Subject: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: Mbo Date: 05 Jul 00 - 10:10 AM Hey folks! Very soon I may be starting out on a mini Mudcat Adventure of my own! A few things must be sorted out first before it is finalized, but here is the gist: Praise & Hardi have envited me to come visit them in northern Pennsylvania. In relation to their schedule, I would probably leave on Monday, July 31st and head up to their place. While I'm up and around there, I'm planning on excursions to see Ceit in Brockville, Ontario, and Mario & Irish Sergeant as well. I most definately be back at my place in Greenville, NC on August 12th, to get ready for the Fall 2000 semester at ECU which starts on the 16th. If there are any other Mudcatters not too far away from that area, I'd love to drive to meet them, or have us meet in a central location. Since the Nothern Pennsylvania/Ontario/New York/New England area is all "not to far" in my book, anyone who's interested be sure to "get up with me" (as they say in Eastern NC) so we could plan something! Now, if the good Lord's willin', and the creeks don't rise, the trip should be a definate thing soon, and then we'll be having some major Mudcat fun! --Mbo |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: MMario Date: 05 Jul 00 - 10:20 AM Great gallopin' Ghosties and Ghoulies! This is the same lad who had to be badgered into driving 90 miles in March? And he now considers NE Pa, Ontario, New England to be "not too far"? Where's Brockville? (okay, I know, Ontario ...duh ...)(Never mind, I will be not lazy and look it up) I do not know if anyone would be interested, but I *AM* working at Sterling Renaissance Festival the weekend in the middle there.....and there are over 80 shows free with your entrence fee... And Mbo - senior Wench at our Faire does not allow walks... so you are safe. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: Willie-O Date: 05 Jul 00 - 10:27 AM Brockville's in eastern Ontario between Kingston and Cornwall. I think I'll be playing the Yellow Canoe in Merrickville (not far from Brockville and I've been badgering Ceit to come by) Fri Aug 4. That's Blue Skies Festival weekend, Mbo, I'll post more info on it shortly--a wonderful backwoods festival near my home. Day passes will be available at the gate. I was thinkin of having a gettogether maybe on the Monday after Blue Skies. Schedule permitting. Lets look into it. Willie-O |

Either myself or midchuck would be happy to host you in the Rutland area. We can drink mass quantities of lager and sing into the wee hours. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: Big Mick Date: 05 Jul 00 - 09:28 PM Oh, ......sure........ya little gob o' horseshite......you call that "not too far" but make no time for a short jot to Michigan to visit poor aul ailin' Uncle Mick..hell, it's just around the corner...First, THE FAIR ONE plans a trip to Anaheim and doesn't do a quick commute to Michigan in order that we might properly sanctify our relationship at the Temple of the Sacred Fertility Rites, and now you don't even bother to put yourself in the least little bit.......HHHHMMMMPPPPPHHHHHH.....I don't want you to worry, but you know that I haven't been well lately (How's that Gran? Did I get the guilt piece right?)....Did you know that Michigan is called the Wolverine State? Know what you get when you cross a Wolverine and a Groundhog? Six more weeks of some really shitty basketball. (Sorry to those of you who are not fans of US collegiate sports)...........you are out of the f***in' will Big Mick |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: Susan A-R Date: 05 Jul 00 - 10:11 PM Here Here! for the Champlain Festival. It'll be one more reason for me to actually get there this year, in spite of such obstacles as family, catering jobs, lack of transport and other such knee high deterrents which always seem to add up. Just say the word and I'll be there (at least on Saturday) I'll certainly look for all of the Chucks there too. If you come through later, I can provide you with a healthy (and, more importantly, tasty) alternative to MacDonalds. Mudcatters eat free at the Kitchen. Just let me KNOW, unlike the last road trip band that went through here!!!!) There's also a nice futon in a room with a door that shuts here in Montpelier. Susan A-R |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: catspaw49 Date: 05 Jul 00 - 10:49 PM Well, this is all shaping up on the Mudcat part and it certainly will be an adventure for him, but when do we get to the part over what Meebo does with his "Mini." First, I think that's a silly name for it as I call mine "Joe Smackers," but to each his own and perhaps Meebo feels "Mini" is an accurate description or something. Anyway, where's the part about what he's planning for Mini. Up to this point, we haven't heard of much usage or even attempts at usage, so I want to know what the adventure for his Mini is going to be. Maybe a drop by at Mick's for a dose of the Fertility Rites might be in order. Then on to ...hhmmmmm...... Spaw |

