Subject: BS: Big Media: Romney Wins 1st Debate...
From: Bobert
Date: 01 Oct 12 - 08:29 PM

Well, well, well...

Big Media needs a new story so...

...no matter what occurs Wednesday night Romney will be declared the winner...

That's right... News is entertainment and watching Obama surge ain't entertaining so they need to push their narrative on America so over the next week or two they can write and say "Obama losing ground" or "Romney gaining ground"... Those are the only options for Big Media...

BTW, you heard it here first...

Come on, eh? Do you REALLY think the media would "spin" something as important as a presidential debate? I mean, every US voter will watch it and decide for themselves, right? No brainer, eh?

Five of the last 6 of these things were called for the challenger, regardless of who won...

Just wait and see... I think they are poised to try to push Romney... I'd all but bet the farm on it...

Prez al-Obama couldn't fight his way out of a wet Pamper.
Hillary will have to be there to tell him what to say. He's tied to her apron strings. Her chuckleheaded puppet.

And then the Krinkz woke up...

Obama went before the entire Republican Congressional Caucus and tore them a new ***hole... People forget that... He doesn't need to prepare... And he probably is just kicking back sayin' he's preparin'...

I mean, this guy will kick Romney's butt... Tye problem is that Big Media ain't gonna see it that way...

Really... that is embarassing... even for you. I didn't think I could think any less of you but I was wrong.

There you go again, bobette. I tell ya,I wanted to like al-Obama. I wanted him to shake things up. Apologize to the nation of Iraq. Declare war on Pakistan. Turn Amerika into the neverending Burning Man Festival and Woodstock Nation we dream of. But he just goes along looking like a bobblehead. Hillary's porchmonquis.

You're predicting the debate result before it happens, Bobert??? And as a Media-announced loss for Obama? Why????? Do you enjoy the sense of martyrdom or something?

Sure, Big Media spins their news stories...and they look for controversy and senationalism. They're in the entertainment and propaganda business. But why are you assuming that specific result? They could just as well entertain either way...by saying Obama screwed up or by saying Romney screwed up. Or they could play it both ways, just to keep the pot boiling.

Maybe you should review Rev Wright's entire body of work and not focus on one sermon which, BTW, I agree with what he was saying... I been in a lot of black churches and lotta stuff goes on... Ain't nothin' like white churches that I know of... People get worked up and they speak of stuff that white folks don't want to talk about...

Yeah, in the context of what Rev. Wright was preaching, "God damned America"... I agree with the context...

What's you real problem, Krinkx... You ignorant of what Rev. Wright was talkin' about or you just hate black folks...

Your other posts say you hate black folks... BTW, I pay attention here to what people say so don't try to BS me...

Though I agree that the media have tried hard to make this election seem like an election, I don't think they'll give Mitt a push start. The momentum is going the other way so clearly that even Fox News and Bloomberg are giving Obama a five percent lead Romney has a Major Hill to climb They won't be able to resist the urge to kick a man when he's down.

Never forget, it's a game. The purpose of a game is to entertain the public, distract the public, and relieve them of their money. To keep the game interesting, it is desirable to stretch out the suspense about who is going to win for as long as possible. Given that, yeah, it would be advantageous for the Media to try and give Romney a bit of a boost at this point...just to keep things "interesting". (yawn...)

In the 1976 film Taxi Driver, when Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) is talking to a Secret Service agent, he gives his address as 154 Hopper Avenue, Fair Lawn, New Jersey. There is a Hopper Avenue in Fair Lawn, but 154 Hopper Avenue does not exist.

Don't get me wrong... I like some of NJ... I like the Pine Barrens and Long Beach Island and... Well, that's about all I like...

Some of ya'll know I got family in Jersey from my thread last year on the TV show "Bear Swamp Recovery"... Yep, Phil (Buddy to me) is my 1st cousin... He was purdy tough when he was young but now a days he has his son, P.J. and his grandson, Tiny, to take care of the tough stuff...

