Subject: Looking For Good Slide Guitar Solo Tunes From: Mbo Date: 02 Nov 99 - 10:05 PM In my 'Music of the World's Peoples' class, we are now studying the history & evolution of the Blues. I told my teacher that I since I can play some acoustic slide guitar (with a piece of copper tubing) that I might play for the class. Does anyone know any Blues tunes that can be played well on a solo slide guitar? The only thing I can play is "Stormy Weather." BTW Is it possible to play anything in a standard C tuning when doing the slide guitar thing? --Mbo |

Subject: RE: Looking For Good Slide Guitar Solo Tunes From: ddw Date: 02 Nov 99 - 11:07 PM I do a fair number of slide pieces, my current favorite being a Tampa Red & Georgia Tom ditty called No Matter How She Done It. There are also a lot of Robert Johnson slide songs and others to check out are Taj Mahal, Bukka White and some of Joanne Kelly's stuff. I'm also working on a slide arrangement of Amazing Grace — just to run my bagpiping friends nuts.... cheers david |

Subject: RE: Looking For Good Slide Guitar Solo Tunes From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 03 Nov 99 - 01:40 AM It is hard to play slide with standard tuning. By tuning your bass and treble string to D instead of E, you can play Blind Willie Johnson's "God Moves on The Water", a song about the Titanic. You can also at least one of Mance Lipscomb's knife songs: "Motherless Children" Murray |

Subject: RE: Looking For Good Slide Guitar Solo Tunes From: Owlkat Date: 03 Nov 99 - 04:10 AM There are few things I like to listen to more than slide guitar. The neat thing about it is that almost any three or four chord song can be adapted to slide. So, you already know tunes that can be played slide style, so just get a little sideways and give them a try. You might be amazed at the possibilities, and the results. ;-)

Subject: RE: Looking For Good Slide Guitar Solo Tunes From: Brad Sondahl Date: 03 Nov 99 - 09:24 AM You can tune to DADF#AD. Rev. Gary Davis' Whistling Blues is a good little tune, even without the talk. Dust my Broom is a classic... Son House's Louise Magee I used to do as well... |

Subject: RE: Looking For Good Slide Guitar Solo Tunes From: Bill Cameron Date: 03 Nov 99 - 01:44 PM I play slide in standard tuning. It's not that hard if you know your scale patterns inside out and have an idea what note you're going to end on. You look for opportunities to play two strings side by side. It takes practice to get decent intonation when there's so much up-=and-down the strings, but its strictly a technique thing. And you don't have to play fast to sound good. (good thing that). I do it cause I'm lazy. Tried those open tunings for awhile, but there's too much brainwork in learning them up and down the fingerboard for this old dog. Bill Sorry, no idea what's a good tune. Except if you do 'Stormy Weather", expand your horizon to "Stormy Monday" ;>= |

Subject: RE: Looking For Good Slide Guitar Solo Tunes From: Dani Date: 04 Nov 99 - 08:13 AM I am the singer, not the slider, but get yourself a recording of Lynyrd Skynyrd's LEGEND and listen to "The Four Walls of Raeford". It'll give you a chill, with or without the slide guitar. |

Subject: RE: Looking For Good Slide Guitar Solo Tunes From: Llanfair Date: 04 Nov 99 - 04:14 PM My friend Simon says that you can use Keith Richards' tuning, which is open G, but the bass E string is tuned higher to (he thinks) F sharp. This gives a nice ringing sound to the chords, especially if your strings are a bit old. His favourite is " I can't be satisfied". I think it's high time my friend Simon got on the net!!!!!!! Subject: RE: Looking For Good Slide Guitar Solo Tunes From: Roger the skiffler Date: 05 Nov 99 - 06:04 AM If you can get hold of Fred McDowall's: record:"I do not play no Rock 'n' Roll" which must be out on CD by now Fred's introduction describes his style and he plays a snatch of "Amazing Grace". Many of his records include hymn tunes as well as blues. Love his sound. RtS |
