
On the battle lines and pray
We must never lay our weapons down.

We don't have to be a soldier in a uniform
To be of service over there
While the boys so bravely stand
With the weapons made by hand
Let us trust and use the weapon of prayer.
Many thousand miles away
Someone shed their blood today
With a heart so true and brave they're gone
To a war that's yours and mine
Let us join the battle line
With a weapon that will save our home.
We don't have to be a soldier in a uniform
To be of service over there
While the boys so bravely stand
With the weapons made by hand
Let us trust and use the weapon of prayer.
And when the planes and tanks and guns
Have done all that they can do
And the mighty bombs have rained and failed
Still the helpful hand above
On the weapon made of love
And against him none of earth prevail.

Magpie

A couple of other interesting ones in that vein are the Charming Bells' 'Jesus Hits Like an Atom Bomb' and the Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet's 'Stalin Wasn't Stallin'' (ironically, it glorifies Stalin but was written in 1942).

My favorite among these lines is another Louvin Brothers song, "The Great Atomic Power" which I have sung (with friends who know the other part) at anti-nuke rallies for some time. But Weapon of Prayer is another one of the greats!

I performed this in our sesh last night.

Liked by the listeners, who asked origins.

I heard it from Notting Hillbillies years ago, but here's the composers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5mXvPhjfME

For some reason I keep picturing the holy hand grenade from Monty Python and the Holy Grail!
