Not in the UK anymore... but here's a link to an Aussie site set up by a friend, it might give you some ideas... Valda is a lovely person she might be able to give you some tips if you email her.....

Biographies and pictures of English folk performers? A central links page? A central gig list that clubs and performers can amend themselves? I suppose, however, that most of this will need agreement with other folk sites giving similar services. You've got the better address, though. Anyway, good luck and good ideas. Don Thompson, of my own club Hazlitt Folk (Maidstone, Kent, England) cherishes thoughts of a UK folk club and performer directory, online. So far we have got as far as a so far fairly minimal website at http://website.lineone.net/~hazlittfolk which will be growing!

Jabo, what do you mean by a UK Mudcat? I like the idea of a site that contains details of venues, info on performers and links that is relevant to the UK but I am not sure that I like the idea of say another lyric database or discussion forum...

Re servers, as far as I uderstand it, a lot depends on what you want to do. I have free web space provided my my ISP that is on line all the time but it is only useful for putting up wep pages etc. i.e. using their HTML server.

For some tasks, you need some programming and processing power from the server. I recently wrote my own chat program. There is no way that that can work from my web space but using web server software, I can use my PC as a server and let that do the necessary message handling. With something like mudcat, even the web pages for the threads are created on demand and again, to the best of my knowledge would require sever end programming to be achieved.

The Mudcat is several things at present.

It's got the DT.

It's a global village, which I'm pleased to be part of, and have no intention of leaving. Part of this is primarily about music, part is is about other things as well, and I think both aspects are important.

But for people within certain parts of North America, it's also a link between people who know each other face to face, and a mechanism through which they can organise musical activities etc.

I think that there could be a place for a site which combined being a miror site for DT, with links to the Mudcat forums, but which provided a mechanism for people in the island of Great Britain, and maybe also within the island of Ireland, to focus on things that were more immediately relevant to us. So there'd be links and information about website with relevant information, and other sources of information as well; and there'd be some way by which threads could be imported and exported.

Yes, McGrath of Harlow, it is I - busy this week, but will see you at the Small Copper next week. I'll be at the Square Monkey, Rayleigh Arms, Terling on Friday. Lots of squeezeboxes there, though. Lots of stringless guitars with skin tables, too!

I think this idea has real possibilities. I spent last evening surfing looking for UK info about this year's festivals. It was very fragmented, and some hadn't been updated for months. Go for it!!!!! Bron.
