Subject: Wow, whatta week From: Banjer Date: 25 Mar 00 - 11:54 PM Whatta week this has been music wise! Wednesday night I went to a local jam session, didn't sit in, just listened. Mostly Bluegrass and Folk at that one. Thursday night, went to hear a show by a group called Celtic Rhythm, a combination music and dance troupe from Ireland at our local music hall. Saturday, (just got back) our group of reenactors did a Civil War time line at the Dunedin, Florida annual Tattoo. Lots of bagpipe music, massed Pipe and Drum bands, the U.S. Marine band from Parris Island was there and we heard some real good music. I'm still all astir from the Marine Band playing the Marine Corp Hymn. The massed pipe and drum playing Scotland the Brave and the lone piper doing the first verse of Amazing Grace and the entire masssed group joining in on the last two brought a tear to my eye, for sure. What a wonderful week it's been....Just had to share it with somebody that can appreciate how I feel....(Tell the kids about it and all ya get is "Yea, great, what's here to eat?) |

Subject: RE: Wow, whatta week From: jeffp Date: 26 Mar 00 - 12:39 AM Damn, Banjer, that sounds like a fine week! What side do you do in the reenactments? I used to do Confederate infantry. Spent 6 years, including 4 as a chaplain. Enjoyed it, but ran out of time. jeffp |

Subject: RE: Wow, whatta week From: Banjer Date: 26 Mar 00 - 07:24 AM Yessir, Leej, went all the way from hearing some 'home made' country gospel on Wednesday night to the Marine Band and a massed pipe and drum band involving some 6 schools, and two city bands. This whole event took place on the football field at Dunedin High School and the massed band covered the width of the field from the 25 yard line at each end!! Jeffp, we are equipped to portray both Union and Confederate Infantry AND Artillery. Last night we portrayed Confederate Artillery. Our Union Artillery impression is 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, the Confederate Artillery is Rockbridge Light Artillery, Virgina. If we do infantry we usually go with 97th Pennsylvania Volunteers for Union or 8th Florida Rifles for the Confederate impression. We try to do about one event a month, sometimes more. The reenacting 'season' runs from September to April for us. The hotter months we can't get real excited about those wool uniforms! |

Subject: RE: Wow, whatta week From: Caitrin Date: 26 Mar 00 - 09:38 AM Civil War reenactments are awesome! I can't imagine being in that uniform when it's hot, though. I recall going to one at Ft. Macon (at the beach) in the middle of a North Carolina summer. (Between 85 and 110 degrees, humid as heck) I was very glad not to be in a wool uniform. |

No one of us could possibly do and be all these different places and events and experiences around the world........Whadda' week General!!!!.......and thanks for the "experiences." Spaw |

Subject: RE: Wow, whatta week From: Rick Fielding Date: 26 Mar 00 - 12:08 PM Banjer, great story. I can relate. Sometimes you just have to tell someone (that's why I put the "Ronnie gilbert" thread in) who's clued in to what really makes us happy. Mudcat still works well for that kind of thing. I value it. Subject: RE: Wow, whatta week From: Mooh Date: 26 Mar 00 - 12:46 PM Banjer, envy it is, among other sins...don't you just love it? All at once I feel envy of you and some other indescribable ineffable (?) feeling but ya know, I'll have a week like that too, soon. Mine will be in August throughout the Celtic College and Festival in Goderich Ontario, that's a given, but I'll have others too. I know how you feel, you lucky dog. The aftermath of mine are like some kinda weird reverse hangover. If only we could make it last all year long. One time I took the family camping and happened into a folk festival quite by chance where I bumped into old friends and a War of 1812 re-enactment which passed by as we emerged from the van. My dog freaked out that day too. Tanglefoot played till people dropped from the buzz of it all. Thanks for reminding me...Enjoy your buzz...Mooh. |

Subject: RE: Wow, whatta week From: Mbo Date: 26 Mar 00 - 01:35 PM Sounds great Banj! My mom knew I was going to be a music lover even before I was born! She was at attention in her USMC unit as the Marine Corps Band marched by...I started bouncing around in her stomach, in time to the bass drums! Of course, you all know the Marine Corps Hymn music is by Jacques Offenbach, from the operetta "Genevieve de Brabant"? Ah...I know the USMC hymn like the back o' my hand! With both parents former Marines, you get to know it well! Wow...I would have loved to hear the pipers! But blast I wish they'd play something OTHER that Scotland the Brave! Like the Atholl Highlands or something! --Mbo |