Yes, the Fair One will indeed be passing through within your range and is looking for some company. I assume that you will be more than willing, of course, to act as a representative of the firm and show her a fine time.....or at least the finer points of laying about. Maybe you could run her up to your place and show her how adept you are with a big hose. Spaw (standing aside, out of range) |

Actually, I used to be a respected rep and manager for a Fortune 500......Wore 3 piece suits, short hair, wing tips, and everything, doing presentations to GM, Ford, Goodyear, and the like. Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: wysiwyg Date: 06 Jul 00 - 04:01 PM Now here is a concept. Catspaw. As stunt double for Hardiman. Really, think about it. It's the wing tips. I cannot get Hardiman to try wing tips. Yup. Spaw calls up Mbo's folks as Hardiman after I call and screw it up. Saying I was an imposter and he is the real deal. OK? It can be Hardi on a day off so you don't even have to consider a clergy collar. Yup. He is off on Fridays. Perfect. ~S~ |

But your planning and all on this thread did at least one great thing-it got the "Battle of the Double Entendres" into high gear. And I give you as many points as spaw and the others! Your line about "We'll just have to give it a shot" tore me up!!!!! Perhaps try for something shorter, with a tighter itinerary-less chance of something unpredictable happening. Maybe try for the Get-away in October? Hope you get to try your wings-and things-out soon! Luvya, Marymac |

Meanwhile, maybe you could get as far as Hillsboro and join Dani and the people she hangs with from time to time. There are some good pickers and players around there and it isn't all that far away. Drop her a note. Maybe something could be worked out. It isn't hopeless, Mbo. I played alone for lots of years. It helped me keep what little of my sanity I had. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: wysiwyg Date: 09 Jul 00 - 06:16 PM Mbo..... I do understand. It was like that when we landed here, which is one reason we would have enjoyed your visit SO much. But there ARE folkies around your area, they just are HIDING. I promise. And I know some ways to find them. So call me up one night this week and after you are all done venting the upset (which I will receive in full), we'll start brainstorming how to get you connected to some people. It was a good impulse, you know, wanting that, and is still worth making happen.... Just... when the Energizer Bunny runs into a wall, it can actually spin off in another direction! OK? We'll getcha goin'. I promise. ~Susan PS, let's declare this now the FIND LOST FOLKIES thread. Come on, Mudcatters-- how would YOU get them out of the closet and into Mbo's circle?

