"power corrupts" or tends to..in all it's forms

Some genetic engineering is amazing & useful..... I have no idea how to restrain the idiots, anymore than I know how to supervise and restrain deceptive advertising.

Did not watch the video, but checked out the titles and opening graphs of several of the posts. Seeing the home page reminded me of Marlon Brando's line in The Wild One when asked what he was protesting, "What've you got?" Well, whatever they got can be found at that blog.

Unfortunate, JiK... Dr. David Suzuki speaks.

JiK... further, the film explores the fact that cross species genetic mutation is not "natural" and... well, without any more salesman's puffing... it's worth the watch. Just because the host site is "suspect" in yer mind does not preclude it's importance in and of itself.

BTW... I ain't gonna go Wildebeeste on anyone if they don't try to blame Obama for such research and practices.

we have remnant DNA in our chromosomes that came from viruses... gee, that may be why certain viruses are used to insert selectd genes...

we also have some lingering traces of genes that came from our close "cousin", the Neanderthals.

we have been interbreeding species of plants for thousands of years to produce various food crops. the most well known interspecies cross to occur in mammals are the mule & jenney ( term used to indicate which species is the mom & which the dad).

genetic manipulation is a tool that could be used to "restore" recently extinct species that have closely related relatives still extant.

but another useful tool frequently misused is the gun... so, cross your fingers... because the genie is out of the bottle.

That is the point I was trying to expose on the other thread, sciencegeek but I went Wildebeeste because the first post after the OP decided the thread should be about Obama's policies and now I can't read that thread.

Crossing one's fingers is only the start. Once they find a way to raise bees that can survive thier destruction of the bees, bee prices will be steep. And that is just one paranoid thought.

thank you, gnu

I've realized that life is more pleasant if you can avoid getting sucked in by the trolls.

My older cousin was involved in recombinant DNA research back in the early days of the program & it was always clear to me as an undergrad that molecular genetics would be the key to many medical advances. Bur also knew that the hands that hold the purse strings will control the research... sigh.

The biggest obstacle to finding real solutions are the strident voices from each side trying to out scream each other. It's more important for them to "make their point" than to find a solution- which usually involves compromise.

As a kid, I only knew a few others with asthma or food allergies. Everyone I knew lived on peanut butter & jelly sandwiches - usually on Wonder Bread. Far cry from today. My personal feeling is that the biggest driver for that is the fact that the solution to "clean drinking water" was waste water treatment plants that clean only part of the pollutants, leaving all the metabolic wastes from medicines similar products behind. Environmental factors are probably the prime cause for the current "epidemic" of metabolic disorders... and who knows how long it would take to restore a more benign situation.

Boy, am I all doom & gloom this morning... lol And I avoid blogs as a rule, preferring to look for info in areas that have some peer review or balance. Anyone can blog... and I don't have the desire to wade through it all to find the ones that actually have a clue. Life is too short. :D

mule and hinney - a jenny is a female donkey or female mule, the hinney is the reciprical cross of a mule.

actually... I meant to type jennet - brain fart moment all the way around...

it would be nice if we could edit post, but not the case. hit enter & you're committed.

but my point about cross species breeding is still valid.

I would love to tarpans restored in some fashion...

though the Heck breed was a good effort, using domestic breeds probably lost some genetic material along the way.

Research in this field will continue to advance. It cannot be stopped. Both good and bad results are possible, as with all scientific investigations.

Judgement will be required to decide which applications of the research will be beneficial.

Q... "Judgement will be required to decide which applications of the research will be beneficial."

Indeed. My question/ponderance is, it appears that we cannot trust large corporations like Monsanto to use such judgement. It is quite apparent that they have not done so in many cases to date. Hence my "paranoia". I also have a conspiracy theory that I believe to be entirely possible but posting such even as simply an idea for consideration and discussion would only bring out trolls and stalkers as it is rather akin to Ian Fleming's fantasy lit.

Well, apparently this administration trusts them, (see Monsanto rider notes)..but you say you trust this administration, and they represent you, don't they?

Don't they?

GfS

P.S. Don't worry, I'm note going to upset your thread with bringing up things that need thought.

i REMEMBER HEARING THAT THEY were experimenting with adding some gene from salmon to strawberries to increase the tolerance for cold and freezing temperatures...what other crazy schemes are they using for crossing up the genetic materials?
