Subject: camel races in Nevada From: GUEST,Auxiris Date: 23 Jul 00 - 11:33 AM Hello, everyone. Does anyone know about camel races that are apparently held somewhere in Nevada? Just to connect this thread to music, if anyone does indeed have information about this mythical (?) event, are there any songs about it? Thanks! cheers, |

Subject: RE: BS: camel races in Nevada From: Sourdough Date: 23 Jul 00 - 08:48 PM The camel races are held annualy in Virginia City, the place where Brett Harte and Mark Twain were reporters for The Territorial Enterprise. As you drive in from once side, you pass the spot where young Twain (actually, he was still Clemens) was held up by a highwayman. Someplace in Arizona, I remember coming upon a town square that had a monument to the Camel Corps. In Benicia (named after the wife of General Vallejo and for a short time the capitol of California) there are the Camel Stables which are open for tour. About the lyrinc posted above, I think that Jolly, or more likely a corruption of something like Hadj Ali was, was the head of the camel drivers - perhaps it was a famous camel though. Memory fails. Anyway, as anyone who has been interested in this topic probably knows by now, when the US gave up the idea of using camels, they sent the drivers home to N. Africa and the camels were turned loose. I guess it's lucky they didn't thrive the way the wild donkeys belonging to the moners and the prospectors did. I've almost run down several of those in the Death Valley region. On the other hand, there was the time I came around a corner too fast on a motorcycle in Turkey and scattered a pack caravan of camels carrying pottery. Glad that can't happen here, can it? If you hit a camel when you go too fast round a corner you're more likely to get injured than if you hit a pedestrian. We clearly need more camels on the roads, as traffic calming measures...
Check the links about the Camel Corps from me and Sorcha to find out about Hadji. Apparently the reason given for not bringing in more camels to the USA is that they frightened the mules. Which suggests that American mules must scare a lot easier than mules in the Middle East, who don't give a damn about camels. Or anything else.
And here is a website about what some Australian camels are getting up to these days. |