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: p.j. Date: 09 Jul 00 - 06:21 PM Mbo, you're in good company. Tons of us have played the music we loved when everybody around us was into something else. It sucks, and I'm sorry it's happening to you. But you're loved here, and your music is understood and supported. That's worth a whole town full of coffeshops, festivals and clubs. We'll figure out a way to get together eventually. Meantime stay close, buddy. Keep playing and keep posting. And get a job, willya? One of us 'Catters has to be gainfully employed! :o) Yours, PJ |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Jul 00 - 06:24 PM Try to relax there my friend. We do understand as most of us have been there too. For what I really enjoy, this place ain't exactly a hotbed of activity either. And I was young once.....believe it or not and I'm older than your parents now so I see the "sides" of the issue. Now its never stopped me before, so let's look at what you can do. I think you need a plan. Are your parents suggesting a parttime job or do they mean something full time after you finish school? If its the latter, that's one thing, but a parttime job shouldn't be too hard to come by. Damn near all of us who went to college worked at the same time....not a big deal, and pretty good experience too. And then asked to plan for a specific event....the FSGW in DC comes to mind. An October weekend, close to Philly, another plus. You could lay out a plan for school, the trip, the drive. Maybe you could ride partway by meeting Allan who you already know and go with him. The possibilities are numerous and out there and we'll all help in one way or another. Almost all parents are suckers for structure and a good plan, well thought out, with the specifics handled.....such as potentially missed school or whatever. If you are completely prepared with specifics and the money to pull it off, you have a lot better chance of making the sale. And there are other things a bit closer. I know of several events over in the Smokies where you might see a few 'Catters too. I dunno'.......but let's think on it huh? Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: Sorcha Date: 09 Jul 00 - 06:27 PM If you do, you'll have to dye your hair green or purple or something. Kate would love it, but your parents probably wouldn't. Keep your dream, and save your money. It will happen someday. Promise. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: p.j. Date: 09 Jul 00 - 06:44 PM Wait a minute, this punk band idea has promise, Meebs. If you lead us, we'll follow. Several of us could begin practicing in our little corner of the world, and when we all get together we can make our first recording. A bunch of folkies turned punk. It's got possibilities...I can see 'Spaw with blue spiked hair, using the bones of a corporate executive for dulcimer hammers....Tony Burns would look *outstanding* in leather studs and a tongue piercing....Mick could wear a dog collar and paint his guitar blue and, no, wait, don't touch the guitar....I'll write something really offensive on a bunch of bodhrans (I know, it's redundant) and we can smash 'em over people's heads during the performance! Whaddya think? Now all we need is a name. Birkenstock Toe Jam? Troubadors In Chains? Capo Switchblade? Flatpick Maggots? Who's in? PJ |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: Mbo Date: 09 Jul 00 - 06:56 PM Um, you guys perceptions of punk rock is as flawed as R&R fans perception of folk is. No one dies their hair in punk bands anymore. The look of the Sex Pistols are out. The look of Blink 182 and Green Day, and Goldfinger is in. No leather, no chains, no safety pins, spiked collars, spiked hair, dyed hair, etc. in these modern times. Just everyday guys with regular clothes, regular hair (but tattoos are still in) making good music. Get educated. --Mbo |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: Big Mick Date: 09 Jul 00 - 08:12 PM First off, young man, you wanta take some of that bass outcher voice. I will rip off your lips and you will never get a date......................LOL. Mbo, my young charge, let me tell you. I can relate. You know that I was raised in a VERY ethnic Irish family. I have always loved the traditions/music/customs since boyhood days in the 50's. You also know that it has been pretty hip to be Irish for the last few years. But it wasn't always so. I can remember St. Patrick's Days over the years when the parade consisted of 15 of us carrying a tricolor down Monroe Ave. in Grand Rapids, MI which is the second largest city in the state. And playing Irish Trad in those days meant finding the couple of other people in a coffee house that really knew the music. There were a lot of so called folkies who thought that meant playing Innagaddadavida on an acoustic guitar. It was real difficult to stick with the genre cause there just wasn't much in the way of resources, at least not as compared to now. I would travel a great deal in those times and would always carry the old Guild with me and play it in my room. If I was in a town for a long period of time, I would go to the lounge in my hotel and sit in a corner and play. Some folks would listen, most just pass by. I remember when I was staying in a hotel in Denver. I was on an assignment there which required that I work alone. It is tough to be in a town for an extended period of time (several months in this case), away from family and friends. The nights are tough. I would sit in my room and play ballads, jigs, reels, drinking songs. I would play my 12 string, bodhran, and whistles. One night I heard a pounding on the door, and a muffled voice hollered, "caint you play any fucking Willie Nelson??????". I started playing "Pancho and Lefty" and the same muffled voice hollered, "Thanks, Motherf$%#er". But those times were the best for me. They allowed me to find a voice and a style. It became my voice, and my style, because the outside influences were memories, but the interpretations were mine. They were born of loneliness, and nothing else to do. I learned to take good songs and give them meaning. Make the best of these times. Perfect craft, work on technique, and find your voice. You will know that you are getting there when you cease to copy and instead create. You have talent. Many here have seen it. It is raw, but it is there. All the best, Big Mick |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: SINSULL Date: 09 Jul 00 - 08:42 PM Mbo, I am sorry you're trip is on hold. Being a parent myself I can see where your parents are coming from. This summer my niece (starting her third year at Mt. Holyoke and an Art student) came down to live with me. She was able to get a paid internship at the Brooklyn Museum for the summer at the last minute. Think about it for next summer. Free room and board. Excellent references. And my niece is awfully pretty - blond hair, blue syes, straight A student. Or maybe you can make a short trip over the winter break. Now where exactly are you in N. Carolina? Let's see if we can find you some like-minded playmates. If you promise not to join a punk rock band (didn't I read that they have all moved on from tattoos to branding?), I'll even buy a Yardbird's CD. Smile Love, your life is just beginning. You have so many wonderful times ahead of you. SINSULL |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: Ebbie Date: 09 Jul 00 - 10:06 PM Not too many miles from here by marine highway is a small town (approx. 600 people). A musician friend who recently moved there says there are no people to play music with. Then we concluded that if there are 600 people, at least 30 people there make some kind of music; of those 30, at least 10 would like to find someone else to play with. And, he said, he's going to find those 10 people. Ebbie |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Jul 00 - 10:57 PM Well, let's just forget it for now folks til the boy's over his snit. Matthew, try not to alienate Mick and Peej and Allan and folks who really do care about you by acting like a jackass. Everyone's just trying to help and make you feel a bit better. Hairstyles aren't too important. Peej was making a joke obviously. Now if you want to cool down a bit, it'd be a great idea before you send these fine folks off to talk to someone who can SEE they care. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: p.j. Date: 09 Jul 00 - 11:49 PM I'm sorry, Mbo, the last thing I meant to do was hurt your feelings or make you feel defensive. Just the opposite, in fact-- when you said "..maybe I should join a punk band" I thought you were making a joke about not having anybody to play folk music with, and I was (in a really stupid way) trying to say we're all in this together with you. You're right, I am, tragically unhip about current trends in punk music. (I went to the sites you posted and now I know a little more.) If it's honestly a kind of music you like, tell me more about it and I'll pay attention. In any case, the point's still the same-- you're part of the gang here, and in my middle-aged, misguided, gweebly sort of way, I want you to know you have my support and sympathy for your situation. Okay? Yours, Pam