But never mind that...

Back to the debates and the media... Not even sure why the Krinkx put his address up unless he's trying to get folks to send him Christmas cards... I do cards but ain't addin' no one to the list for this year 'cause there are 16 in a box and the boxes I buy have 16 cards and I ain't buying no stenkin' 2nd box for Krinkx...

This should be an interesting evening for me to watch the debate. I'm embedded at a national legislative conference in Richmond, Virginia, and I'm planning to watch the faces and listen to the groans and moans at the nearest local watering place.

Robert Reich agrees with Bobert, almost.

I'm nervous because the debate is likely to be an equalizer, with neither of them obviously winning -- which would be tantamount to a win for Romney, because the media will treat them as neck-and-neck, and forget that Obama has momentum and the Romney campaign has been a disaster. Which, of course, is a self-fulfilling prophesy. We will see polls later this week showing them tied.

I think it will all depend on whether Romney answers questions about national issues with position 1---or 2--- or 3...or 3.167.

I'm sure Obama has relevant replies to all of them.

I'm not worried, Jack... I very much believe that Obama is going to win...

Take away Citizens United and Big Media he wins by 6 points...

I fully expect Big Media to try to create news tonight and my gut feeling is that over the next month that margin will end up at 4 points...

It's a shame...

But, like I have said, the real shame is that the format does not leave to a policy discussion... It will end up a series of 2 minute commercial with shorter ones in between and in the final analysis won't reveal anything new... It's like a beauty contest...

Now should I get up in the night and watch the debate? Apparently new polls are bad news for Obama (baffled as to why - and the Joe Biden "gaffe" is obviously a reference to the toxic legacy of Bush, and current Republican bill-blocking). If Romney gets in, kiss your arse goodbye - there will be armed uprisings in the USA and WWIII within a year - and an uninhabitable planet if not wiped out by nuclear war before then within 20.

It's by no means clear that "Big Media" will declare a win for Romney.

First we should define terms.    "Big Media" is basically a meaningless yet emotionally-laden term.   Does it include the Washington Post and NYT?    Neither is likely to declare a win for Romney, for a whole host of reasons, most of which should be obvious.

It would be nice--though unlikely on Mudcat, it seems--to have a rational debate about the debate (or most other political topics).

It seems clear to me that what Obama and Romney say is probably not as important as the attitude which comes across to the viewer.   In this regard, I'd say Obama has a real chance to "win" the debate.   What he needs to do is make Romney appear whiny and petulant, hence not presidential.    I know this can be done since it's been done to Romney already--by other Republicans in their debates.   Best guess as to how to accomplish it:    drop 47% in at every opportunity--not aggressively, just off the cuff.    That number seems be achieving cosmic signficance in this election and sliding it into the conversation--in an offhand manner---is very likely to really wind Romney up---and the game could be over.

It's also obvious what Romney is going to do:    bring up the old question at every opportunity:    "Are you better off now than 4 years ago.

Obama has to be sure not to get rattled by this mantra--and to have a counter, perhaps pointing out that Republicans have blocked many of his economic initiatives.

Ironically enough, Obama will not be able to mention the bedrock truth behind the economic situation:    that no president has more than a tangential influence on economics.    Neither the unemployed nor people who feel worse off than 4 years ago will accept this from a president.

So what Obama needs to do is establish beyond doubt that he does identify with the pain people are going through, that he is working himself into the ground dealing with it --and that Romney has in fact written off about half the country.

Like I said, Ron... Big Media pushed that Reagan response to Carter as if it was the Holy Grail... I watched that debate and I thought that Carter won the debate...

Big Media didn't... The "Are you better off" part of the debate was not the hight light until Big Media decided that it was and pushed it...

That's my problem with these debates... No one get a glimpse of these people's thinking... I mean, if they would just zero on "tax policy" and nothing else that would be a debate and at the end of the night the folks who watched it would better understand tax policy and the differences between the two...

