Be kind to your apprentice?

I heard a song sung around a campfire years ago (at Kentwell Hall, if any Kentwellians frequent here)in which a man is lamenting the unkindness that he had shown an apprentice. I believe the apprentice died. I loved the song, and would appreciate knowing the words.
