Subject: SONG: Apple on a Tree
From: Matthew B.
Date: 14 Nov 99 - 10:10 AM

Does anybody besides my crusty old self remember a song that went:

I wish I was an apple on a tree
I wish I was an apple on a tree
If I were an apple on a tree
A girl'd come along and take a bite out of me
I wish I was an apple on a tree

Chorus:
Hi, ho, fiddle dee dee
I'll tell you what I want to be-e
Hi, ho, fiddle dee dee
I'll tell you what I relly want to be

The late Big Mama Thornton knew it. She adapted it for the first verse of her 'Swing it on home':

I wished I was an apple, hanging from a tree
How I'd love those sweet little men
Reaching out for me
Swing it on home, Big Mama, swing it on home

Sounds like Mole in the Ground - but then that song could have borrowed some lines out of your song

One verse goes
Wished I wuz a wolly bugy beeX3
If awuzza wolly buggy bee I'd live in a cherry tree
Wish I wuzza a wolly bugy bee.

Hi Matthew:

There is a great old actor named Gary Cooper who starred in the movie, "Along Came Jones". You'll find it in the classics section in video stores, it's charming. Anyway, Mr. Cooper sings that song in the movie.

Blessings

Great OLD actor? First time I've heard it put that way! I'm suspecting you're on the "not yet" side of 40. Gary Cooper sticks out in my mind for his fine performance in "High Noon", one of THE classic Westerns, and his SUPERB performance in the SUPERB film "Sergeant York", ostensibly a war movie but so much more. I don't believe I've seen "Along Came Jones", but I've no doubt it's charming. Thanks for the "nostalgia jog".

My Dad used to sing this song to us children but it included a squirrel, bee and a fox.

I WISH I WUZ (HI, HO, FIDDLE DEE DEE)
(Lyn Murray / Sid Kuller)

Rosemary Clooney - 1951
Teresa Brewer - 1951
Bob Hope, Bing Crosby & Monica Lewis - 1951

Hi-ho, fiddle-dee-dee
Tell ya what I'd like to be
Hi-ho, fiddle-dee-dee
Here is what I dream I'd like to be

I wish I was a swingin', clingin' vine
I wish I was a swingin', clingin' vine
If I was a swingin', clingin' vine
I'd only cling to the boy of mine
I wish I was a swingin', clingin' vine

Hi-ho, fiddle-dee-dee
Tell ya what I'd like to be
Hi-ho, fiddle-dee-dee
Here is what I dream I'd like to be

(Instrumental Break)

I wish I was a glass of sherry wine
I wish I was a glass of sherry wine
If I was a glass of sherry wine
I'd warm your heart till you were mine
I wish I was a glass of sherry wine

Hi-ho, fiddle-dee-dee
Tell ya what I'd like to be
Hi-ho, fiddle-dee-dee
Here is what I dream I'd like to be

I wish I was an apple on a tree
I wish I was an apple on a tree
If I was an apple on a tree
A boy'd come along, take a bite from me
I wish I was an apple on a tree

Hi-ho, fiddle-dee-dee
Tell ya what I'd like to be
Hi-ho, fiddle-dee-dee
Here is what I dream I'd like to be

Here is what I dream I'd like to be

Strangely enough the tune is still used in the UK on the football/rugby terraces to taunt the opposite fans when their team is losing.

Can you hear (team name)sing? No-o, no-o.
Can you hear ----- sing? No-o
Can you hear ----- sing?
I can't hear a f-----=g thing. No-o, no-o, no-o.

It seldom gets right to the last note. It's quite a folk survival if it stems from 1951 recordings.
