Hi, oh all-knowing musical 'Cats,

My sister has been learning the clarinet for quite a while and I want to buy her some Klezmer CD's but I would like to know who you would recommend.

I am also interested in something I heard, that clarinet players like Benny Goodman often used Klezmer music for their tunes, and after listening to a CD of his I can definitely hear some significant resemblance. I also didn't realise that one of my all-time favourite old tunes is an old Jewish tune: Anniversary Song (Oh, how we danced, on the night we were wed). And the recent thread on Dona, Dona (On a wagon, bound for market...) was a revelation to me because I never realised that this was a Jewish song too.

So, I'm happy for this thread to develop in any productive ways into a broad discussion of Klezmer music, Jewish music, Jewish influences on popular music, etc etc.

Bedazzle me with your scintillatingly brilliant insights and discussions and I'll be a very happy woman *BG*

'Don Byron Plays The Music of Mickey Katz'... A bunch of excellent musicians and cabaretists gathering on some old(?!) style songs.

Sydney Monsieur Camembert are a good band(they play in Darlinghurst every Wed night)(as I think you're from NSW),but a bit predictable.

Helen. Dona Dona is not Kletzmer per se. Hebrew music doesn't tend to be.

The best Kletzmer I ever heard is done on a trumpet rather than a clarinet. It is a Benny Goodman recording of "And the Angels Sing". Martha Tilton (a shiksa if I ever heard one!) sings it in the swing fashion of the time. Suddenly the drums pick up and Ziggy Elman goes to work on the trumpet! Wow!.

Murray, that's fascinating info on "And The Angels Sing." I listen to it on my Goodman LP with renewed interest and can definitely hear it now as a Jewish melody.

Hi,Helen - an album I play over and over again is Live! - The Thirteenth Anniversary Album," by the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Lead singer Judy Bressler has a great voice and a good sense of humor. All of the group's recordings are good, but this one is beyond extraordinary.

And there is even a video "Learn to Play Kletzmer Music" taught by Andy Statman and produced by Homespun Tapes (I think Statman is a clarinetist. He has a guest accordianist on the tape.

This is a fabulous CD. It is fairly recent and it's easily found on the web. I just can't say enough good about it.

I went to school at Music and Art with Dave Krackaur - good years, Bella Fleck was there as well, both great nice fellows. So, ANYTHING with Dave on it you will like.

Anything by the Klezmatics! Saw them in town...incredible! Also, "The Fiddlers House" which is Itzahk Perlman playing with assorted Klezmer musicians (including the Klezmatics)

Hello, I think you ought to look at these CD´s Giora Feidman "Klassic Klezmer" Giora Feidman "Viva El Klezmer Kol Simcha "Traditional Jewish Music" Giora Feidman´s Clarinet playing is like that: I never liked clarinet much, now I love it the way he "sings" it. Sorry I've been absent for a couple of days - my 'puter has been having a few transplants but it is getting back to it's normal self again now. I've been pacing the floor, totally unable to focus on anything else. I've discovered that my computer is an extension of my brain and I can't function very well without it. Also, when I did try to connect to Mudcat a day or two ago I couldn't get in. Major withdrawals.

It sounds horrible,this computer splatter experience!!!! I f you're around Sydney,go to see Monsieur Camembert at Labar,on Oxfor Street,Darlinghurst,tomorrow night.They have no clarinet player though.
