I haven't seen a lot about Earth Day, which was yesterday and was wondering how any of you might have spent it. A few students at University of Wyoming led a peaceful protest against IMF; one of the dramas I watch on tv had a lawyer-mom whose daughter's science project on global warming persuaded her to turn in her SUV for an electric car, so the show focussed some on the day; there were a few other slight references throughout my day.

Anyhow, I got to wondering if it was considered passé (sorry if that doesn't turn out right, I forgot the code for diacritical marks) by most folks, if they're all hiding their heads in the sand, so to speak, or what?

Thanks,

kat

I thought Earth Day was April 22. No special plans here; I've been trying to get my house in order fro a year now - literally. (My mother had to move, and I suddenly acquired all of the family artifacts.) I'm not sure I'd be doing anything different, anyway. I was planning on pruning dead branches from trees, etc. anyway. I'd have to stop doing my ecological housecleaning to celebrate, and I'm too practical a tree-hugging dirt worshiper to do that. (Got that phrase off of a bumper sticker; hope I can find one to buy someday). Have a good Earth Day,whatever day it is/was.

Oops! Thanks, HollowFox! That'll teach me to not double check the media! No wonder I hadn't seen/heard much! You are right, it is on the 22nd. So, I guess I get a reprive, because I hadn't done much of anything for it, yesterday, whew!BTW - you may be able to order that bumper sticker from Northern Sun. I haven't looked at their website or new catalogue recently, but usually the catalogue has more in it than the website.

I can relate to the getting your house in order and family artifacts. I've become the family archivist, with loads of photos and papers to go through/preserve/share, plus my own accumulation to go through. Slow process, fun, sad, but it sure feels good each time I get a bit more done.

SO, dear Mudcatters, let me rephrase the question, "What will you be doing,if anything, to celebrate Earth Day this year?"

Thanks,

katlaughingatherself

Burning garbage, cutting down a few redwoods, celebrating with a couple of barbequed spotted owls and maybe some jerked whale meat. That pretty much sums up my earth day.

I'm sending a psychic beating towards you, Amergin. You're supposed to boil whale meat!!!

Actually, I will probably be working, but I have to finish some artwork this weekend for a contest at Summerfair here in Cincinnati. Actually I should say start, rather than finish, although I have to do that too. . .

Peace--Keli

I sang Jeff Lynne's (formerly of ELO) folk tune "Save Me Now"....

One day the earth woke up, said
"Boy I feel half dead
Somebody's turning up the poison
And It's getting in my head
Sometimes I wish my guests
Would move away somewhere
Yes I'm burning up all over
I can't even breathe the air"

Save me now, Save me now, Save me now
Come on and save me now, Save me now
Save me now

One day the earth woke up, said
"Boy it's getting hot
And remember all those trees I had
Well now there ain't a lot
And my ice-cap's slowly trickling
Down to where the party's at
And if everybody's going there well
That's the end of that"

Tom Lewis has a great song dedicated to Earth. Here it is. MESSAGE IN THE BOTTLE

Words & Music by Tom Lewis

I walked along the beach to find a place no foot had trod
Searching for some solitude, perhaps commune with God
Or perhaps commune with nature when I saw to my dismay
A signal flash - a piece of glass, from half the world
away.

There's a message in the bottle that's been washed up by the tide
In language anyone can read, for there's no note inside
The bottle is the message and it's drifted here to say
There are no desert islands now, we've thrown it all away

An oily rainbow glistens on the water and the shore
Seabirds, otters, fish and dolphins soon may be no more
The ocean depths with our debris and sewage we've defiled
Reduce, re-use, recycle!" has the simpletons beguiled

Ignoring tomorrow, we live for today, strutting like kings of all we survey
While profit rules, we stand like fools, between tortured forest and urban decay

Across the years and through my tears, I gaze at that lagoon
And realise we've even left our garbage on the moon
There's toxins in the aquifers and poison in the streams
The end result of this assault, the stillbirth of our dreams

