Heard about half of this tune at a jam; I think it's either from the western or midwestern US. Does anyone know it?

I know I've heard it and loved it when I did, but it's out of my head now. When I go home I'll check the Fiddler's Fakebook.

Aloha,
Mark

Would appreciate that tremendously. I rarely hear waltzes that I *must* learn. [Even if it's not in the fakebook, thank you for the effort].

Just to save someone else the effort I've given the ABC Web Search a fair flogging - without success, but have yet to try the site which provides the biblio references. Cheers, John

The following information comes from the Fiddlers Companion serch site for fiddle tunes. If the tune you are seeking is indeed a waltz I.m not sur how much help this will be.>P?

FLYING INDIAN [1]. AKA and see "Wild Indian." Old-Time, Breakdown. USA, southwestern Va. G Major (Phillips, Spandaro): F Major (Shelor). Standard. AABB (Phillips): AA'BB' (Spandaro). Source for notated version: Danny Gardella [Phillips]. Phillips (Traditional American Fiddle Tunes), 1994; pg. 90. Spandaro (10 Cents a Dance), 1980; pg. 32. Rounder 0057, Claris & Joe Shelor (Meadows of Dan, Patrick County, Va.) - "Old Originals, Vol. 1" (1978).

FLYING INDIAN [2]. American, Reel. The melody appears in George P. Knauff's Virginia Reels, volume IV (Baltimore, 1839).

WILD INDIAN. AKA and see "Flying Indian." The title Babe and Tump Spangler (Patrick County, southwest Va.) knew the tune by.

Hmm--looks like another case of too many overlapping titles. Yeah, this was definitely a waltz. Thanks, though.

Sorry, Ely, it's not in the Fiddler's Fakebook. However, my not always reliable memory tells me that it _may_ be on one of several tapes I made at the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in 1989 or 1990. If that turns out to be true, and if I can find it (a very big if), I will send you a message so I can get your address to send you a copy of the tape. Here's hoping somebody else comes up with it first. As I recall, it's a really beautiful tune.

Aloha,
Mark

Mark, I'm using a different computer and the dumb thing won't let me email you directly. I just got the tape and I thank you SO much, it's just what I was looking for.
