That is from a Mary Chapin Carpenter song, NEVER HAD IT SO GOOD, from her State of the Heart album~~1989.

Thanks so much! No wonder it haunts me... I own the disk. But I also saw on a bluegrass list that it's on a James King disk. (Must be something in the air) I haven't hunted up the song yet, but I'm thinking it's a different song.
