It was written by Jack Hardy. Recorded by him on Landmark, around 1980, available in The Collected Works of Jack Hardy, Part 1, Volumes 1-5, from 1-800-Prime-CD. Lui Collins recorded it quite some time ago. I don't know if the album is available. It was also recorded by Diane Taraz on Songs of Jack Hardy, Volume One, Of the White Goddess. It was on BCN Records, which I believe no longer exists, so I don't know if it's available. Quite possibly the artists have some copies (Taraz, Pendragon, Jem Moore, Ariane Lydon). Try a web search for these artists and e-mail them about purchasing their recordings.

Ah, Clinton, I love a good challenge...told ya it was my specialty. **BG** Nice song, would love to ehar the tune. Here ya go, from his official website, which has all of his lyrics, www.jackhardy.com. There are some soundclips there, but not of this song.
THE TINKER'S COIN

Come all ye lads and lasses near
A story I will tell to you
About a cold damp night like this
When shelter I was seeking
A traveler passing through

The barkeep said to guard my coin
To stay away from this tinker
But that just brought me near to him
For naught had I worth taking
A traveler passing through

Well he bought me glass of darkened stout
To thank me for my company
And he dropped a penny in the glass
For the luck that it would bring to me
A traveler passing through

The poor have but their pennies left
The king his saxon shilling
The king would never part with his
Though I part with lime most willing [This is me, kat--I think that must be a typo? Should be with "mine"?)
To a traveler passing through

chorus:

This coin's been haunted by the sidhe
It shall bring you joy or bring you grief
Depending on the works you do
What once was mine now belongs to you
To a traveler passing through

And we passed the night most forcefully
I sang my songs and his to me
And we talked of life's brief song to sing
Of visions we'd forsaken
As travelers passing through

And the barkeep said it's time with scorn
Your man here will be your undoing
They will lock you up as sure as you are born
If they hear the songs you're singing
A traveler passing through

Well they can lock me up as best they can
Yet songs can never know those chains
The song is sacred as the wind
We are just the harp that's singing
A traveler passing through

And later in a highland pub
With friends around me singing
I chanced to glance into my glass
At another penny shining
A traveler passing through

Dear Clinton,

I'm pretty sure that I have that Lui Collins album on vinyl. I'm going to annap's in the morning, so I need to go to bed now. I will be back Monday. You can message me via mudcat, or email me at marymac90@aol.com However, I'm a techno-peasant, so I don't know all these fancy ways of getting music over these little wires. I could make you a tape, or play it over the phone... You are right, it IS a beautiful song. She's a great singer-I wish she performend and recorded more. Be in touch with me next week.

Best regards,

Mary McCaffrey

With Frank in Toledo's clues, I was able to find a midi of it at a Sing Out site, here

It's not MP3, but I hope that helps, anyway.

Hate to let the sun go down
With something unfound!

I'm so excited. I've been looking for the lyrics to this song for the last ten years. I heard a young woman sing it at a local song swap and then she never came back. It has been that mysterious song that has eluded me all of this time and I have been dying to sing it. Does anyone know the chord progression?

For those who may be interested, here is my attempt at figuring out a simple version of the chords:

The Tinker's Coin by Jack Hardy

Intro:
Em D / C D / C Bm /
C Em / D C D

C                            D
Come all ye lads and lasses near
   C                   D
A story I will tell to you
   C                         Bm
About a cold damp night like this
      C             D C
When shelter I was seeking
    D                C    G
A traveler passing through

(chorus:)
    Em                         D
This coin's been haunted by the sidhe*
          C                           D
It shall bring you joy or bring you grief
    C                      Bm
Depending on the works you do
      C                   D       C
What once was mine now belongs to you
      D                C
To a traveler passing through

If Bm is too hard for you this works fine with Bm7. I also don't see any issue with dropping the G at the end of the verse.

I will also post a new thread on this topic.

The spacing on the chords didn't post perfectly. The chord changes are on the last word of each line. The added "G" at the end of the verse is after the last word of the line.
