From: hans@datortek.pitea.se

Hi there! I´m searching for the lyrics to a song recorded by "The Dubliners" called "The Dundee Weaver". The first line goes something like this: "- Oh I´m a Dundee weaver and I come from bunny dundee". By the way, I have a lyrics database of app. 200 Irish folksongs. So if you´re searching for a lyric and can´t find it on the superb service " Digitrad" you can always try me out. My e-mail: hans@datortek.pitea.se By, By.
I moved this message here from another thread on the same topic.

I am trying to find the lyrics of a song entitled "The Dundee Weaver" - I have a recording on a tape by the Dubliners, but cannot make out all the words (the combination of Scottish dialect and strong Irish accents isn't the easiest thing to follow). Could anyone help?

Arthur Argo sang it on 'A Wee Thread O' Blue', Prestige- International 13048, and there's a version from Stewart Brown of Dundee in Nigel Gatherer's 'Songs and Ballads of Dundee', John Donald, Publisher, Edinburgh, 1986.

If you post what you've got so far, and indicate the parts where you're having difficulty, more people may be inclined to help.

Yes, follow Ed's suggestion. I can find neither song nor tune on Nigel Gatherer's website.

I am a Dundee weaver, I come frae bonny Dundee.
I met a lad frae Glasgow, an' he cam' courtin' me.
He took me oot a-walkin' doon by the Kelvin Haugh (ha'?)
And there the dirty wee snotter stole my thingamajig awa'.

He took me oot a-walkin' doon by the Rookin'(?) Glen.
He showed tae me the bonny wee birds an' he showed me the bonny wee hen.
He showed tae me the bonny wee birds, frae a linnet tae a craw.
He showed tae me the bird that stole my thingamajig awa'.

Sae I'll gae back tae Dundee, looking bonny, young and fair.
I'll pit on my bucklin' shoon, an' I'll tie up my bonny broon hair.
I'll pit on my corsets tight, tae mak' my body look sma',
And wha will ken by my rosy cheeks my thingamajig's awa'?

Sae a' ye Dundee weavers, tak' this advice frae me:
Never let a fellae an inch aboon yer knee.
And never stan' at the back o' yer close, or up against the wa',
For, if you dae, ye can safely say, yer thingamagig's awa'.

That's how I learned it from Robin Hall in London, 1958.

Sandy

Thanks. I should have thought to try that. I'm not at home to check now, but I think Nigel posts his site address as above, except starting at last slash as /music.html

Sandy, Arthur Argo said the he also learned it from Robin Hall.

Yes, Nigel Gatherer's URL is as I stated at the end (and incorrect), and his e-mail address doesn't work either, so I can't tell him.

I am a Dundee weaver and I come from bonny Dundee
One day I let a laddie an inch above my knee.
He took me oot a-walkin' by the Boorava (I think!) wall.
And there the dirty wee rascal stole my thingy majig awar
And there the dirty wee rascal stole ma thingy majig awar

He took me on a picnic by the brook and glen
He showed to me the bonny wee brook and he showed to me the glen.
He showed to me the bonny wee birds three rabbits and a crow.
And he showed to me the bird that stole my thingy majig awar.
And he showed to me the bird that stole my thingy majig awar.

Now I'll go back to Dundee, looking hale and slim
I'll put on my corsets and stays to make my body look thin.
I'll put on ma buckles and shoes and tie up ma bonny brown hair.
And no one will know by ma rosy cheeks ma thingy majig is no more.
And no one will know by ma rosy cheeks ma thingy majig is na more.

Now all you Dundee weavers take this advice from me
Never let a laddie an inch above your knee.
Never stand wi' your back t'a fence, or up against a wall.
For if ye do ye can safely say, your thingy majig is na more.
For if ye do, ye can safely say, your thingy majig is na more

N.B. that's as I remember it, Vince

I've sung this song since the 1960's, with lyrics essentially agreeing with Sandy's. It is indeed Kelvin Ha', not Haugh - the Kelvin Hall is a Glasgow auditorium; I sing "dirty wee rascal", not "snotter" (although I think I might change ... :); it's "Rouken Glen", a secluded walk in Kelvingrove Park; I've heard "goon (gown) o' green" instead of "bucklin' shoon", and the last two lines as: "Nor let him tak' ye doon a close, or up against a wa', For gin ye dae, ye may safely say yer thingumajig's awa'"
