Subject: Please Post Tunes Here
From: Joe Offer
Date: 25 Jul 00 - 02:34 PM

Note: We reserve the right to edit or delete messages in this thread, and we may delete tunes once they are available in the Digital Tradition.
There's an effort about to collect tunes for all the Digital Tradition songs. The missing tunes thread (click) has information about tunes that are needed, and about tunes that have been posted in other locations. The Mudcat Cafe has over 23,000 threads posted so far, so we have to take some care to ensure that we don't lose tunes and lyrics that are posted.
  • If you'd like to submit tunes in ABC or MIDITEXT format, please post them in this thread or, preferably, in the thread where the lyrics appear (and post a message here, telling us where the lyrics and tune are). Make sure you put the name of the song in the Subject title of your message in this thread.
  • If you'd like to submit tunes in MIDI format, please send them as e-mail attachments to Alan of Australia at Mudcat MIDIs (click to mail)
  • ***NEW:If you'd like to submit tunes in Noteworthy Composer format, please send them as e-mail attachments to me (Joe Offer) at this link (click to mail). I'll submit the Noteworthy file to the Digital Tradition, and also make sure a MIDI of the file is posted at Mudcat MIDIs. Dick Greenhaus says Noteworthy files are easier for him to work with when he's preparing the Digital Tradition, especially if you have the lyrics set up to match the notes of the tune.
  • If you'd like to send tunes in any other format, please e-mail them to Dick Greenhaus - digitrad@world.std.com. To send lyrics and tunes on that archaic substance known as "paper," click here for information on how to contact the Digital Tradition by mail.
If you e-mail or post tunes, please be sure to tell us where we can find the lyrics (if it's not in the thread where the lyrics appear, give us the DigiTrad filename at the bottom of the lyrics, or the URL of the thread where the lyrics are posted).

I hope that clears up what we need. I'm sure Dick Greenhaus will drop in from time to time to give us further instructions. If you post your tunes here in this thread or send them to Mudcat MIDIs or to Dick, it will make it much easier for us to make use of them. Thanks.

I've also found a few more with tunes already in DT:-

Boys of Wexford (2) [BOYSWEX2 and Boys of Wexford (3) [BOYSWEX3 have the same tune as Boys of Wexford [BOYSWEXF.

Foggy Dew (6) [FOGGDEW6 uses the tune [DEWFOG which is already given for three similar (Irish) Foggy Dews.

The Girl I Left Behind Me [GIRLLF12 uses the tunefile [BRGHTON, which is used for many of the other DT versions

There are hundred(s)of tunes missing from the DT which have been published in the regular Sing Out publication, as opposed to the Collected Reprints. I haven't been able to find any library in Australia which houses even part of the collection. If you can locate one in your area let me know. If I can still find it I did clean up the complete indexes from the Sing Out site to create a more searchable database of published songs/tunes over the past 50 years. Regards, John

Sorcha,

You have to be careful with ABc's < symbol - HTML thinks it's the start of a tag and you lose what comes after. Substitute < (short for less "than" followed by a semi-colon ; with no spaces. Here's your tune again with (hopfully) the last three notes visible

Hey, you guys are really going to town. Including the DT filename like you do should help a lot. Exact format is
filename[ FIRSHIP
-but what you've given is surely enough to let Dick know how to find it. Sorcha, I don't think you need to include all that search criteria stuff as long as you include the DT filename, and the song title or titles that you have for the tune.

No less than nine Scottish versions are given as a single entry. This tune goes with the number 4 (Berwickshire) version, but will fit several others. I learned a slightly different version as a child from my mother, who was born on Tyneside in 1921, but her parents were of Scottish stock.

We are three Jews, we come from Spain,
To court upon your daughter Jane.

Our daughter Jane is far too young
To understand your noisy tongue.

SPOKEN:
Go away, Corkscrew.

Our name, our name is not Corkscrew,
We'll stamp our foot, and away we'll go.

Come back, come back, your coat is green,
And choose the fairest one you see.

The fairest one that I can see
Is [name here]. Come out to me.

SPOKEN:
I will not come.

The naughty girl, she won't come out,
She won't come out, she won't come out;
The naughty girl, she won't come out,
To join us in the dancing.

SPOKEN:
I will come.

Now we've got the lady out,
The lady out, the lady out,
Now we've got the lady out,
To join us in the dancing.

O SACRED HEAD SORE WOUNDED
(O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden by P Gerhardt, 1607-76)
based on Salve caput cruentatum (probably by Arnulf von Loewen, 1200-50)
English paraphrase by Y.H.

O Sacred head, sore wounded, defiled and put to scorn;
O kingly head, surrounded with mocking crown of thorn:
What sorrow mars thy grandeur? Can death thy bloom deflower?
O countenance whose splendour the hosts of heaven adore!

Thy beauty, long desirèd, hath vanished from our sight;
Thy power is all expirèd, and quenched the light of light.
Ah me! for whom thou diest, hide not so far thy grace:
Show me, O Love most highest, the brightness of thy face.

I pray thee, Jesus, own me, me, Shepherd good, for thine;
Who to thy fold has won me, and fed with truth divine.
Me guilty, me refuse not, incline thy face to me,
This comfort that I lose not, on earth to comfort thee.

In thy most bitter passion my heart to share doth cry,
With thee for my salvation upon the cross to die.
Ah, keep my heart thus movèd, to stand thy cross beneath,
To mourn thee, well-belovèd, yet thank thee for thy death.