But that won't happen... The debates will bounce from one question that elicits sound-bite answers to the next... Not a debate at all... Just a beauty show where Big Media is the judge...

Missed opportunity by Obama.    Not one mention of 47%.   No attempt to rattle Romney, thus allowing him to come across not only as organized (with several lists of plans) but also as a reasonable person (albeit promising everything to everybody, with no hint of how to pay for it.).   Romney at the end: I will (help) create 12 million new jobs. Totally meaningless statement.   Question is how many gullible people now on the fence will believe it.

Romney even came across with specific anecdotes of people he had met---thus picturing himself as a compassionate person as well as the voice of sweet reason.   And no attempt by Obama to rebut this hogwash.

Not good.

Hope it does not change many minds.

As they say, politics ain't beanbag.    Obama was entirely too kind to Romney.

No question that both men came off well. To my mind, the president did better because he used a more reasoned approach- but I'm not so sure that Romney supporters would agree. Romney came across as more impassioned so maybe his dearth of details won't matter to those supporters.

Neither man scored zingers- but I did resent that Romney in his allotted closing moments repeated statements that had earlier been dissected and refuted by Mr. Obama- and of course, those repeated statements were left to stand.

Really... what? And how does a moderator not ASK? Doesn't a moderater simlpy ASK without imposing HIS iterpretation? I was disgusted.

I was aghast before EITHER even spoke. When the moderator paused during the introduction after begging decorum to allow the audience more than enough time to cheer Obama and they did not, AS ASKED NOT TO DO... it totally floored me.

I call that one a draw based purely on being a judge. That was a draw. My comment is based on how *I* perceive Yanks saw it - the general viewing public Yanks.

However, again, you Yanks do not understand fair debate. That was a dog and pony show at best. Sad. Very sad. High school kids could have done a better job on all sides of the coinS.

I watched the debate; I wasn't going to but I did. The inmates ran the asylum, pretty much. I spent a few minutes at CNN's recap, and MSNBC's recap. To hear Carville and Matthews tell it, the president barely showed up. I'll get Conservative comments tomorrow.

A few of things struck me:

Romney seemed to always be looking at the president during Mr. Obama's orations, but he blinked an awful lot. Conversely, the president often was looking down (at his notes? his shoes?) when Romney spoke. I thought this very telling.

Both debaters seemed to be able to run roughshod over Lehrer, resulting in the president getting to speak 4-5 min. longer than the challenger. Romney, however, did manage to get in an extra turn a couple of times as Lehrer tried to go forward.

CNN had a crawl at the bottom of the screen which, I surmise, was tracking instantaneous reactions to the candidates as they spoke. It was broken down by sex (what most of you call gender). No matter the topic, Obama generally had higher approval from women than men, and Romney generally did better with men.

I would give Romney an edge in tonight's fracas. But I don't think it was any sort of a knockout.

I think, based on what was said, it was a draw. BUT I think Romney scored a slight win simply because he didn't say anything stupid. There was one time when Obama went after Romney about where the money was gonna come from--the MATH) and the smarm started to crack, but he didn't pursue it long enough.

The overtime stuff, which Romney started with the first question (and as John said, got a couple extra turns) and both candidates continued, drove me nuts. I kept wishing Lehrer could turn into Chris Matthews and just interrupt them and not back down.

The one thing I wish President Obama had gotten across is that you can't work with people on the other side if they refuse to work with you, and that Congress is as responsible for the budget, AND the debt as the President.

Rather than go to one of the plethora of Democrat-owned websites and get the predictable DNC talking points, here is what an Irish website has to say about last night's debate:

Romney wins first debate against Obama

"
Republican candidate Mitt Romney overturned the presidential race last night in a stunning victory over US president Barack Obama in the first of their three debates.

A CNN/ORC post-debate poll showed that 67 per cent of viewers believed Mr Romney won the debate on domestic policy. Only 25 per cent said Mr Obama won.

