In light of baseball's All Century team, I though it would be interesting to put together the All Century Ceilidh Band, filled with only the best vocalists & instrumentalists from Ireland, Scotland, and the Celtic fringe (Brittany, Galicia, Canada, United States, England, Australia, etc.)Would would be in it? Catergories probably should be: Vocalist, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, percussion (bodhran, drums, bones, etc.) fiddle, accordion, pipes (of all kinds), harmonica, bouzouki, mandolin, banjo, flute (including transverse flute, tin whistle, and low pipe), harp, any other you see fit to include!

How about nominations for the "Terminally Screwed Ceili Band" at the same time!

Mbo...you've set me thinking hard here...I'll be back.

As a Nova Scotian I don't feel I'm on the "celtic Fringe"....however... Donal Lunny is one of mt all century choices along with Mary Jane Lammond and Mickey Spillane. I look forward to seeing other choices.. We all forget some great people.

You can't forget:

Michael Coleman

Paddy Touhey

Seamus Ennis

Matt Molloy

Robbie O'Connell

Cathy Jordan

Michel O'Raighleagh

Jon Skelton

John Carty

Charlie Piggot

Eileen Ivers

Liz Carroll

Mick Moloney

Mike Rafferty

Hope that tides you over........ Oh yeah, and get rid of that "electric guitar" category, because (1) it has no place in a ceilli band and (2) you could make an All - Century Electric Guitar team in another thread!

HEY! What about Arty McGlynn and Dan Ar Braz and Soig Siberil and Dougie MacLean! These guys are great electric guitar players and I'd be bloody proud to have them in my band, no matter how the the purists describe a "ceilidh band." I don't know, maybe I should have called it the All Century Celtic Band, because SOME people are so defensive about tradition, they find no room in it for electric instruments (Eileen Ivers plays electric fiddle!)and consider it a travesty for an instrument associated with a *gasp* modern music to be included.

--Mbo (who wants electric guitars, electric bass, full drum sets, and sythesizers to used in Celtic music WITHOUT be criticized.)
