Johnny Bond recorded and had a big hit with this country song about what happens when Dad leaves the house in the morning. Originally recorded for the Starday record label the track has been reissued on CD on one or two compilations from the people who bought the Starday catalogue. (Gusto)

Subject: Popular song circa 1940
From: bfrey@mail.bbsnet.com
Date: 27 Jul 97 - 05:00 PM

A song I recollect (part of) from my childhood. Very popular for a short while. Surprised that it was on juke-boxes then, and that I was not chastised for singing it around the house. Probably nobody listened. Chorus: "There's a man who comes to our house every single day. Poppa come home and the man goes away. Oh, Poppa does the work and Momma gets the pay, And the man comes to our house every single day."

It goes through the days of the week, with the man in a different guise each time. All I remember now is that on Wednesday he comes "in a little white jacket and a little black moustache" and that's when he come to "take away the trash". Pretty funny song. I'd like to know the rest of it. Bill Frey

This is a song that my father sang when I was a kid in the late 40's. I have three verses and a chorus. Does anyone have any more? I seem to remember that he sang a lot of verses.

THE MAN THAT COMES TO OUR HOUSE

There’s a man that comes to our house every single day.
Papa comes home and the man goes away.
Oh, papa does the work and mama gets the pay,
And the man comes around when papa goes away.

Oh, the man that comes to our house, he comes to bring the milk.
He comes up to the door and he talks as smooth as silk.
I always have to hold his horse outside the gate.
And the man he stays so doggone long and the horse don't wanna wait.
CHO.

Oh, the man that come to our house, he comes to bring the ice.
He walks right in the kitchen and he talks so awful nice.
But the little piece of ice he brings soon melts away,
And the man he has to come again later in the day.
CHO.

When I grow up, I don't wanna be
A doctor or a lawyer. No siree.
Don't want a fancy car or an office in the town.
I just wanna be the man that comes around.
CHO.

Thanx

The old record by the Blue Violet Boys! There are two more verses.

The man who comes to our house comes to sell a brush
He comes in a hurry but he leaves in a rush
And every time he goes away, mama's in a fit
If she doesn't get everything she thought she ought to get.

CHORUS

The man who comes to our house drives a Cadillac.
He drives round the corner and parks it in the back.
When mama runs to the door, he's always there to greet her
With "Open up, honey bun, and let me read your meter."

From: GUEST
Date: 14 May 03 - 01:09 PM

The song was recorded in the 1940's by Tommy Tucker's band.
Here's the way I remember the verses along with one that is missing.

MAN WHO COMES AROUND
(Green/Lair/Tucker)

CHORUS: There's a man that comes to our house every single day.
Papa comes home and the man goes away.
Oh, papa does the work and mama gets the pay,
And the man comes around when papa goes away.

1. Oh, there's a man that comes to our house; he comes to bring the milk.
He walks right in the kitchen and he talks as smooth as silk.
I always have to hold his horsey out by the gate,
Because the milkman stays so awful long the horse don't wanna wait. CHO:

2. There's a man that comes to our house; he comes to take the trash,
In a little white jacket, and a little black moustache.
It's all very strange, but it always seems to me
That he's a little more familiar than the trashman ought to be. CHO:

3. There's man that come to our house; he's very nice.
He comes in the summertime to bring my Momma ice,
But the little teeny weenie piece soon melts away,
And he has to come back again later in the day.

4. Now when I grow up, I don't wanna be,
A banker or a carpenter, no siree,
I don't want to be a doctor with an office downtown,
Oh no, I want to be just THE MAN WHO COMES AROUND!

From: Dewey

There's also a follow up song for this this one, (i.e. THE ANSWER to the man that comes around) done by tucker time.

The answer:

The Man Don't Come to Our House Anymore

The man that came to our house
That used to bring the ice.
He was the niceset ice man that ever brought our ice.
But he came so very often, when my Pappa wasn't there,
That Pop put out a "No Ice Sign" and bought a Frigidaire!

Chorus:

Oh, the man don't come to our house anymore
He used to come around, and knock upon the door,
We still live where we always did before,
But the man don't come to our house anymore

On the man that came to our house
that used to bring the milk
He walked right throught the door
'cause he talked as smooth as silk.

.... sorry, can't remember the rest

I had a recording for both the original and the answer, done by tucker time, but I misplaced it after moving out of an apartment, many years back.

The Online Discographical Project says THE MAN DON'T COME TO OUR HOUSE ANYMORE was recorded by Tommy Tucker Time in 1940. (That was the A-side; the B-side was BEER BARREL POLKA by Lawrence Welk!)

It also says The Sweet Violet Boys recorded THERE'S A MAN THAT COMES TO OUR HOUSE in 1937.

Here's how the song is sung by The Yonder Mountain String Band. You can hear their version at The Internet Archive if you have Winamp installed.

THERE'S A MAN THAT COMES TO OUR HOUSE

CHORUS: There's a man that comes to our house ever' single day.
Papa comes home and the man goes away.
Oh, papa does the work and mama gets the pay,
And the man comes around when papa goes away.