"A week ago, people were saying this was over," said David Gergen, a political consultant and former advisor to four presidents. "Americans thought two to one that the president would win the debate, and he lost. Now the race is back on."

From the outset, Mr Romney gave the impression he enjoyed the confrontation with Mr Obama, whom he watched closely, with a smug grin, throughout the 90 minute debate. Mr Obama almost never looked at Mr Romney, and gave the impression he wished he were elsewhere.

In his opening remarks, Mr Obama wished his wife Michelle a happy 20th wedding anniversary, calling her "Sweetie" and promising that "a year from now, we will not be celebrating in front of 40 million people".

The joke fell flat, but was retrieved by Mr Romney, who prompted the heartiest laughter of the evening when he congratulated the Obamas. "I'm sure this was the most romantic place you could imagine, being here with me," he told Mr Obama.

Mr Obama's lacklustre performance may have been the result of nearly four years in the White House, unchallenged by sycophantic aides. His facial expressions seemed to indicate annoyance, irritation, even outrage at what Mr Romney was saying, yet he never attacked the Republican challenger.

In his moment of greatest exasperation, Mr Obama said, "Governor Romney says he is going to replace (heathcare reform) with something, but he can't detail how it would be replaced… it reminds me of when he says he is going to close loopholes and deductions for his tax plan, but we don't know the details… Is the reason that Governor Romney is keeping all these plans secret because they are too good?"

Mr Obama did not once mention the "47 per cent video" in which Mr Romney said "it's not my job to worry about" nearly half of Americans who pay no income tax.

After months during which his campaign hammered away at heartless practices at Bain Capital, the private equity firm founded by Mr Romney, Mr Obama never mentioned Bain. He did not allude to Mr Romney's refusal to release more than two years' income tax returns. Nor did he point out that under Mr Romney, Massachusetts ranked 47th out of 50 states for job creation.

Mr Romney successfully executed the "Etch-a-Sketch" erasure that one of his top aides predicted during the Republican primaries, portraying himself as the defender of the middle classes, the saviour of Medicare (government health insurance for the elderly) and a champion of bi-partisan cooperation.

Mr Romney said he takes the reference to the "pursuit of happiness" in the Declaration of Independence to mean "that we care for one another. We are a nation that believes we are all children of God. We care for one another."

The darling of Wall Street, Mr Romney condemned the Dodd-Frank Bill, enacted under the Obama administration to regulate banking, as "the biggest kiss to big banks" and added: "I wouldn't designate five banks as too big to fail and sign blank cheques."

Mr Obama repeatedly portrayed Mr Romney's plan to cut income tax for all Americans by 20 per cent as a "$5 trillion tax cut" to which Mr Romney would add $2 trillion in increased military spending. "He has been asked a hundred times how he would close loopholes and deductions," Mr Obama said. "When you add them all up, they don't come to $5 trillion. The only way to meet Governor Romney's pledge is by burdening middle class families."

"I don't have a $5 trillion tax cut," Mr Romney stated baldly, though economists say that is what a 20 per cent across the board income tax reduction would mean. "There will be no tax cut that adds to the deficit… I will not under any circumstances raise taxes on middle income Americans."

Job creation, healthcare and the role of government were the main topics of the debate. Mr Obama said he had created five million private sector jobs, that "the auto sector has come roaring back" and the property market is recovering. Mr Romney stretched the jobless number to include those who have stopped looking, part-time employees who would like to work more and the under-employed, citing 23 million Americans who are out of work. He repeatedly said that the number of people on food stamps has risen from 32 to 47 millionn under Mr Obama. The job figures for September, to be released tomorrow, will constitute another big test for Mr Obama.

Mr Romney did not deliver the "one-liners" and "zingers" he reportedly memorised for the debate, but he turned one of Mr Obama's favourite themes – trickle-down economics – on its head, calling the president's policies "trickle-down government".

He promised that his five-point plan for energy independence, more trade, cracking down on China, better education and helping small business would "restore the vitality that gets America working again."

