Subject: THE SONG OF THE MILLENNIUM From: Bugsy Date: 09 Nov 99 - 12:17 PM a major TV station has just posted the results of a survey throughout Australia which has voted "Imagine" as the song of the millennium. Still, I would say a song would have to be at least a hundred years old to be in the running, and if there ARE any 900-1000 year old tunes still being played they would be "up there" automaticaly. But isn't "Sumer is acummin in" suppossed to be the oldest recorded song? and that's what, 1200"s? |

It should be something that lets us know where we have come from, and where the future may take us; something to signify the victory of the human race over the immense obstacles we have faced over the last 1000 years--it's been a long time since Brian Boru and Clovis I were European kings so many years ago--we've been through famine, plague, social injustice, slavery, ethnic cleansing, and other horrors to reach this place in history on our little planet as it silently spins in the deeps of time and space. Sure, there are still some bad things that we have not not conquered--but the new millenium lies ahead of us--another 1000 years to grow and prosper even farther on our hard road to make the world the best as can be conceived by our mortal minds. So...my song for the millenium would be the theme from "Star Trek: First Contact" by Jerry Goldsmith. It truly captures the triumph of the human spirit against overwhelming odds. --Mbo (who really DOES believe that the millenium starts on January 1st, 2001. I want my millenium to have 1000 years--all you other folks can have your 999 years, because it's the trendy thing to think.) |

But we can't fight the popular mood and the buildup that's occuring right now toward 2000. As to the song of the millenium, it's sooooooooo subjective. Ask any group of people under 30 what's the best rock and roll song of all time, and you'll get a selection heavily weighted in the past 20 years. Ask some older folks like me, and you might get a number of songs that are 30 or 40 years old. There certainly are some timeless songs, and I particularly like O'Carolan's 'Blind Mary'.. As to songs with words, I also like Barbara Allen... Davey... (:>) |

I think they speak for the past, the present and the future. But considering that a millenium IS a thousand years, "the" song of the millenium (IMO) would need to be one that has stood the test of time. If it hasn't lasted, or at least been revived, then it has flunked the test of time and fails as "the" song. Do I say what I think you understand? Am I meaning what you read? |

Dublin celebrated it's millenium in the 1980's, Iceland celebrated it's millenium in 1966. The year 2000 is an appropriate date to celebrate athe millenium IF your millenium started in 1 BC. Only those people locked into the Christian-focused concept of history are even paying attention to this whole thing (except for two other groups of people - those around the world with old computers and those who are cashing in on the Westerners (Euro/American/Australian mostly) who want a REALLY BIG PARTY) Personally I don't give a damn what the excuse for a party is - let's just HAVE one! pax yall |

One millenium = 10 centuries.
The first millenium, therefore, ran from 1 until 990.
Therefore, we are already 20 years into the millenium, and MISSED IT! Amazing what conclusions innumeracy will bring you to when you apply mathematical proof! --Charlie Baum

And the Y2k thing has given THIS year a special feeling...we will all be waiting to see what happens...then NEXT year we can relax and party! and somehow, having to remember to write '2' at the beginning of each check looms larger in a lot of folks eyes than some technical distinction about milleniums..(dont you remember watching the odometer in the car roll over?...more interesting than 20,001 miles!) |

These all blur together now of course. We wouldn't hear stuff like "Summer Holiday" now if sound recording hadn't been invented. Although church music was written down early (early = I don't know when but, well ,early) the old ballads were not. So they must be prime candidates. Barbara Allen perhaps: Greensleeves no - what does that tell us. 16th C "Summer Holiday" perhaps. I really like Ewan McCall's "Bring The Summer Home" but it's not been around long enough to pass the test. What about "Beaulamkin"? Dr John |
