Subject: Tune Req: Born Free A Heart Must Wander
From: Galloping Gwdihw

Hello folks, somebody wrote the lyrics to this song down in a Tanners Hatch YHA log book a long long time ago but I'm curious to know what it sounds like actually sung... does anyone know where I can find the tune, or better still, an actual recording of it, please?! Cheers x

Born free a heart must wander
Born free a heart must roam
Out there the hills over yonder
Seem to be calling me home

Out there a restless wind blows
That's where I long to be
I must go where the wind goes
Just like the wind, I was born to be free.

My heart has no chains
The world must be mine to explore
The hills and the plains
Are waiting just outside my door

Don't wait for my returning
There's much I must see
I must follow this yearning
Feed this fire that is burning
I was born to be free.

It might be a variant Don Black' s title song for the film "Born Free" 1966.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Explain (country, nearest city) Tanner's Hatch" hostel......and decade for "long time ago."

Song 200 on that site is named Born Free. I have no way to give it a listen. The song you want is a Girl Scout song which I think you've determined by now (if your name is Iris). It appears as a poem in a few spots and the lyrics don't differ from those you've presented. However, I have been unable to hear the song at that link. If you could check it out and yea or nay it, that would help narrow things down a bit.

Thanks for the replies, both. It's definitely not a variant of Don Black's 'Born Free' and the iTunes link links to a different song altogether from the one I'm trying to find... thanks for trying to help though! :)

@gargoyle: Sorry, I missed the bit in italics at the bottom of your post, lol.... Tanners Hatch Youth Hostel is near Dorking in Surrey, England, and I'd guess the decade "Born Free A Heart Must Wander" was written down in the log book was the 70's...

That's a hard poem to set to music, because it's irregular in meter and different lines are different lengths.   You can't just devise one or two themes and set the verses to them.

Don't know if anyone is still looking for the tune. I tried to recreate it from memory - Girl Scout camp 1969. This song left a big impression on me. Is this close to what you remember?

Here is the whole song fro what I could remember. The key might be wrong but try it- might spark a memory for you too. I used virtual piano.net to play

C25, G32,E29, F30 E29 C25, D27 C25, G32,E29, F30 E29, D27
Born free a heart must wander,    born free a heart must roam

C25, C37,C37,B36, B36,A34,G32, F30E29,F30,G32,C25,D27,E29,D27
Out there the hills over yonder seem to be calling me home

C25, G32,E29, F30 E29 C25, D27,
Out there a restless wind blows

C25, G32,E29, F30 E29, D27
That's where I long to be

C25, C37,B36, B36,A34,G32,F30,    E29,F30,G32,C25,D27,E29,D27,C25,B24,C25
I must go where the wind goes,       just like the wind, I was born to be free.

3rd Verse is very different, Not sure if this is the right key but you should be able to get the idea

G32,D39,C37,B36,C37,       G32,D39,D39,D39,D39,C37,B36,,C37,
My heart has no chains,      The world must be mine to explore

C37, C37,B36,A34,B36       B36,C37,B36,A34,A34,G32,A34,G32
The hills and the plains      Are waiting just outside my door

Last verse almost like 1st but the end is different.

C25, G32,E29, F30 E29 C25,   D27 C25, G32,E29, F30 E29, D27
Don't wait for my returning,    There's much that I must see

C25,C37,B36,B36,A34,G32,F30
I must follow this yearning

C25,C37,D39,D39,D39,C37,B36,A34
Feed this fire that is burning

C25,C37,D39,C37,B34,C37
I was born to be free.

Thanks for that,Lynne! Sorry about the slow response, this is the first time I've visited the Mudcat site for months!
Sadly, I don't play an instrument and can't read music, so can't descipher this on my own... will get a musical friend to help me, lol... Thanks again!!! xx