Mr Romney criticised Mr Obama for investing $90bn in green energy companies. "That would have hired two million teachers," he said. "About half of them went out of business. A number of them were owned by people who contributed to your campaign."

Perorations on Dodd Frank and Simpson-Bowles (a bi-partisan deficit commission whose recommendations were never taken up) were probably lost on most television viewers, but Mr Romney succeeded in appearing calm, presidential and in command of the facts. It was at the same time his biggest flip-flop and his best performance."

So...real content means nothing, but style is vital? Coherent facts and consistent policies mean nothing, but "appearing calm, presidential, and in command" means everything? ;-D Why am I not surprised?

It's total bullshit in either case. If elected, Romney will suck up to the big banks and the corporates, and the Republicans will celebrate. If elected (again), Obama will suck up to the big banks and the corporates, and the Democrats will celebrate. They will both meanwhile accuse the other guy of being what they both are: corporate servants.

And the public will vote for the one who "appears calm, presidential, and in command of the facts"....LOL!!!!!!!!

It's like watching Imperial Rome reeling drunkenly through its last decadent and corrupt days of decline.

Fine, but the last budget was passed on Jun 22, 2009 when the House, Senate and presidency were all three were controlled by Democrats.

Republicans have only had the House and that started in January, 2011.

I confess... *I'M* partisian.... to sanity, logic, truth, facts and reason.

In any debate... 'won' is an opinion on how you handled yourself and competed with your opponent. It often has little bearing on facts. (I once heard a guy manage to slip in.."remember, 7 out of 10 doctors leaves 3!", and his opponent didn't notice.)

Romney managed to be fast, clever, audacious and pointed... but as has been noted, not always factual.

Please show me the section where AlterNet (or Mother Jones, for that matter) do a similar job and debunk the lies told by Obama.

Snopes and FactCheck both have sections debunking each candidate's statments.

Perhaps I just missed the balancing statements by AlterNet.

Why do there have to be "balancing statements." True is true false is false.

It says a lot about your bias if you have 10 Obama "lies" pointed out for every 10 Romney lies. So if The President is only called out 5 times then the score is 5 to 5 for Romney because he got away with 5? Grow up!

One of the 10 items that AlterNet says is a lie is covered by FactCheck.org:

"Eastwood didn't phrase things as artfully as most other convention speakers. The often-used 23 million figure also includes 8.2 million who are employed in part-time jobs but say they are seeking full-time work, the so-called "under-employed." And it also includes another 2.5 million who say they would like a job and would take one, but haven't looked for one in the last four weeks."

{obviously concerning the "23 million unemployed" several people, including Romney, have used}

I mean, there's a reason why Romney won the debate... He came in with a bunch of lies and knew that with the 2 minute rule that he could lie his ass off and the forum was not set up so that Obama would be able to dissect them...

Good strategy...

May get him a bump but as the lies are exposed is going to hurt him in the long run...

Cheap trick...

Can't wait for the 2nd debate now... I mean, tomorrow would be fine... Obama will defeat Romney the next two debates...

This from the guy who started this thread and predicted that Romney would be declared the winner of last night's debate...

"The nameless powerbrokers who put him up for the job" (pdq referring to Obama)

Yeah...those nameless powerbrokers. Here's a little something about that, pdq. They are the people who put up both candidates and back both parties. Every time. They hardly care which one wins, because either one is already in their pocket, and either one will do, but what they do care about is this: Which one is presently more marketable to the American public? That is the one they will be most concerned about promoting in the final analysis, because that is what keeps the whole phony spectacle of the 2-party system going, and doing its real job, which is to divide, conquer, befuddle, and rule the American public through an empty-suit figurehead such as Obama, Romney or whoever else works at the moment.

It's theatre. If it's reasonably good theatre, it achieves the desired effect. Failed theatre would be when so many people see through the charade that hardly any of them consent to believe in it any longer.

That time has not arrived yet in the USA.

