I just sang this on HearMe tonight. I thought it was in the DT, but it's not, so here it is. The tune is "Roll the Woodpile Down", and I'll take the blame for the words.

THE BOWLING SHANTY

Oh, I've got a cure for grief and pain
ROLL DOWN THE ALLEYWAY
I'll go right down to the bowling lane
AND WE'LL ROLL THE OLD BALL DOWN

BOWLING! BOWLING! BOWLING THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND
THAT BROWN GAL O' MINE ROLLED A 209
AND WE'LL ROLL THE OLD BALL DOWN

Each Wednesday night I'll put on my shoes
I'll take my ball and the Daily News

My Aunt Dinah had quite an arm
She'd bowl every day, it'd do her no harm

I bowl with a man named Curly Brown
He bowls with a ball weighs 25 pounds

When Curly he lets fly with that ball
He'll knock a hole in the backstop wall

Old Curly'll knock them pins to bits
But he's still left with a 7-10 split

I'm rolling strikes and I'm feeling fine
One more frame and it's Miller Time

Aloha,
Mark^^

Sounds like "Roll The Old Chariot Along"

That's another fine song, Dave, but a different tune.

Apparently, this fine parody hasn't been harvested yet. At least I can't find it. I'd like to personally thank Mark for his contribution to martime traditional singing. My current version has undergone some folk processing. It's not necessarily better but, like a lot of people, I find it hard to keep my hands off a good song!

THE BOWLING SHANTY
(Words by Mark Cohen © As sung by Bob Walser at Mystic Sea Port in 1992 with some changes by Charlie Ipcar Tune: Roll The Woodpile Down)

Well, I know a cure for grief and pain,
'Way down the al-ley way,
Let's go down to the bowl-ing lanes
And we'll roll the old ball down!

Chorus:

Bowl-ing, bowl-ing!
We're bowl-ing the whole year 'round!
That brown gal of mine bowled a two-o-nine –
And we'll roll the old ball down!

When I was young and in me prime...
I'd blow them pins down ten at a time...

I once knew a guy called Curley Brown...
He'd bowl a ball weighed seven hundred pounds...

When Curley let flew with that ball...
He'd blow a big hole in the backstop wall...

He'd blow them pins into little bits...
And still be left with a seven/ten split...

It's one more frame and that'll do...
And it's "Miller Time" when we're all through...

^^

A PM to Joe would let you know wether or not he has harvested.
^^ [grin - JRO]
