Subject: Reason to be cheerless -part one From: Linda Kelly Date: 27 Mar 00 - 03:42 PM Sad news today -Ian Drury has succumbed to cancer at the age of 59. Ian and the Blockheads were notable in the '70's for 'Hit me with your rythmn stick' and invented the phrase 'Sex and drugs and rock and roll' - he was the intellectual punk,a master showman and did not even let polio disable him. God Bless you Ian, wherever you are. |

Subject: RE: Reason to be cheerless -part one From: Amos Date: 27 Mar 00 - 03:46 PM Dear Ickle, Let us be sobered, perhaps saddened, but never cheerless. For one thing, he is no longer fighting a cruel disease. For another, he may well come back as the founder of another rock movement! A |

Subject: RE: Reason to be cheerless -part one From: Helen Date: 27 Mar 00 - 04:20 PM Sad to hear this. I always liked his music, and I thought he was a great role model - he just was *himself* with no need to act out roles other people would like to impose on him. I saw a bio-documentary of him, narrated by him and it made me respect and like him even more. Helen |

Subject: RE: Reason to be cheerless -part one From: Brendy Date: 27 Mar 00 - 08:17 PM 'Whip me with yer shovel Mick' was definately a gem of our day. The Bass line in that song is the work of a genius! B. |

Subject: RE: Reason to be cheerless -part one From: Hyperabid Date: 28 Mar 00 - 04:07 AM I believ Ian Dury's son siad yesterday that "he did everything he wanted to in life and died with his dignity intact". I'd think I'd done quite well if that were my obit. Let's raise a glass to Ian. Cheers Hyp |

Subject: RE: Reason to be cheerless -part one From: GUEST,Neil Lowe Date: 28 Mar 00 - 08:32 AM Strange...I was just thinking of these two songs a few days ago, trying to remember who did them, and then I come across this thread. Yes...a unique talent - for the "Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll" contribution alone (wish I had a nickel for every t-shirt and bumper sticker I've seen with that phrase). Ranks right up there alongside rock 'n'roll mantras such as yeah, baby baby, and Country Joe's Give me an 'F'.... Neil

Subject: RE: Reason to be cheerless -part one From: GMT Date: 28 Mar 00 - 09:55 AM I saw him on the TV recently too. He was elloquent and insightfull with a wicked humour, often directed at himself. We should all have such grace. He'll be missed as will his music. Gary |

Subject: RE: Reason to be cheerless -part one From: Wesley S Date: 28 Mar 00 - 10:39 AM Wasn't he also an actor? I seem to remember him having a role in "The Cook , The Thief , His Wife and Her Lover". { I think I have the correct title }. A bizarre movie to be sure. Tasty, but bizarre. |