Some of those powerbrokers DO manage to skew the system and mess with things, but it is just not the case that they "have both (candidates) in their pocket". That implicitly implies a level of corruption that is just not supported by facts.

As to "winning" the debate... just remember, Romney has had several months of awkward, foot-in-mouth, careless remarks. So... Obama has one 'sorta' off-night and suddenly 'ol Mitt is labeled by some POLLS as a leader and competent manager of serious financial issues? HA!... I say... and HA! Thus, I'd rather see them lose, given the choice, than see their supporters get what they wanted. I don't like seeing that kind of political philosophy get any encouragement.

Obama's never earned anything in his life. His college degrees were awarded to him, his political offices were awarded to him, the freakin' Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to him. But last night he had to do a job of work, and he failed.

He's a creation of the CIA. His whole legal career is a lie. He proved that last night. No debate skills. He looked like a criminal, and Romney looked like the TV hero cop giving him the third degree. And Romney's a moron. Kind of like George W. Bush's big brother in a fraternity.

Both of those men should have been booed off the stage, but they weren't, and Romney tossed Obama from one turnbuckle to another. Obama needs to wear a mask next time, like some lucha libre wrestler. What an idiot.

Maybe the real powers that be (those behind the curtain and the throne) much prefer a race that seems pretty close to one that seems to be a forgone conclusion, therefore they did a little coaching to give Romney a bit of a boost? The coaching could involve, for instance, telling Mr Obama NOT to bring up the 47% and a whole bunch of other damaging stuff he could have brought up.

In other words, get Obama to behave in a rather lacklustre fashion for this round, thus re-energizing the Republican campaign, thus making the race "exciting" again.

It is a form of media entertainment, after all, and one doesn't want the excitement level of the public to dwindle, right?

So that could be it. Just a possible suggestion. Given the ruthless and combative nature of politics, it seems extraordinary that Obama would not have used some really obvious ammunition he could have to damage Romney, unless he was coached not to by some pretty persuasive voices.

In the last four election cycles, Republicans have been tied or had an advantage in the number of votes cast all but once.

The only year that Democrats had the avantage was in 2008 when their base thought their dream world would come true if they voted for Obama.

Even with the Republican advanatge and the strong majority of independants will be voting for Romney, polls in "swing sates" are being skewed at least 6% in favor of Democrats sampled, and some polls are skewed as much as 11%. These polls are run by NBC, New York Times and other sources that are supposed to be taken seriously.

Fact is, Ohio may be a "tossup" but nothing south of DC is. Romney is actually ahead in electoral votes if polls are unskewed.

There's no such thing as honest polls

September 21, 2012 By Dr. Kevin "Coach" Collins

{edited by me}

When he was asked how he thought history would treat him, Adolph Hitler said, "The victor will never be asked if he told the truth."

This "history be damned" attitude is alive and functioning within today's far Left American media. It makes no pretense about being honest, it just churns out Democrat propaganda.

And sad to say, it is being aided in its fraud by useful idiots on the Right who lend credibility to the Left's phony polls who report them without question. It is hard to tell who is more culpable in this daily assault on the freedom of the press, but since the Left is what it is, the Right would have to be held more responsible for the damage these fake polls do to the morale of the American people.

The under-sampling Republicans and over-sampling Democrats to force headlines to show Barack Obama is winning is now so rampant it almost seems like the product of a frat house prank. In this "prank" the "reporters" are being tested by the "pollsters" to see how far away from reality the sampling can go before someone finally asks a question or even reads the internal data of a poll before slavishly reporting it as truth.

How much of a sampling skew toward Obama can we take? Each new poll skew seems like a breath blowing up a balloon. Now polls are regularly skewed at least 10 points in favor of Obama. Some "polls" delivered with a straight face have used a Democrat projected turnout 13 points higher than the expected Republican turnout. No one questions this but just sheepishly reports what is ordered.