But like the Beatles say "Boy, you're gonna carry that weight, carry that weight for a long time..." and thought everyone's being very kind and supportive, end the end it's me who has to get throught college and whatever else stands in my way, so I can finally meet the folks who've been so nice to me. One day... --Mbo

Subject: RE: BS: Mbo's Mini Mudcat Adventure From: bbelle Date: 10 Jul 00 - 12:30 AM Now, Mbo ... Mama Jenny (that's what I called my great-grandmother) talking here ... Even though it's been a hundred years since I was your age, I well remember what it was like. I was 21 y/o and had a midnight curfew! I was the ONLY one in my group that had a midnight curfew! Mother said it was because I had two younger sisters and must set an example. Can you imagine the look I gave her? She should have withered up like the Wicked Witch of the West. But she didn't and I could fill a book with her euphemisms. I swore I would never say those things to my child. I don't have children ... but, guess what ... I have nieces and nephews and I say to them the same things Mother said to me. Sometimes I laugh and say "Omig-d, I'm turning into my mother." The moral of this story is ... even though you are extremely unhappy with your parents' decision ... when the time comes for you to make that decision for your child ... you will probably do the same. You are not a loser and getting a job ain't such a bad thing. It sure can go a long way, though, in getting you some freedom. Remember that everything happens for a reason and right now you should look forward to your future mudcat adventure. Mama Jenny |