1. The man that comes to our house, he's very nice.
Comes in the summertime, brings Mama ice.
But the little piece of ice he brings soon melts away,(*)
Ice man comes back later in the day. CHORUS

2. The man that comes to our house comes to sell a brush,
Comes in a hurry, leaves in a rush,
And ev'ry time he goes away, Mama's in a pet,
Didn't get ev'rything she thought she ought to get. CHORUS

3. The man that come to our house drives a Cadillac,
Runs around the corner and parks it in the back.
Mama comes to the door, he's always sure to greet 'er
With "Open up, Honeybunch. Let me check your meter." CHORUS

4. When I grow up to be a man, I don't want to be
A plumber or a janitor, no siree.
Won't be a doctor with an office downtown.
I'd rather just be the man that comes around. CHORUS

[*This line is mostly unintelligible so I just used the line that Troll posted above.]

Have most of this right, but not 100%

There's a man that comes to our house and he's quite a jitterbug.
He cuts it on the carpet and he cuts it on the rug.
He cuts it in the hallway and he cuts it on the floor,
When Poppa comes home he cuts it out the door

This song was a favorite in our house when I was a child, my older sisters would sing it. Something reminded me of it, and I went on line to see if I could find the lyrics, since I could only recall the chorus and some bits and pieces. I was so delighted to find this site! Thank you all who contributed. It was wonderful to have some happy memories brought back while reading this. (At some point in time, I think I heard all the verses mentioned here!)

See the link given by GUEST,Dave above. Here's my transcription

THE MAN WHO COMES AROUND
As sung by Will Osborne & His Slide Music, 1940

1. There's a man who comes to our house ever' single day.
Pappy comes home and the man goes away.
I asked the man his name and, queer as it may sound,
He told me he was just the man who comes around.
The man who comes around, the man who comes around,
He told me he was just the man who comes around.

2. [CHILD'S VOICE] The man who comes to my house he comes to bring the milk.
He walks right in the kitchen and talks as smooth as silk.
I always have to hold his horsie out by the gate,
'Cause he always stays so long, the horsie hates to wait.

CHORUS: There's a man who comes to our house ev'ry single day.
Papa comes home and the man goes away.
Papa does the work and Mama gets the pay.
The man comes around when Papa goes away.

3. The man who comes to my house isn't such a dope.
He rings the bell and says, "I hope, I hope, I hope."
I know that he's a salesman by the way he steps inside.
He never sells a single thing but walks out satisfied. CHORUS

4. [ELMER FUDD VOICE] Greetings ...(?) I'm never gonna be
A carpenter or a plumber, no siree.
I'll never be a doctor with an office downtown.
I'm gonna be just the man who comes around. CHORUS

5. [POSH BRITISH VOICE] The chap who's coming to my house had better watch his footing
For if he isn't careful, he's going to get a booting.
He comes and goes so quickly, the neighbors all declare
That he must be surely the little man who wasn't there. CHORUS

6. The man who comes to my house comes to fix the phone.
He brings his tools with him but he always comes alone.
And just before he leaves the house, I guess I ought to mention,
He goes upstairs to Mammy's room and fixes her extension. CHORUS

My father was an anti-tank gunner stationed on Stirling Island in the Treasury Group in the war. There were Catalina PBY flying boats in Blanche Harbour between Mono and Stirling Islands. This is what he wrote in his diary:

A ship is at anchor permanently as a tender for the flying boats, its name is the "Coos Bay".

The flying boat tender has an amplifier or an electric gramophone (…a gramophone and amplifier on board) and it's pretty loud – we can hear the music from here and it's pretty good. (They thrash one song, "There's a man comes to our house every other day, Poppa isn't home, so the man comes to stay." How true in America these days.)

Old Song:

Oh! the man don't come to our house anymore,
he used to come around and knock upon the door,
we still live where we always lived before
but the man don't come to our house anymore.

Then it talks about the man brings ice. milk, bread and butter.

Different versions of this one probably exist, but I transcribed these words directly from the old 78. Someone wrote "36" on the flip side, so it may have cost 36c when my mother bought it many years ago.

THE MAN DON'T COME TO OUR HOUSE ANYMORE
By Tommy Tucker Time; Vocal Chorus by Kerwin Somerville
Okeh 5717 (W 28039)

CHORUS
Oh, the man don't come to our house anymore;
He used to come around and knock upon the door.
We still live where we always did before,
But the man don't come to our house anymore.

The man that came to our house that used to bring the ice;
He was the nicest ice man that ever brought our ice.
But he came around so often when my papa wasn't there
That Pop put out the "No Ice" sign and bought a Frigidaire!

CHORUS

The man that came to our house to bring us eggs and butter;
He couldn't talk so very good; he always had to stutter.
It seemed a shame he had to go; I always wondered why.
I guess because it took so long for him to say, "Goodbye."

CHORUS

The man that came to our house that used to bring the milk
And walked right in the kitchen 'cause he talked as smooth as silk.
He liked my mama very much and brought her a corsage,
And now we've got a Jersey cow that lives in our garage.

CHORUS

Now when I get big and get to go to school,
I want to learn a few things so I won't be a fool.
But before I learn my A-B-Cs or how much is a pound,
I'm gonna ask the teacher why the man don't come around.

CHORUS

Easy, Lad; easy!

I wonder why—wonder why—why the man don't come to our house anymore.
