Howdy Folks,

I'm looking for the old gospel tune with "And the rock cried out, no hiding place, there's no hiding place down here" or something like that.

I've tried a couple of searches (and can't believe that it's not in any of my sources here. Where can I find it? Thanks for your help.

Allinkausay,
Bill

Definitely sounds like Carter Family material to me, but I can't find it either. Maybe this will at least point you in the right direction. ARC/Columbia material, maybe?

I know the song has been recorded by the Johnson Mountain Boys. I believe they record on the Rounder Label. I also believe it was originally recorded by Flatt and Scruggs. Shouldn't be a problem to find the words.

I know the song has been recorded by the Johnson Mountain Boys. I heard it played the other day on the Bluegrass Show on WAMU in Wash, DC. I believe they record on the Rounder Label. I also believe it was originally recorded by Flatt and Scruggs. Shouldn't be a problem to find the words.

NO HIDING PLACE
As recorded by The Nashville Bluegrass Band
Words and music by Gladys Stacy and Louise Cirtain

Sister Mary she wears a golden chain (2x)
Sister Mary wears a golden chain
Oh! let me leave you Jesus' name
There's no hiding place down here.

CHORUS: Lawd! There's no hiding place down here
There's no hiding place down here
Well, I went to the rock to hide my face
The rock cried out; No hiding place
There's no hiding place down here.

Now the devil he wears a hypocrite shoe (2x)
The devil wears a hypocrite shoe
If you don't watch out he'll put it on you
There's no hiding place down here. CHORUS

I'll pitch my tent on the old campground (3x)
Give old Satan one more round
There's no hiding place down here. CHORUS

ALT. VERSE. I'll pitch my tent on the old campground (3x)
And people say the Lord will walk around
There's no hiding place down here. CHORUS

Another verse we used to sing:

Now I believe without a doubt (3X)
A Christian has the right to shout:
There's no hiding place...etc.

I particularly like the Carter Family's original recording of this one, including the "Carter Family elastic measure (R)" (i.e., some beats DON'T come WHERE you think THEY'RE gonna, and pauses at the ends of lines are notaslongasyouthink), Maybell's great guitar solo, and their wonderful mondagreen in the first verse:

Sister Mary wears a golden chain,
There's every link in Jesus' name.

Great song!

Howdy All,

Thanks a lot! My singing partner will be thrilled that we have such great options as we add this to our repertoire (she was the one who said it had been on her mind since we performed at Dulci-More Festival 3 on Memorial Day).

I just did some browser changes, so I got through on your post right away, Wolfgang. I looked at that before I posted the request, and I wasn't able to get through that day.

Gene, Whippoorwill, & Bob, it will be great to have so many verses to choose from. The first response I got was on e-mail when I signed on -- from oldtimer. I figured this would be familiar to several of you.

Thanks again to all. Now let's get over to the song circle and sing this.

Allinkausay,
Bill

It's hard to believe there's a Babylon 5 connection to this song (take a look at the link in Wolfgang's post). Good sleuth work, Wolfgang!
