I am trying to find any recordings of The Brown Girl. The version I want is in the Mudcat Database. It's the one that starts "When first to this country, I came as a stranger . . . "

I can't find it anywhere. It isn't the same words or melody as on Steeleye Span's Rocket Cottage.

The one I want was collected in Canada by Creighton, as far as I know.

Any available covers of this version? Thanks!

Skylark recorded it on 'Light and Shade' in 1992, with Len Graham singing. That might still be available. - Susanne

Perhaps you mean the folk song variants of Fair Ellender and the Brown Girl? This is a traditional Appalachian ballad. Mike Seeger has a nice version of it. There are many variants.
