Subject: Recordings of The Brown Girl From: GUEST,Sean Date: 01 Mar 00 - 01:13 PM I am trying to find any recordings of The Brown Girl. The version I want is in the Mudcat Database. It's the one that starts "When first to this country, I came as a stranger . . . " I can't find it anywhere. It isn't the same words or melody as on Steeleye Span's Rocket Cottage. The one I want was collected in Canada by Creighton, as far as I know. Any available covers of this version? Thanks! |

Subject: RE: Recordings of The Brown Girl From: GUEST,Frank Hamilton Date: 04 Mar 00 - 06:14 PM Perhaps you mean the folk song variants of Fair Ellender and the Brown Girl? This is a traditional Appalachian ballad. Mike Seeger has a nice version of it. There are many variants. Frank |