{edited by me}

Gallup has already been threatened with a lawsuit to get them to start issuing poll reports Democrats like. Gallup is not a stupid bunch. They know by Obama's Department of Justice can cut the legs off of them in a heartbeat so they have recently started to get in line.

Careful research shows that all genuine data items point to a smashing victory for Romney, but at this point it is hard to see the lying pollsters and compliant "reporters" saying this until the day after the Election.

pdq, I think the "history be damned" attitude you describe is equally apparent on both the Right and the Left these days. The USA's standard mode is "history be damned". The USA has repeatedly launched wars of choice against small, distant countries that offered no real threat to the USA. That's what Hitler was in the habit of doing, only he didn't reach quite as far beyond his borders as the USA does. Both the Democrats AND the Republicans have been repeatedly guilty of backing those pre-emptive wars of aggression. The only American politicians I know of who have resolutely opposed them are Dennis Kucinich (Democrat) and Ron Paul (Republican). The rest have all lined up dutifully and justified open and illegal aggression against other countries which were no threat to the USA...and occupation of those countries, apparently believing, like Hitler, that "The victor will never be asked if he told the truth."

Politicians in both your parties continually tell lies, mislead the public, and misrepresent themselves. This is totally obvious. Like Hitler and his ilk, they also believe that "The victor will never be asked if he told the truth."

It's standard behaviour in American politics. And you see it only on the Left???? You must be blind in one eye.

"And you see it only on the Left???? You must be blind in one eye."

You still don't get it.

I'm asking Left-leaners to accept the fact that their side is also lying.

That is why I asked for Top 10 Whoppers from Obama to balance the Top 10 Whoppers from Romney.

Open-minded people should be able to discuss both (=all) sides.

Not exactly, PeeDee- the Dems may be guilty of spin and bias, but when it comes to out-and-out lies, half-truths, distortion, and absolute 14-karat bullshit, the Repubs win half down.

Its a difference in kind, not in degree.

There is a difference in kind and intent and degree. The Romney plan was to "etchesketch" It was clever to wait until the debate. I will grant. But in effect Romney called himself a liar a half dozen times during that debate. Also, the we are not going to let the fact checkers run our campaign mentality.

and there is that whole thing where Romney told the FEC and the MA elections board that he was running Bain while he tells us that he wasn't. Romney's lies are so big that they deserve a much more majestic name "Epic legends" perhaps. It seems as though he is reading them from a gold tablet that only he can see.

Yeah, I think you're right about that, Jack.

A big problem with politics, I think, is that people tend to focus much more strongly on what they don't like than on what they do like...and they focus the most rigorously on the man they don't like! So...for Romney's supporters...they're not all that much concerned about closely examining what Romney says for its veracity. What they want to focus on is his criticism of Obama, and thing that are wrong with what Obama says, because the primary thing that really moves them is hatred of and contempt for Obama. So as long as Romney attacks Obama in a way that his supporters enjoy, that's all that really matters to them.

And I would venture to suggest that it works almost exactly the same way on the other side of the partisan divide. The real thing that's motivating Obama's supporters is their hatred of Romney, their contempt for him and his party, and their desire to see him lose.

Both sides concentrate mostly on denigrating the other side and sniping away at it, rather than on keeping their own side honest. Why would they put much energy into vetting what their own guy says when the main thing they want to happen is to see the other guy lose?

You realize of course, that polls are getting harder to do at all because so many people don't have land lines. Many young folks especially... who 'might' tend toward Dems... have only cell phones and don't answer polls.

Maybe someday they'll have a system where we VOTE by special cell phone code and skip all this guessing..... anything to get away from the electoral college nonsense will suit me!

Not at all, not even a little. Its the agenda of the GOP they are against. As their agenda gets more narrow and nutty the more and larger lies their candidates have to tell to win. Its not Romney's fault per se. It is just that he is only one slippery enough to have brought it this far. The election would be all but over now is some like Santorum, who is a firm believer in "conservative" principles was running. But "the well oiled weathervane" has a few turns left.