My days are few, O fail not, with thine immortal power,
To hold me that I quail not in death's most fearful hour:
That I might fight befriended, and see in my last strife
To me thine arms extended upon the cross of life.

I've been exploring Bruce Olson's Scarce Songs site and some associated abc files, and have had some success in finding his abc's of songs he has submitted. (Quotes from Bruce's site are in italics)

27 AILEEN A ROON 7 - [EILAROO7
28 AILEEN AROON - [EILAROO2
29 AILEEN AROON 3 - [EILAROO3
30 AILEEN AROON 4 - [EILAROO4
991 EILEEN AROON 5 - [EILAROO5
992 EILEEN AROON 6 - [EILAROO6

All six of these were submitted to DT by Bruce. Both these tunes on his website would fit all six of these, but the second would need to be severely "de-ornamented" first.

708 COMMODORE GALE
A singable set of the tune is "Granuwail" is in B. Cooke's Cooke's Selection of Twenty One Favourite Original Irish Airs, c 1795, copied in Hime's 'New Selection', c 1805. The tune is Dorian mode. Bunting's setting has a key signature of two flats (G minor), but he then puts a natural sign in front of all of the E's. The second copy of the tune here is an instrumental version, not suitable for singing, but it seems to be the earliest copy of the tune. I have removed the repeats in tune 2 (now AB not AABB) and think removing most of the "ornaments" would make it singable.

Back in the early 60s my brother was member #41 in the Springfields fan club. As we only had 3 or 4 albums each then, I heard a lot of Dusty. I've done these from my memory of those times, but I haven't heard these sung in over 30 years, so the tunes may not be exactly as she sang them. Any corrections welcome.

This is the tune commonly sung to the English version of this nursery rhyme. The verses are not significantly different, but the chorus goes:

Here we go Looby-loo,
Here we go Looby-light,
Here we go Looby-loo,
All on a Saturday night.

1697 I'LL TAKE THE LEGS (From Some Old Table)
DT says Tune: Washington and Lee Swing - is this it? I remember this tune from the early 50's when Max Bygraves used to sing it to Archie Andrews. Only in Britain could a ventriloquist's not only have his own radio show, but top the ratings! Bygraves' song went:
I'll take the legs from some old table,
I'll take the arms from some old chair,
I'll take the neck from some old bottle,
And from a horse I'll take the hair.
I'll take the hands and face from off the clock,
And, Archie, when I'm through
You'll have a lovely little baby dummy,
And he'll be a friend to you.

2848 THE PUB WITH NO BEER
Virtually identical to the DT version. The Dubliners sing the chorus only as a first and last verse, and omit DT's verse 4. Only major differences are:
Verse 2, line 4 The barman says sadly (not "suddenly")
Verse 5, line 1 Oh Billy the blacksmith (not "pity the blacksmith")

On 4th August Sorcha posted an ABC for "The Fox Went Out", labelled file [FOXOUT5. This tune was a variant of the 'normal' tune in the DT under "the Fox" [FOXOUT. I have never heard the tune which the Copper Family used for this song, but I have found a similar (but shorter) text by The Young Tradition on So Cheerfully Round. This has a completely different tune, suitable for 'a capella' harmonising.

There are a few other no-tune songs on So Cheerfully Round that I hope to transcribe shortly - Watercress-O; Reynard The Fox (3) (on the LP as "The Foxhunt"); The Hungry Child; and Whitsun Carol. Also another version and tune of The Dragoon And the Lady

DADDY FOX

Daddy Fox, he went out one chilly night,
He prayed to the moon for to give him light;
For he'd many, many miles to go that night,
Before he came to his den-o.
Den-o, den-o,
For he'd many, many miles to go that night,
Before he came to his den-o.

So he grabbed the grey goose by the neck,
And he throwed a duck all across his back.
And he heeded not their quilly quilly quack,
Nor the legs all a-dangling down-o.
Down-o etc.

Then old mother Twiddle Twaddle jumped out of bed
And out of the window she stuck her little head;
Cryin', "Oh John, Oh! Now the gray goose is dead
And the fox is away to his den-o!"
Den-o etc.

So John, then he rode to the top of the hill
He blowed his little horn both loud and shrill.
"Play on!" said Reynard, "with your music still,
While I trot away to my den-o"
Den-o etc.

Then old Daddy Fox and his cubs and his wife,
They cut up the goose without any knife.
Saying, "I never ever had such a supper in my life!
And the cubs, they can pick on the bones-o!"
Bones-o etc.

1891 JOHNSON'S MOTOR GAR
The text in the Dubliners Songbook is almost identical to that in the DT, but adds a final verse:

Now when the specials heard the news, they soon put on their shoes.
"They've stolen Johnson's motor car and there is no time to lose."
They searched around the valleys, they searched both near and far,
But the IRA were far away in Johnson's motor car.

2330 MIGHTY DAY
This version in the Campfire Songbook has a different first verse and a slightly different chorus compared to the version in the DT. It then concludes with DT verses 2, 6, 3 and 5.
I remember one September,
Storm winds swept the town;
Women and children were dyin'. God!
Death was all around.
cho:
Wasn't it a mighty day,
Wasn't it a mighty day,
Wasn't it a mighty day,
Great God, that morning
When the storm winds swept the town!

The DT tune to Black Fox is very different to Graham Pratt's original which is wonderfully modal and in my opinion fits the lyrics much better. I've loved this song since I first heard Graham and Eileen sing it about 30 years ago.

Here is the MIDI:

It had been a long time since I'd used it - and I still ended up editing the .son file to get the synchronising exactly right by adding a few underscores between notes.