There's a message in the bottle that's been washed up by the tide
In language anyone can read, for there's no note inside
The bottle is the message and it's drifted here to say
There are no desert islands now, we've thrown it all away

Have to admit it, I'm an eternal optimist -- So, I wrote a song:

What The Flowers Had To Say

I took a walk in the garden today
To see what the flowers there had to say
I talked and I walked and I muttered a while
Thinking all I would get was a wink and a smile

Chorus:
The path was long and wide
No place for me to hide
But soon I felt the comfort of
The voices of the earth

The woes of the world were on my mind
War and hunger, you know the kind
But my friends of all colors gave me good advice
Lay down your troubles, stay here where it's nice.

You've done what you can, just stop for an hour.
First it will shine, and then it will shower.
The wind sometimes blows, and we all have to bend
A season lasts so long, then comes to an end

The path was long and wide
No place for me to hide
But soon I felt the comfort of
The voices of the earth

Our seeds they are planted, and sometimes are spilled
We grow where it's wild, and where it is tilled.
It shines and it rains and often it snows,
But the earth will remain and we will still grow

Our time here is short, so enjoy what you can.
It often seems crazy, but there is a plan.
The weeds and the flowers, we all have our place,
So follow the sun, and hold up your face

The path was long and wide
No place for me to hide
But soon I felt the comfort of
The voices of the earth

I took a walk in the garden today
To see what the flowers there had to say
I talked and I walked and I muttered a while
Thinking all I would get was a wink and a smile

I took a walk in the garden today

I''m going to a reconciliation ceremony with the Nez Perce at the Vancouver Barracks tomorrow... my earthencouragement for everyone is to buy a clothesline and hang clothes out to dry...if they can do it yearround in Labrador, you can probably do it where you are...hand it low so you can throw the clothes over it..don't need pins..have kids do it....mg

Earth Day

He sits on the bluff, lounging on the grass, the wetness seeping into his seat, holding the bottle of Southern Comfort, watching as the bottle slowly empties with each raising to his lips, glug glug glug, feeling the warmth sink slowly into the depths of his gut. The birds twitch around, dancing, chirping, jerking back and forth back and forth, catching insects, flying from tree to tree, diving into the pond. The wind runs its fingers through his hair, whispering into his ear, reassuring him with its eternity, swishing through the trees, skipping across the pond. He stumbles to his feet, fumbles the dirt off his clothes, dances a drunken jig down the dirt paths, lurching through spider webs, feeling them tickle his face as they pitter patter across his cheek, brushes them off, and raises his inebriated voice to chant to the trees as he sways down the trail.

Doing my part for the environment on a very local level, I refrained from launching any air biscuits for the entire 24 hour period. Sadly, at 12:01 my previous efforts were negated resulting in another day being spent repainting the wall to cover the scorch marks and peeling paint.

Ah....there IS hope for you, Amergin!**BG**

Aine, that is a KEEPER! Have you put it into the songbook? Do you have a tune for it? Will you send it to Max? I want to learn it! I really love and relate to the imagery, womon; speaks to ma' heart.

MaryG, that sounds like a good place to be tomorrow, good energy, and a very good suggestion. Clothes hung up outside always smell so fresh, too.

Thanks,

kat

If you're really lazy (like moi) but would still like to be a good Earthling, if you go to this site Click here you can save tiny pieces of rainforest. It costs nothing. You just click the button and if you go back often, eventually, the forest acreage you save really adds up. You don't get any spam from doing this (except I think a monthly e-mail) and you can track how much forest you've saved day by day. Plus, they have really great e-cards of all kinds.

Well, tomorrow we are going down to the Mall in Washington D.C. to celebrate the 20th Earth Day. I want to show my kids some of the excitement I had on the first Earth Day in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

If we aren't rained out we hope to see Carly Simon, James Taylor and others. Should be a lot of fun.
