Subject: Catters in Dakotas, MN, NE, IA? From: SDShad Date: 20 Apr 00 - 03:09 PM In the fine style of so many similar threads of late, since I'm relatively new here and haven't come across any other Dakotans (North or South) yet, and one person who's from the Zumbro River Valley in Minnesota where my clan hail from, and no Nebraskans or Iowans that I can think of, I ask: Are there any, or many, 'Catters from the Northern Plains/Upper Midwest/whatever in the "five state area?" Subject: RE: BS: Catters in Dakotas, MN, NE, IA? From: SDShad Date: 20 Apr 00 - 06:06 PM Cool! Sorcha--that's pretty remote! What town you in? Jim--I went to UM (Minneapolis campus) for two years, so I know what you mean. I'm more of a Minneapolis person, but St. Paul is a lovely city, especially the residential areas. Ely--do you by any chance know a cop in Grinnell named Dan Boyer? Or did you--I don't know if he's still there? If you do, I went to grad school with him. Chris |

Subject: RE: BS: Catters in Dakotas, MN, NE, IA? From: Ely Date: 20 Apr 00 - 08:50 PM I try not to get to know the cops that well. The name sounds familiar, but I wouldn't know him personally. Although, my freshman year, I did get stopped by the police twice while walking to a friend's house to play tunes. Very weird. |

Subject: RE: BS: Catters in Dakotas, MN, NE, IA? From: SDShad Date: 21 Apr 00 - 09:25 AM It's painful, rich, I know. How do you think I feel having to admit my mom was born in...gack...Bismarck.... And my grandfather was born near Streeter, which of course no one's ever heard of. Of course, Bismarck and Streeter don't elicit "so, that was, ah, your accomplice in the chipper, then" comments, I suppose.... So were you there at the time of the flood rich? Subject: RE: BS: Catters in Dakotas, MN, NE, IA? From: Stricks Date: 21 Apr 00 - 01:23 PM Mbo--Grinnell is the home of Grinnell College. Ely--I grew up in Grinnell and went to college there...in those days I was known as a 'townie'. I agree that's it's in the middle of nowhere, but I have a lot of good memories from there. Back to the original question--I no longer live in IA and my wife no longer lives in ND, but we continue to make annual pilgrimages back to Grinnell and Mandan!

Subject: RE: BS: Catters in Dakotas, MN, NE, IA? From: Ely Date: 24 Apr 00 - 01:15 AM Stricks-- I'm not complaining. I'm from Houston--it's nice not to have the noise, smog, crime, etc. etc. etc. And I'm used to driving long distances. I don't know why the police stopped me. They asked me all kinds of questions. I got stopped the next week by another set of cops. A couple of weeks after that, I saw a police car and thought, "Oh, no. Here we go again", but it was the guys who stopped me the first time and they just waved. My guess is there had been a robbery or something, or problems with meth. Grinnell also has a pretty good bluegrass/country show twice a year to raise money for the hospice. |