"Obama is ahead in the polls."

From Rassmussen this morning:
          Romney                49%,
          Obama                  47%
          "somebody else"    2%
          "undecided"            2%

"Both men have solidified their partisan base. Romney is supported by 89% of Republicans and Obama by 88% of Democrats. Among those not affiliated with either major party, Romney leads by 16.

The generation gap remains wide. Obama leads by double digits among those under 40. Romney leads by double digits among those over 40. "

Rasmussen changes 1/3 of the results each day.

The number I gave comes from data collected the 3rd, 4th and 5th.

Therefore 1/3 is still "pre-debate" data.

Check their site tomorrow morning for the real number.

I used to have a tape made on a mono Wallensak of my uncle playing jazz guitar and jamming with Erroll Garner, a good friend of his and fellow Republican. Made at his house after "a few". Lost it in a move years ago so I can't copy that onto a CD.

I'll send him a few odd CDs anyway, since I know how hard he will take losing.

Bobert, were I you I'd take the bet.

As an aside, a good friend of mine who lives in a south-western state of the USA is a small-business man. He is also as left of center as I am, meaning he's close to being a socialist. He's not voting for Obama because the new regulations regarding small businesses are breaking him. He expects to have to close down his business--something he's worked hard at for thirty-five or so years. The putrid organization known as the EPA--its new stature and authority redefined by Bush and carried further by Obama--has become an enemy of the people. I can sure see why Americans are having difficulties with this election. Prepackaged crap just don't cut it no more.

About the EPA, it was Carol Browner, a former Berkeley radical and dropout, who said that everything pollutes in one way or another therefore the EPA has a right to control...everything.

She may be the only member of Clinton's cabinet to serve the full 8 years. I could look that up but I don't really care that much.

Bobert, the EPA has done little about fracking, Alaska oil drilling, the big timber companies and their practices: please do NOT deify the fucking EPA to me. And neither Bush nor Obama has curbed that organization. They tell a small business man they can enter his business premises at a time of their choosing, no warrant required. My friend is in a non polluting business. WTF, is it any wonder he's not voting for Obama this time? All he wants is to get a fair shake and operate his business. Period.

The point is, both Bush AND Obama have allowed the EPA to shit on people while the EPA sucks at the tit of big business. My friend tells me that new regulations adhered to under the Obama administration have basically ruined him. So why would he vote for the guy who's helping put him out of work? While I still see Obama as the best choice, he no longer does. I cannot say I blame him.

"The politics just ain't right for sane environmental policies... We need to turn that around and soon or we'll all be fucked..."

Yeah. Meanwhile, Obama as did Bush before him backed off on the smog standard put forth by the EPA. Well, since oil and coal don't listen to us, let's get lots of threatening letters off to various Small Business Harry the Widget Makers and threaten them instead. Well, the threats worked and the price may be very expensive for the incumbent.

My friend voted for Obama in 2008 because Bush era crap had to go. With the help of Congress and the Oval Office, the EPA has become a good guy with no teeth. So either empower the EPA which seems to have got into a slugging match with small businesses because it can't do a damned thing against the big boys, or start at the top with bad polluters and work yer way on down.

WTF good is industry if no one can breathe?

#####################################

"According to OpenSecrets.org, the following data was recorded by the Senate Office of Public Records. The top 10 industries for 2009 were:

Pharmaceuticals/Health Products - $199,323,702
Insurance - $122,065,251
Oil & Gas - $120,669,855
Electric Utilities - $108,163,536
Business Associations - $92,696,817
Computers/Internet - $88,847,937
Misc Manufacturing & Distributing - $84,363,782
TV/Movies/Music - $77,861,927
Hospitals/Nursing Homes - $77,465,842
Education - $73,913,389"

I'm quite sure that many of the fifteen thousand registered lobbyists in Washington, DC are working for one or more of these people--and they are people now--well, persons. And maybe the above data tells us more than we want to know.
