Subject: Sundown (1930's radio theme) From: GUEST,Marti Date: 26 Mar 00 - 03:46 AM I hoping someone out there can help me find a copy of or the lyrics to a song called Sundown. It was used as a theme for my grandfathers radio program in the late 1920s and 1930s New York. That's all the info my father has (no artist or record label). All he has are some lyrics he remembers (lyric searches have come up empty). Marti e-mail: Martib1215@aol.com |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lyrics to Sundown 1930's radio theme From: Art Thieme Date: 26 Mar 00 - 06:24 PM Bascom Lamar Lunsford did "Sundown"---at least that's what he called it. George and Gerry Armstrong did it on Folk Legacy. I, also, have it on an LP for Folk Legacy. But what are the few words you do know?? Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lyrics to Sundown 1930's radio theme From: GUEST,Marti Date: 26 Mar 00 - 10:15 PM Thanks everyone for your interest in helping! The lyrics are (with help from my father and a friendly e-mail from a kind stranger):
Every little breeze is sighing of love undying at sundown. Is this the same song by Bascom Lamar Lunsford or George and Gerry Armstrong? If so, can you give me the record labels? My dad would like to buy the record for "posterity." He lives on a 2 acre "ranch" that he has named Sundown in memory of his father's radio show. Marti |

Subject: Lyr Add: AT SUNDOWN (Walter Donaldson) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 02 - 11:43 PM AMG/All Music Guide lists 110 recordings of "At Sundown". San Joaquin Valley Library System has a copy of the sheet music for a song called EVERY LITTLE BREEZE IS SIGHING (AT SUNDOWN). (Click here for information about how to borrow it from them.) Following lyrics copied from http://www.spiritofsinatra.com/pages/Lyrics/a/At_Sundown.htm With additional information from http://www.thepeaches.com/music/frank/AtSundown.txt AT SUNDOWN (Walter Donaldson, 1927) Sunbeams are gently fading, slowly fading, And birds are waiting to do their mating, When eventide is nigh, moonbeams are descending, The day is ending, a happy ending, The sun is sinking below the western sky. CHORUS: Every little breeze is sighing of love undying at sundown, Every little bird is resting and feather-nesting at sundown. Each little rosebud is sleeping while shadows are creeping, In a little cottage cozy, the world seems rosy at sundown Where a loving smile will greet me and always meet me at sundown. I seem to sigh, I'm in heaven, When night is falling and love is calling me home. Daydreams through fields of clover, will soon be over, And happy hours 'mid sunny flowers will wait another day, Sweet dreams have just begun, dear, the day is done, dear, When skies grow dimmer, And stars will glimmer along the starlit way. [From the Film: The Joker Is Wild Label: Paramount Pictures Recorded (by Frank Sinatra): October 3, 1956 Originally made famous by: (1) Cliff Edwards (2) George Olsen.] |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sundown (1930's radio theme) From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 09 Dec 02 - 06:48 AM I have a wonderful instrumental version of this song on tape by Harry Reiser and His Cliquot Club Eskimos. Reiser played plectrum banjo. I'll see if I can track it down... my tape collection is messed up since I moved last year. If I can find it, do you want a copy, on tape? Cliquot Club is a brand name of seltzer water and sodas which is probably still around.. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sundown (1930's radio theme) From: GUEST,Marti Date: 09 Dec 02 - 06:05 PM Thank you everyone for you help. Jerry and Jim, you're very kind to reply to such a very old question! I purchased the CD by the original artist from the actual radio show (I've already forgotten her name, but there is a movie starring Doris Day about her career) for my dad's birthday in 2000, thanks to the help of other kind people who replied and he was very excited to receive it. (I didn't know that Frank Sinatra also did the song. I'll ask Dad if he's interested in that one, too). I did, however, lose the file I had of the lyrics and he was asking me for a copy, so Jerry, your reply was extremely helpful (now I don't have to listen to the CD over and over again while trying to remember my shorthand LOL)! Thanks again, everyone! Marti |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sundown (1930's radio theme) From: JohnInKansas Date: 09 Dec 02 - 08:21 PM The lyric of the chorus above doesn't scan to the melody I recall. From The Real Little Book, Hal Leonard, ISBN 0-7935-2942-8 AT SUNDOWN Words and Music by Walter Donaldson Copyright 1927 (Renewed) by Donaldson Publishing Co. Ev-ry little breeze is sighing of love undying At Sundown Ev'ry little bird is resting and feather nesting At Sundown Each little rose bud is sleeping While shadows Are creeping In a little cottage cozy, the world seems rosy At Sundown Where a loving smile will greet me and always meet me At Sundown I seem to sigh, I'm in Heaven When night is falling and love is calling me home. Not much different, but adding the "undying" makes it agree with the tune I remember. No verses given in this fake book. John |
